Metropolitan College
Metropolitan College (or Metro College) is not a brick and mortar college. Instead, it is a partnership between the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the city of Louisville, UPS, The University of Louisville and Jefferson Community and Technical College. Metropolitan College was instituted in 1998 as a critical element of the incentive package that convinced UPS to remain in KY and to expand its major overnight hub, Worldport. This uniquely innovative education program offers access to post-secondary education opportunities for eligible employees in the Next Day Air (Night shift) operation at Worldport. Participating students attending at least part-time, and passing their classes with a C-grade or better, get their tuition paid to The University of Louisville or Jefferson Community & Technical College as well as book reimbursement money, bonuses, and other benefits. To fulfill the program’s mission of assisting students to integrate their academic, work and personal lives, Metropolitan College has a team of Student Development Counselors who assist students with a wide array of support services designed to enhance student success in the workplace, in the classroom, and in their future careers. Our #whatsyournumber campaign shows just how much money a student has saved by utilizing these benefits.
I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with our Metro College Program for over 18 years. This program has removed the financial barrier for students to attend college and obtain their degrees. It is very exciting to see our student employees reach their academic and career goals. The Metro College Program provides our students with educational opportunities and essential work skills that will enable them to be successful in the future.

What does successful workplace inclusion for people with disabilities look like? An innovative program at Worldport is game-changing, reframing disability inclusion not only as social responsibility but also as a means of meeting strategic business needs. The UPS Transitional Learning Center (TLC) is a cooperative effort between UPS and the Coalition for Workforce Diversity (via Options Unlimited, Inc.) to allow people with disabilities - who are sourced through the Coalition - to experience UPS jobs through hands-on training. UPS Worldport and its Transitional Learning Center are playing an important role in advancing innovative solutions for connecting people with disabilities to meaningful employment. The TLC offers a two-week, pre-employment paid training program that is staffed and operated by UPS training supervisors as well as Options Unlimited job coaches. The two-week program uses both classroom training and a simulated work environment to teach participants about job responsibilities, safety procedures, and soft skills. The TLC program includes a full simulation of the Worldport package handling facility, providing participants with invaluable hands-on practice. The Worldport culture of inclusion stems from a foundation of teamwork and integrity that permeates all business practices. With a culture that supports and celebrates all team members, people with disabilities are poised for success. The TLC has been instrumental in building on this culture of inclusion, and curating inclusive practices for people with disabilities through leadership support, training, and, above all, passion. A typical 4-hour day in TLC includes: Team building exercises Safe Work Methods Proper training for all procedures and tasks that will be required of the job Daily soft skills discussions Hands-on practice of available jobs
The UPS Training Center allows people with disabilities to come in at their pace, develop, and acquire the skills they need to be successful. Our job is to make them successful UPSers.

Options Unlimited receives referrals from the Kentucky Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Social Security Ticket to Work and Department for the Blind to provide these services at no cost to the clients. They provide a variety of services and supports to individuals so that they may achieve their desired vocational goals. Individuals would begin the Supported Employee process at the assessment and planning stage. During this time they will look at the individual’s interests and skills and match them to a potential employer through job development. On-the-job training and coaching is a support that is offered to ensure the success of the individuals in the Supported Employee Program. If the Employment Specialist felt like UPS would be a good fit for their client, they would help the client complete an application, prepare for the interview and would attend the job interview with the client. UPS would complete the steps of the interview which could include running a background, submitting fingerprints and submitting a drug screen. If the client was hired, he/she would be given a start date.
