It’s every parent’s greatest hope that their child is truly understood, listened to, and given the kind of support they need to navigate a complex world on their own. For parents of students with learning differences, it’s never too early to begin planning for your child’s bright and independent future. Oftentimes this includes highly individualized support for young adults as they transition from a structured classroom setting into the next phase of their life. At Winston Preparatory School, a specialized network of campuses for children of all ages with learning differences, education extends beyond the ordinary confines of coursework to identify and nourish your child’s unique learning style, delivering a solid foundation for success.
Nothing could be more crucial to your child’s development than ensuring they have the tools to flourish independently after leaving high school behind. Typically, a two-year gap program, Winston Transitions offers young people ages 17-21 a curriculum in traditional academics along with vital practical life skills like money management, independent living, and workplace socialization. Whether they seek to continue their education through enrolling in a four-year university or wish to begin a career, this multifaceted transition program is specifically designed to prepare students with learning differences for employability in the workplace.
Through assessment-driven individualized education, students learn how to process and internalize the skills they are taught every day.
Qualities of a Sustainable &
Independent Learner
Through the Focus Program, students receive daily one-on-one instruction from an invested expert educator targeting areas of greatest need. Throughout the process, Focus instructors work to deeply understand each student’s learning style while remaining in continuous communication with other teachers as well as parents on how best to support each individual. Family input is encouraged as part of a holistic approach to building up a young person so they will be ready to take care of themselves financially and emotionally when they strike out on their own.
With the goal of smoothly paving the way for grads to become self-sufficient, Winston Transitions places all students into internships throughout New York City from October through June for two days a week. By partnering with businesses in healthcare, customer service, technology, hospitality, and office administration, Winston Transitions provides each student the opportunity to thrive in an environment best suited to their greatest area of development while tapping into their strengths. Transitions maximizes the potential for a positive placement by taking several weeks to fully analyze each student before they begin their internship. Through this innovative program, Transitions students will gather real-world, on-the-job experience, with Manhattan’s rich and diverse atmosphere as their campus.
Envisioning a meaningful and autonomous life for your child should come easily, no matter how they learn and process information. At Winston Transitions, each student will be given the kind of preparation and encouragement they need to confidently enter adulthood better equipped for whatever lies ahead.

Set for success: Winston Preparatory School transitions students with learning differences into adulthood
Winston Transitions, focuses on effective feedback rather than grades or exams, reflecting a deep understanding and awareness of the need for developing and implementing the tools necessary to achieve a successful, fulfilling life as a sustainable and independent learner. Winston Innovation Lab, through its research, has developed the Qualities of Sustainable and Independent Learner (QSIL). Eight qualities have been identified to be key to post-secondary success and independence. Research and experience demonstrate that these are not exclusively inherent qualities but skills to be developed and employed.
They are resilience, social responsibility, self-advocacy, self-regulation, self-reflection, social and communication skills, problem-solving, and management and organization, which help students further understand themselves and others. Through QSIL skill development and individualized feedback, each student’s progress is continually monitored and adapted to reflect their goals.

Furthermore, Winston Transitions promotes knowledge on critical employment skills like job interviewing, time management, taking initiative, and understanding social networking. At Winston Transitions, educators know that the key to an enriching life does not just include academic achievement but also self-awareness and an ability to capitalize on personal strengths and interests.
Winston Transitions is dedicated to guiding individual students with learning differences along with their families. Though students play the most active role, parents are invited to stay up to date on their child’s progress through regular check-ins and meetings with teachers. By participating in their child’s growth, parents are given the chance to observe and reflect on the singular nature of their child’s learning needs, witnessing what makes them an extraordinary one-of-a-kind thinker with an exceptional perspective on the world.
Another foundational pillar of Winston Transitions is its application of the nationally recognized Winston Prep Continuous Feedback System. Through assessment-driven individualized education, students learn how to process and internalize the skills they are taught every day. The process starts with examining each student’s learning profile in the context of their neuropsychological differences, whether it be dyslexia, executive functioning difficulties (ADHD) or non-verbal learning disorders (NVLD). As each learner dives into their specially curated curriculum, the feedback model serves to adapt and refine the learning methods for each student. This kind of multi-dimensional education process has led to success rates of 90 percent of graduates moving on directly to higher education, employment, and/or training/certification programs in any given year. Transitions works with families to connect the remaining 10 percent of graduates to other supportive opportunities.
