Who says people are leaving California? If AbbVie's South San Francisco campus is any indication, the Bay Area is still the heart of biotech investment and innovation.
Since 2013, AbbVie has been a strong presence in the Bay Area. Doubling down this year, AbbVie is committing to the area by establishing one of its most significant footprints outside its headquarters in the Chicago area.
The global biopharmaceutical leader has fully occupied its new Bay Area facility, a 480,000 square-foot presence in South San Francisco that will house more than 1,000 employees operating across various functions including R&D, Commercial, Corporate, and Operations. The site, known as AbbVie Bay Area, serves as a hub for AbbVie teams to pursue R&D and commercialize world-class medicines, specifically in oncology. Key research areas include immuno-oncology, tumor targeting, and tumor dependency. The facility is also home to the commercial operations of an AbbVie flagship oncology therapy developed locally in the Bay Area.

“We’ve had a longstanding presence in locations like Redwood City, South San Francisco and Sunnyvale, but our new Bay Area facility will be the first chance to work together under one roof,” shared Mo Trikha, Ph.D., AbbVie Bay Area site head and vice president and head, oncology early development. “This is an incredible opportunity for our cross-functional teams to collaborate, learn from one another and uncover new insights that have the potential to help patients in need.”
AbbVie in the Bay Area will also include state-of-the art labs, flexible workspaces spread across two separate towers, and an on-campus amenities center complete with a fitness facility and outdoor terrace.
Trikha explained that the inspiration to establish a central Bay Area campus stemmed from a shared philosophy with the local life sciences community surrounding innovation and collective partnership.
“We have a long history in healthcare – bringing more than 130 years of experience in patient care – but we’re advancing our aim to be as nimble as any biotech. We also strongly identify with the collaborative spirit in the region, and here, we are actively partnering and engaging with the local life sciences community as well.”
AbbVie’s South San Francisco campus is also just minutes from many of the company’s established partners, including Calico Life Sciences, and many other biotechs. “Our recent opt-in of a bispecific monoclonal antibody from Teneobio is one example of an active collaboration that nurtures innovative technologies with the ultimate goal to rapidly advance medicine to patients in need,” said Trikha. AbbVie maintains close ties with local academic partners at UCSF and organizations throughout the state like California Life Sciences and MBC BioLabs. It also has a productive collaboration with Scripps Research.

A Redefined Bay Area Presence
Ann Tomlin, AbbVie’s Bay Area head of human resources, shared that another benefit to the Bay Area location is that it’s building on AbbVie’s strategy to sustain a longstanding local presence by attracting and developing top talent in California.
“AbbVie in the Bay Area will be a place where it’s easy to learn from and work with the most creative minds in biopharmaceuticals and technology. Not only are we creating opportunities to do fulfilling work, we’re also shaping a unique local culture for talented professionals.”
Bay Area employees will be exposed to continuous development to help them grow their career and contribute at the highest level. Learning & Development programs for professionals and leaders will be just one feature at our new campus. Being co-located creates opportunities to network and collaborate, opening more doors to different roles and experiences for individuals to build their careers at AbbVie.
AbbVie’s campus is minutes away from hundreds of life sciences companies in South San Francisco, offering unlimited opportunities for scientific collaboration.
Making a Remarkable Impact for Patients
AbbVie in the Bay Area has ambitious goals for the future. Still, its vision remains the same: produce innovative medicines for patients, build a robust pipeline and give back to the local community.
“AbbVie in the Bay Area will be the bridge between our global footprint and our local presence, and we won’t take our location for granted,” Tomlin said. “We want to be an active player in the local life sciences community; from our partnerships and R&D collaborations, to our efforts to boost STEM education and invest in the next generation of talent; we want to be a neighbor that’s feeding back into the broader community.”
“AbbVie in the Bay Area is on the move,” adds Trikha “We’re pushing the limits of the science and technology that drive R&D, finding new ways to tackle the thorniest questions in oncology drug development and a passion to rapidly develop transformative new medicines for patients.”