During the first two weeks of training, the employee would complete both classroom and hands-on experience. UPS has created a full simulation of Worldport to teach participants about job responsibilities, safety procedures, and soft skills. Once the two weeks training concludes, there is a seamless transition into the operation. Staff members continue to support TLC graduates as they transition into the workplace by providing information to the graduates’ new supervisors on learning needs and working style. Just as importantly, TLC graduates are able to return to future TLC classes to share their experiences and become mentors to current TLC participants. entered Planning Training programs

International Community Job Program
The UPS International Community Job Program (ICJP) is a program that assists applicants who speak limited-to-no English gain part-time employment at UPS. Applicants receive assistance with the application, interview process, additional documentation, training and human resource issues. Employees in the program may also qualify for UPS’ tuition assistance programs. Before 2016, applicants who could not speak English were not able to work at UPS due to the lack of training material and the internal structure to support them. There are over 70,000 foreign born individuals in the city of Louisville. Many of these individuals struggle to find employment because of their language barrier. The UPS ICJP has been designed to break through that language barrier in order to provide support to applicants and existing employees. The UPS ICJP is only four years old, but we are growing and improving every single day! We are actively revamping our internal structure in order to better support our ICJP participants. Currently, we are working on expanding the program into additional languages to increase the amount of people we may serve. We are doing this by strategically placing our multilingual supervisors and operations trainers in the areas where ICJP employees work. We have a dedicated team on the frontline every single day to help our ICJP employees be successful at UPS! “The International Community Job Program was not born with its existing name; it started with the name, “Global Gateways Program” or GGP. The program was rebranded in order to have a name that provides context for what the program offers.”

Coming from parents who both immigrated from Mexico has really motivated me to help people to be successful for their families! Never Forget Where You Come From!
Thalia Almenares Lozada I am a Cuban immigrant that came to the United States with a poor knowledge of English. I needed to be a financial support for my mother, but finding a job was demanding because I was required to speak the language. My journey starts with the Global Gateway Program (GGP). The GGP’s team gave me the opportunity of having a job, so that I could be able to meet my goals. I started working at UPS, and speaking English was not a requirement. The support given to me has allowed me to develop new skills and experiences. I was able to learn English, and one more time, the founders and members of the GGP gave me all their sustenance so that I could grow in the company. I was promoted as a Front Line Supervisor in the Revenue Recovery Department. During the time in this department I had the opportunity to welcome and train new members of the GGP. Also, I had the pleasure to participate and sign the renewal agreement of the Metro College Program. Then, I became part of the Human Resources group as an HR Generalist. As a part of the Global Gateway Program I am proud to say that it has been one of the best things that happened to me in this country, because it is, for the most part, responsible for all of my success.
Where are they now?

Antonio Abreu If I were going to describe UPS with a phrase, I would say that UPS is where the American dream starts. My name is Antonio Abreu, and I came from Cuba without speaking English in 2015 and started working with UPS in March of 2016 thanks to the Global Gateways Program. The GGP known as ICJP has given me the opportunity of having a job and a debt-free education simultaneously while attending to the University of Louisville. UPS has been my daily English class and the beginning of my professional career. I received a promotion to be a front-line supervisor to the Revenue Recovery department after a year and a half of being with the company. The Revenue Recovery team taught me that learning a new language was not a barrier to be a supervisor and conduct audits around Worldport. I am currently part of the training department, which I joined a year later. The training department, in conjunction with the ICJP, has provided me the tools of promoting diversity as part of the legacy of UPS. I have experienced the beginning of the American dream of many people from all over the world. By training them and explaining the educational benefits of UPS through the Metropolitan-College Program. UPS has been the first key to success in my career, and I am sure that it can be yours too.

However, students are still eligible to use Earn and Learn for graduate level coursework. I’ve been at UPS for a while now and I want to be in the Metropolitan College program. What do I need to do? Take a look at our Get Started Checklist to guide you through the process.
