I hope to go into forensic nursing — a specialized field that combines healthcare with the pursuit of justice — to care for and support victims of sexual assault and abuse by protecting their dignity by treating them with the respect they deserve and ensuring they receive the best medical attention possible. Forensic nursing is not spoken of often, but it’s crucial in bridging the gap between nursing and the legal system. The idea of standing beside individuals who have experienced trauma and helping to be part of their healing process truly resonates with me.

For me, nursing is more than a profession. It’s about advocating for the vulnerable and ensuring all voices are heard. As a Black woman with immigrant family members, I’ve directly witnessed the struggles that underrepresented communities face when seeking and accessing healthcare. Representation is vital in healthcare, and patients should have nurses who look like them and understand their unique needs. My goal is to become a nurse who provides exceptional patient care and uses her background to advocate for empathetic and culturally competent care.

To me, nursing is both a profession and a passion, and beyond bedside care, nursing includes advocacy, research, and lifelong learning. One healthcare issue I’m passionate about is improving post-operative nausea and vomiting management (PONV), which affects patient recovery, prolongs hospital stays, and increases healthcare costs — yet it still remains a challenge for providers. By combining my passion for evidence-based practice, education, and leadership, I hope to improve patient outcomes and help advance the nursing profession.

Nursing combines science, compassion, and emotional support to provide holistic care. While I didn’t fully understand my medical journey at the time, I vividly remember the emotional care and support the nurses provided. Through my personal and clinical experiences, I’ve realized that small gestures like listening, reassuring, and simply being present can significantly impact a patient. By fostering trust and comfort, nurses create a sense of security during the most difficult times, and that compassionate approach is what I aspire to offer as a nurse.

One healthcare issue I am particularly passionate about is metabolic syndrome. This condition (which includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels) significantly increases the risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even renal failure. When my grandmother passed away due to complications related to chronic kidney disease, it deeply affected me, igniting a passion to work in healthcare and advocate for better prevention and management of chronic conditions.

My experiences in dermatology, community health, and psychiatric care have reinforced my passion for caring for patients in a holistic manner and for healthcare accessibility, especially in underserved communities. As a future Family Nurse Practitioner, I want to bridge gaps in primary care by emphasizing patient education, preventative screenings, and community outreach. My goal is to empower patients to take charge of their health by making resources more accessible and understandable, and to equip people with the tools they need to lead healthier lives.

To me, nursing is defined as providing compassionate, hands-on care while addressing deeper systemic issues in healthcare. An important issue I'm passionate about is healthcare inequity. Volunteering and supporting families affected by violence deepened my awareness of barriers like language, cost, and racial bias. These experiences drive my goal to engage in community nursing where I can expand preventive care and advocate for underserved populations. To improve access, I plan to organize health fairs, vaccination drives, and chronic illness workshops.

I want to become a pediatric nurse because every child deserves to feel supported, especially in their most vulnerable moments. Whether it’s offering reassurance, easing their fears, or simply making them smile, I want to be a steady presence they can rely on. The healthcare setting can be intimidating, especially for young patients, so I want to be someone who not only treats their medical needs but also makes them feel seen and cared for. Nursing is about being there for people when they need it most. And for me, there’s no greater purpose than that.

My passion lies in obstetrics and neonatal nursing, where I hope to provide compassionate care to mothers and newborns while addressing health disparities. I’m deeply committed to bridging the gap between communication and access barriers in healthcare, particularly for Spanish-speaking communities. As a fluent Spanish speaker, I’ve witnessed the impact of language in healthcare, creating confusion and fear for patients and families. I strive to reduce these obstacles by ensuring reliable translation methods and clear communication for diverse populations.

My parents are both nurses, and their dedication showed me that nursing is about more than technical skills; it’s about making a difference. As I look ahead to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, I’m committed to focusing on empowering women, particularly young mothers, by providing them with the resources and care they deserve. Through my volunteer work, I’ve been able to contribute to initiatives that educate young mothers about their health. This experience deepened my commitment to women’s health and reinforced my drive to make a tangible difference.

I am particularly passionate about psychiatric care and helping individuals navigate their mental health challenges with compassion, understanding, and support. Mental health is often overlooked or stigmatized, but I believe everyone deserves access to respectful and patient-centered care. My experiences have shown me how vital it is for patients to feel heard and supported, especially in psychiatric settings where they may feel misunderstood. Nursing is my calling, and I am committed to making a meaningful difference in psychiatric care.

I’m passionate about bridging the gap in health inequities, particularly in marginalized communities that often lack access to essential healthcare services. These populations frequently face barriers like socioeconomic status, lack of education, and limited resources, contributing to poor health. I’m committed to this cause and have taught individuals at my local health clinic about managing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and other comorbidities. I’ll continue to advocate for equitable healthcare, especially for underserved populations.

Nursing is more than just a profession to me; it is a calling that requires compassion, resilience, and dedication to patient care. Through my experiences in the medical field and my work in imaging and breast health, I’ve seen how early detection has saved lives. My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer, but thanks to early detection and treatment, she’s a survivor. Her journey has made me deeply aware of the importance of regular screenings, and as a result, I’m passionate about breast health and the importance of preventive screenings like mammograms.

Dealing with a lifelong condition can be isolating, but a good nurse can make all the difference, which is why one issue I care deeply about in healthcare is making sure people with chronic illnesses feel like more than just their diagnosis. My experiences as a patient with Crohn’s Disease have allowed me to see the different sides of nursing and have given me a perspective that I want to bring into my career as a nurse. I want to be the kind of nurse who helps patients feel comfortable, valued, and cared for — because I know firsthand how much that matters.

I’m passionate about mental health integration in primary care. Mental health is often overlooked, despite its profound impact on overall well-being. Many individuals struggle in silence due to stigma or a lack of resources. As a nurse, I want to be a part of the movement that normalizes mental health discussions and ensures that every patient has access to the emotional and psychological support they deserve. Nursing is a profession of purpose, and through it, I aim to make meaningful contributions to my patients and the healthcare system.
