International Community Job Program
The UPS International Community Job Program (ICJP) is a program that assists applicants who speak limited-to-no English gain part-time employment at UPS. Applicants receive assistance with the application, interview process, additional documentation, training and human resource issues. Employees in the program may also qualify for UPS’ tuition assistance programs.
Before 2016, applicants who could not speak English were not able to work at UPS due to the lack of training material and the internal structure to support them. There are over 70,000 foreign born individuals in the city of Louisville. Many of these individuals struggle to find employment because of their language barrier. The UPS ICJP has been designed to break through that language barrier in order to provide support to applicants and existing employees.
The UPS ICJP is only four years old, but we are growing and improving every single day! We are actively revamping our internal structure in order to better support our ICJP participants. Currently, we are working on expanding the program into additional languages to increase the amount of people we may serve. We are doing this by strategically placing our multilingual supervisors and operations trainers in the areas where ICJP employees work. We have a dedicated team on the frontline every single day to help our ICJP employees be successful at UPS!
“The International Community Job Program was not born with its existing name; it started with the name, “Global Gateways Program” or GGP. The program was rebranded in order to have a name that provides context for what the program offers.”

BENEFITS
“Through the ICJP Program I have been able to train and assist UPSers with language barriers in the operation, in many ways. Coming from parents who both immigrated from Mexico has really motivated me to help people to be successful for their families! While I was growing up my parents didn’t have access to a program like the ICJP to help them professionally, so it made it that much harder for them to get a job and take care of our family. I will forever be grateful to be a part of the UPS ICJP team. I get to help others overcome hardships every single day.”

Thalia Almenares Lozada
I am a Cuban immigrant that came to the United States with a poor knowledge of English. I needed to be a financial support for my mother, but finding a job was demanding because I was required to speak the language. My journey starts with the Global Gateway Program (GGP). The GGP’s team gave me the opportunity of having a job, so that I could be able to meet my goals. I started working at UPS, and speaking English was not a requirement. The support given to me has allowed me to develop new skills and experiences. I was able to learn English, and one more time, the founders and members of the GGP gave me all their sustenance so that I could grow in the company. I was promoted as a Front Line Supervisor in the Revenue Recovery Department. During the time in this department I had the opportunity to welcome and train new members of the GGP. Also, I had the pleasure to participate and sign the renewal agreement of the Metro College Program. Then, I became part of the Human Resources group as an HR Generalist. As a part of the Global Gateway Program I am proud to say that it has been one of the best things that happened to me in this country, because it is, for the most part, responsible for all of my success.

If I were going to describe UPS with a phrase, I would say that UPS is where the American dream starts. My name is Antonio Abreu, and I came from Cuba without speaking English in 2015 and started working with UPS in March of 2016 thanks to the Global Gateways Program. The GGP known as ICJP has given me the opportunity of having a job and a debt-free education simultaneously while attending to the University of Louisville. UPS has been my daily English class and the beginning of my professional career. I received a promotion to be a front-line supervisor to the Revenue Recovery department after a year and a half of being with the company. The Revenue Recovery team taught me that learning a new language was not a barrier to be a supervisor and conduct audits around Worldport. I am currently part of the training department, which I joined a year later. The training department, in conjunction with the ICJP, has provided me the tools of promoting diversity as part of the legacy of UPS. I have experienced the beginning of the American dream of many people from all over the world. By training them and explaining the educational benefits of UPS through the Metropolitan-College Program. UPS has been the first key to success in my career, and I am sure that it can be yours too.