Who is eligible for the UPS Earn and Learn program? In the U.S., education assistance is offered to active part-time non-management (union and union free) employees at select locations within the UPS small package network. For Freight, only union free employees are eligible. Eligibility is immediate upon hire, and there are no management level approvals required to participate. Participating employees forfeit all education repayment eligibility at termination, even if the application and payment were approved and the semester completed, prior to termination. Employees who separate prior to physically receiving payment will not be eligible for reimbursement. Temporary, Co-Op, and Intern employees are not eligible for program participation. Who administers the UPS Earn and Learn program? The UPS Earn and Learn program is administered through a third party vendor, Edcor. How do I contact Edcor/Higher Education Resource Center (HERC)? Website for existing employees Fax number: 1-248-283-8723 Phone: 1-800-413-7784 The Edcor Call Center hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (EST)
How do I apply for the UPS Earn and Learn program? Employees should discuss academic educational plans with their manager in conjunction with their career plan, and read the Education Benefit Policy and the Undergraduate Earn and Learn program guideline document on UPSers.com. Search for "education." Next visit the EDCOR website, and complete the online Application within 30 days of the semester start date. Employees are able to keep track of the status of their submitted application via trackmystatus.com. Participants will also receive regular updates and approvals directly to the email address that is on file in the Edcor system. Note that UPS provides UPS email addresses for most employees, but employees are able to enter a personal email if they prefer. If a personal email is entered, all notifications will go to the personal email address. If no personal email address is provided, all notifications will be sent to the participant’s UPS e-mail. When do I file my application? Applications must be submitted no more than 90 days before the start of the academic term and no later than 30 days after the start of the academic term. Applications received outside the established deadlines will be rejected, and render the employee ineligible for education reimbursement.
UPS Earn and Learn Tuition Assistance Program
Who is eligible for the Education Assistance Program (EAP)? In the U.S., all active full-time union free employees, regardless of business unit or work location, are eligible to participate in the Full-Time Education Assistance Program. Participation in the program requires management approval for all courses, and additional District Human Resources Manager approval for graduate level courses. Participating employees forfeit all education repayment eligibility at termination; even if the application and payment were approved and the semester was completed prior to termination. Employees who separate prior to physically receiving payment will not be eligible for reimbursement. Co-op and intern employees are not eligible for the program. When do I file my application? Applications must be submitted no more than 90 days before the start of the academic term and no later than 30 days after the start of the academic term. Applications received outside the established deadlines will be rejected, and render the employee ineligible for education reimbursement. Does the Education Assistance Program support graduate studies for part-time package handlers? Applying for Master's degree programs under the scope of the EAP is limited to management (Supervisors and above) employees. Requests to participate in any Master's degree program must be accompanied by a detailed business justification (contact the Human Resources Service Center) and approved by the employee’s manager and District Human Resources Manager. Master’s degree programs are reimbursable up to $150 (TESC included) per credit hour. When can I log into the EDCOR website to view my EAP details? Once someone is hired and they have a GEMS ID (Employee ID), they are ready to log on to EDCOR. To find out how you can earn a college degree and grow your career with UPS, visit the EDCOR website. First time login instructions: Login using your employee ID and enter your six-digit birthday as your password (example: 04/05/88=040588) To get started, access the program information tab. Is there a Mandatory Payback requirement for full-time employees leaving UPS? All full-time employee coursework reimbursed through the EAP carries a payback requirement covering the previous two-years of tuition program use. If a full-time employee leaves UPS for any reason other than retirement, or displacement*, UPS requires the employee to repay, in full, any tuition program reimbursement received during the previous two years. Full-time employees staying two-years after their last reimbursement are released from the payback obligation. UPS shall have the right to deduct from the employee’s paycheck(s) the full amount of all tuition reimbursement owed to UPS in accordance with this program and any applicable state laws. If the final paycheck is insufficient to fulfill a former employee’s reimbursement repayment obligation, the employee shall remit to UPS the full remaining balance no later than thirty (30) days after termination. UPS reserves the right to pursue the payback obligation through the collection process and/or court action. *For full-time union free employees whose separation is approved under the Separation Allowance Plan (SAP) tuition may be reimbursed.
