April is Sonoma County Wine Month: Get Ready to Uncork Great Times!
Springtime in Sonoma County
Sonoma County’s wineries are swinging their doors wide open this spring to invite wine lovers and wine explorers to plan the perfect Wine Country getaway featuring new and innovative experiences. Few winegrowing regions in America offer more geographical and stylistic diversity than Sonoma County. Stretching from the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean to mountains and valleys blanketed in microclimates, each distinctive zone is linked by its local character and rich agricultural legacy. Sonoma County’s winemakers encapsulate this cultural, agricultural and natural mosaic, a tapestry composed of outdoor adventures, culinary exploration and the celebration of a phenomenal glass of wine. Find an online listing of Wine Month activities, curated by Sonoma County Vintners, on their dedicated web page.
With more than 400 wineries producing wines from 60+ grape varieties in 18 designated American Viticultural Areas, there is sure to be something for every palate. True to the diversity of the many terroirs, visitors swoon over the cornucopia of choices that includes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah – as well as other limited-production gems. Vegan travelers will find numerous options for wine tasting and even food and wine pairings. Any oenophile would be hard-pressed (pun intended!) to find this variety from any other area in the world.

Settling upon a terrace overlooking stunning hillside vistas for a tasting flight after a vineyard tour is a well-deserved indulgence. Like the hiking trails, boutiques and countless other activities available throughout Sonoma County, no two wine tastings in the region are exactly the same. Visitors might settle into a wine cave or a cool subterranean barrel room to enjoy a tasting flight or may opt to reserve a winery cabana or bocce court with bottle service for the day and watch the kids and dogs play on expansive grounds. Join a wine club to get the VIP treatment with access to special programs and complimentary experiences, allowing members to truly get to know a specific winemaker as well as stock the cellar with hard-to-find wines unavailable to the general public. Whatever the experience, life really is beautiful when it’s set in Sonoma County.
Sonoma County’s wine community has long championed sustainable practices and invested in their environment. They share a collective understanding about the importance of low-impact, organic and biodynamic agricultural practices as an integral part of the science and art that, when combined, produces outstanding wine. Many of the wineries are charter members of the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance, Fish Friendly Farming, and Sustainability in Farming. Some have achieved the goal of being 100% solar powered or signed on with the industry-wide effort called International Wineries for Climate Action. Caring for the land isn’t enough, Sonoma County wineries also cultivate a vibrant and diverse Sonoma County by elevating lives through charitable events and philanthropic giving. Vintners participating in the Sonoma County Wine Auction (SCWA) have raised millions of dollars to date for their community. The annual benefit has been recognized as one of Wine Spectator’s Top Charity Wine Auctions in the United States.
