Can a STW student work only during summer break?
No, the student will start their co-op in the summer, but the job is a commitment until graduation.
Can a student get more hours than the usual 15-20 per week?
Normally, a STW student works 15-20 hours per week but there are times that the sort span may last longer, especially during November-December (our busiest time of the year). If the high school requires a student to stay at school due to a mandatory event, students will be scheduled off from work that day. These days are normally worked out in advance. If the event is not mandatory a student must ask off just like any other job. There is no guarantee of time off on non-mandatory days.
Is Spring Break a holiday from work?
No, Spring Break is a normal work week. If a student wants that week off, they need to request the time off from their supervisor. There is no guarantee of time off on these days.
How is a student’s high school co-op grade determined?
The co-op grade is determined by the student’s performance and attendance both at work and in their college class/extended academic course.
What college classes are offered with the STW program?
We offer basic education requirements that are needed for most degrees that are pursued in college. For example: English 101, English 102, College Algebra, Basic Public Speaking, Psychology, Humanities, Introduction to Business, Osha safety, Blueprint reading, etc. The classes are taught on site at UPS in our UPS Education and Technical Center (UPSTEC) by Jefferson Community and Technical College. A College Ready course is offered to students that do not meet the minimum requirements for JCTC. This course may assist students to meet high school benchmarks.
How many days a week does a student attend the JCTC college class?
We offer many options for our students to be successful. The hybrid classes meet once a week, which includes extensive online coursework outside the classroom. Students are in class from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm one or two days per week. Students will take one class in the fall and one in the spring.
What if a student does not pass the college class?
If a student does not successfully complete their college class, they will be responsible to reimburse UPS for the cost of the class. The failure will also show on the student’s college transcript.
What if I leave the program early?
The commitment to the STW program is until high school graduation. If a student leaves before graduation the student would receive a W (Withdrawal) in the college class and be responsible for reimbursing UPS for the cost of the class. The student may receive a failing grade for their high school co-op, in addition to the concerns with returning to a full day of high school classes. The high school consequences depend on the policies of each individual high school.
What are the student’s options after high school graduation?
A student in the STW program has several options once they graduate high school:
Leave UPS after high school graduation
Continue with employment at UPS
Continue with employment at UPS and utilize Metro College or Earn and Learn

Can a student play sports and participate in the STW Program?
Most major sports do not work with the STW program due to the release times from work and the college class, along with the time commitment a student athlete would need to make to their team.

School to Work
What do I need to do to get into the program/how do I meet requirements?
All students must meet a cumulative GPA requirement of 2.5, have acceptable attendance, and must have a Counselor and Parent recommendation form signed and sent to that students assigned LOOP Recruiter. (See ‘Meet the Team’ tab to find yours!)
What is the difference between Metro College and LOOP?
UPS LOOP is the housing stipend piece that is associated with the Metro College program. UPS LOOP students are technically Metro College students, just with an additional stipend and the requirement to attend Jefferson. These students are only from outer lying counties in KY and not from the Louisville area.
What counties are EXCLUDED (not able to participate)?
None! All KY counties are now eligible for the UPS LOOP program, as well as the following Southern Indiana Counties: Clark, Crawford, Dearborn, Floyd, Franklin, Harrison, Jefferson, Ohio, Ripley, Scott, Switzerland, and Washington.
Do students have to live somewhere specific?
No, Students are paid directly $325 dollars a month for housing costs incurred by living in Louisville. This benefit is available for up to 36 months, or until attainment of an Associate’s degree.
Does UPS require a lease, or documentation on living situation?
No, we pay the student funds directly. Students make the decision where to live. If students have friends and families they would like to stay with, they can do so and still keep the housing stipend.
Can students live in ‘Student affiliated housing’ or UofL Housing?
Yes! If students want to be involved with the UofL community, they are welcome to! We do not restrict student housing arrangements whatsoever.
Where is a good resource for me to find information about potential housing arrangements?
You can access information on various housing options through our ‘Live in Lou’ Tab of this website. Additionally, you can look at some suggested housing found on the UPS LOOP Page in the How It Works section.
Can I do the LOOP program and then go to UofL?
Yes! We highly encourage students to begin their academic career at JCTC, utilize the housing stipend and funds to become settled, then make the transition to UofL to receive their bachelor’s degree.
*The only change to the program is that as soon as a student moves on to UofL they will lose their housing stipend and simply become Metro College students.
Can I go home? Or leave UPS to return home during the program?
Yes! You will have two days off every week, whether it be Friday and Saturday, or Saturday and Sunday. Students also have paid vacation time after 1 year of continuous employment. If students need to call-in and miss their assigned shift, they will be unpaid for that day’s shift.
We encourage students to exercise responsibility.
What happens if I stop working?
If you stop working at UPS you will no longer receive your educational benefits, including your housing stipend. So, as long as you would like to continue to receive your college tuition free and housing benefits you must be an active employee. This includes summer school. UPS pays for summer courses, and the UPS LOOP program will continue paying your housing stipend during the summer even if you are not enrolled in summer courses.
What should I do if I do not like my work area?
If you are having difficulty with your work area, you will need to communicate this with your management team. However, once you are hired, you will be assigned to that area for a minimum of one year.
Can I work day shift and still be in the program?
Day shift is available for UPS LOOP students, however, it is to your benefit to work nights. There is better class availability at JCTC & U of L, and you will not be eligible for the semester bonus of $850 (before taxes).
What happens if I do not pass 6 credit hours in a semester?
Each student will get a one-time petition opportunity to stay in the LOOP program. The petition requires an explanation as to why the student was not successful in their classes and what changes they will make moving forward. Students can access the petition form through the Metro College office.
If you are a student who is…
Homeschooled
Went to another college before this one or are currently enrolled at another institution
Have never been to college
Are in Job Corps, or any other scenario in which you have
completed your high school diploma...
You are still welcome to join the program! We will have some different requirements so please feel free to reach out to your recruiter if you know who they are, or askloop@ups.com and briefly explain your situation and we will respond to you with necessary follow-up steps to complete.