Can a STW student work only during summer break? No, the student will start their co-op in the summer, but the job is a commitment until graduation. Can a student get more hours than the usual 15-20 per week? Normally, a STW student works 15-20 hours per week but there are times that the sort span may last longer, especially during November-December (our busiest time of the year). A student may be scheduled to work additional days during peak season. There are opportunities to double shift during the year. Can a STW student report to work if they do not attend school? No, they cannot report to work if the absence is due to an illness. Yes, if the student has a doctor or dentist appointment, students must supply a note and report directly to work. What if there is a day that a student is required to stay at school? If the high school requires a student to stay at school due to a mandatory event, students will be scheduled off from work that day. These days are normally worked out in advance. If the event is not mandatory a student must ask off just like any other job. There is no guarantee of time off on non-mandatory days. Is Spring Break a holiday from work? No, Spring Break is a normal work week. If a student wants that week off, they need to request the time off from their supervisor. There is no guarantee of time off on these days. How is a student’s high school co-op grade determined? The co-op grade is determined by the student’s performance and attendance both at work and in their college class/extended academic course. What college classes are offered with the STW program? We offer basic education requirements that are needed for most degrees that are pursued in college. For example: English 101, English 102, College Algebra, Basic Public Speaking, Psychology, Humanities, Introduction to Business, Osha safety, Blueprint reading, etc. The classes are taught on site at UPS in our UPS Education and Technical Center (UPSTEC) by Jefferson Community and Technical College. A College Ready course is offered to students that do not meet the minimum requirements for JCTC. This course may assist students to meet high school benchmarks. How many days a week does a student attend the JCTC college class? We offer many options for our students to be successful. The hybrid classes meet once a week, which includes extensive online coursework outside the classroom. Students are in class from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm one or two days per week. Students will take one class in the fall and one in the spring. What if a student does not pass the college class? If a student does not successfully complete their college class, they will be responsible to reimburse UPS for the cost of the class. The failure will also show on the student’s college transcript. What if I leave the program early? The commitment to the STW program is until high school graduation. If a student leaves before graduation the student would receive a W (Withdrawal) in the college class and be responsible for reimbursing UPS for the cost of the class. The student may receive a failing grade for their high school co-op, in addition to the concerns with returning to a full day of high school classes. The high school consequences depend on the policies of each individual high school. What are the student’s options after high school graduation? A student in the STW program has several options once they graduate high school: Leave UPS after high school graduation Continue with employment at UPS Continue with employment at UPS and utilize Metro College or Earn and Learn
What is the UPS School to Work Program? The UPS School to Work Program is a co-op program that provides high school seniors the opportunity to attend high school in the morning, work at UPS 3 to 4 hours per day as a package handler and take extended academic courses during their senior year. The program allows a student to earn high school credit, earn college credit and earn a paycheck while gaining valuable job experience, as they complete the requirements needed for their high school diploma. A STW student has the opportunity to stay at UPS after graduation to take advantage of UPS’s post-secondary education programs. What does a student need to be qualified for the School to Work Program? 2.0 Cumulative GPA(freshman, sophomore and junior year) Good high school attendance (90%) A recommendation from student’s high school counselor Be 16 years of age What benefits does a student receive as a UPS employee? UPS employees receive a weekly paycheck, health, dental, vision, prescription, life and disability insurance after 9 months of employment. Employees also earn paid holidays and vacation time. Does a student get additional benefits from being in the STW Program? Yes, Students earn the same benefits that any employee earns, but STW students receive additional benefits that include: High school elective credit May earn up to 6 college credit hours (one class each semester); UPS pays tuition and provides textbooks. Support from a STW mentor Automatic placement into UPS’s post-secondary education programs, Metropolitan College and Earn and Learn Job experience working for a Fortune 50 company What is a Mentor? The role of a School to Work mentor is to assist high school seniors in successfully completing all three parts of the STW program: high school, work and extended academic courses that may Include college classes. The STW Mentor works directly with the students by visiting them in the workplace and before the college classes. Mentors assist students with questions, issues, etc. Mentors also provide information and direction to help students continue their path to post-secondary education. Can a student play sports and participate in the STW Program? Most major sports do not work with the STW program due to the release times from work and the college class, along with the time commitment a student athlete would need to make to their team. If a student is interested in the STW program, it is recommended they talk with their coach to see if he/she will work around the STW schedule. Students that are in the program must be able to work their scheduled hours and attend their college class on scheduled days . Can a student participate in extracurricular activities and participate in the STW Program? Yes, as long as the activity or club does not interfere with the student’s work release time and/or their college classes. See sports above. How does a student apply? High School Juniors must attend a presentation on the STW program and be eligible/ recommended to participate. A student must wait until a recommendation is received from the high school counselor before applying. Eligible students will receive a letter with instructions on the online application and the interview process once they are recommended. Can a student work at UPS while in high school without participating in the STW Program? No, the only way to work at UPS during high school is through the STW program. Students that do not participate in the STW program can apply to UPS before the end of their senior year. A high school student will not be hired until after they graduate from high school. IF there is a need for seasonal help at UPS, students who are at least 17 years of age could be considered. UPS package volume and school schedules determine this each year.
What do I need to do to get into the program/how do I meet requirements? All students must meet a cumulative GPA requirement of 2.5, have acceptable attendance, and must have a Counselor and Parent recommendation form signed and sent to that students assigned LOOP Recruiter. (See ‘Meet the Team’ tab to find yours!) What is the difference between Metro College and LOOP? KY LOOP is the housing stipend piece that is associated with the Metro College program. KY LOOP students are technically Metro College students, just with an additional stipend and the requirement to attend Jefferson. These students are only from outer lying counties in KY and not from the Louisville area. What counties are EXCLUDED (not able to participate)? Counties excluded from participation are Oldham, Jefferson, Shelby, Spencer, and Bullitt. All other counties in the state of KY are eligible. Do students have to live somewhere specific? No, Students are paid directly $325 dollars a month for housing costs incurred by living in Louisville. This benefit is available for up to 36 months, or until attainment of an Associate’s degree. Does UPS require a lease, or documentation on living situation? No, we pay the student funds directly. Students make the decision where to live. If students have friends and families they would like to stay with, they can do so and still keep the housing stipend. Can students live in ‘Student affiliated housing’ or UofL Housing? Yes! If students want to be involved with the UofL community, they are welcome to! We do not restrict student housing arrangements whatsoever. Where is a good resource for me to find information about potential housing arrangements? You can access information on various housing options through our ‘Live in Lou’ Tab of this website. Additionally, you can look at some suggested housing found on the KY LOOP Page in the How It Works section.
Can I do the LOOP program and then go to UofL? Yes! We highly encourage students to begin their academic career at JCTC, utilize the housing stipend and funds to become settled, then make the transition to UofL to receive their bachelor’s degree. *The only change to the program is that as soon as a student moves on to UofL they will lose their housing stipend and simply become Metro College students. Can I go home? Or leave UPS to return home during the program? Yes! You will have two days off every week, whether it be Friday and Saturday, or Saturday and Sunday. Students also have paid vacation time after 1 year of continuous employment. If students need to call-in and miss their assigned shift, they will be unpaid for that day’s shift. We encourage students to exercise responsibility. What happens if I stop working? If you stop working at UPS you will no longer receive your educational benefits, including your housing stipend. So, as long as you would like to continue to receive your college tuition free and housing benefits you must be an active employee. This includes summer school. UPS pays for summer courses, and the KY LOOP program will continue paying your housing stipend during the summer even if you are not enrolled in summer courses. What should I do if I do not like my work area? If you are having difficulty with your work area, you will need to communicate this with your management team. However, once you are hired, you will be assigned to that area for a minimum of one year. Can I work day shift and still be in the program? Day shift is available for KY LOOP students, however, it is to your benefit to work nights. There is better class availability at JCTC & U of L, and you will not be eligible for the semester bonus of $850 (before taxes). What happens if I do not pass 6 credit hours in a semester? Each student will get a one-time petition opportunity to stay in the LOOP program. The petition requires an explanation as to why the student was not successful in their classes and what changes they will make moving forward. Students can access the petition form through the Metro College office. If you are a student who is… Homeschooled Went to another college before this one or are currently enrolled at another institution Have never been to college Are in Job Corps, or any other scenario in which you have completed your high school diploma... You are still welcome to join the program! We will have some different requirements so please feel free to reach out to your recruiter if you know who they are, or askloop@ups.com and briefly explain your situation and we will respond to you with necessary follow-up steps to complete.
