When Do You Feel Your Black Beauty Is Celebrated and Represented on Campus? “[Within Black organizations on campus]...we promote acceptance amongst ourselves but seek to reshape perceptions of our community to outsiders through work ethic, community service, faith, and outreach. The ability to crush stereotypes and allow others to see us as the creative, accomplished individuals we are is a beautiful thing in itself.”
Julissa on being a winner of Honoring Black Brilliance: “I feel honored to have been selected as a recipient of Honoring Black Brilliance. To me, Black Brilliance means embracing your culture and succeeding against all odds because of it. I can proudly say that as a Black woman, I am persistent, hardworking, and versatile.”

Spelman College | Psychology | Class of 2024
When Do You Feel Your Black Beauty Is Celebrated and Represented on Campus? “Black Brilliance is woven into the courses we take, projected in the scholarship and service opportunities we embark upon, the lifelong friendships we nurture and the future we pray and hope for beyond college to make a positive impact and to change the world in a Brilliant and Beautiful way... There is no “I” in Beauty. I am a reflection/celebration of my sister and she is a reflection/celebration of me.”
Anjali on being a winner of Honoring Black Brilliance: “To have been given this opportunity to represent Honoring Black Brilliance as a winner cannot be measured! Humbly, my hope is to be able to be an example for all young women to recognize that there is brilliance in all of us.”
Kaidyn White
Xavier Univ. of Louisiana | Biology | Class of 2026
When Do You Feel Your Black Beauty Is Celebrated and Represented on Campus? “Going to an HBCU showed me and people who look like me that pride and self-care are beautiful. Walking to class every morning I look around and see all variations of Black beauty, whether it be the flawless complexions... or the wide variety of makeup looks... I know I am beautiful, and everywhere I look I see my peers expressing their beauty in a multitude of ways.”
Kaidyn on being a winner of Honoring Black Brilliance: “Being awarded with the Honoring Black Brilliance opportunity is such a blessing to me. I am truly thankful…to be an inspiration to young Black women who may not have representation on their campus. Growing up, I rarely saw Black women embracing their beauty and exuding confidence in themselves.”
Madison Webb
Harvard College | Political Science | Class of 2025
When Do You Feel Your Black Beauty Is Celebrated and Represented on Campus? “Several beautiful shades of brown are represented on campus, and in every shade I see a part of myself. So celebrating and affirming another Black person’s beauty–from our beautiful broad noses to creative, colorful makeup looks–feels like I’m affirming the parts of myself that I overlook or take for granted.”
Madison on being a winner of Honoring Black Brilliance: “To be an Honoring Black Brilliance winner makes me feel like the work that I have done and continue to do to get me where I am today, with the help of my family and friends, is not in vain. Honoring Black Brilliance in my peers and family helps me recognize the beauty and brilliance within myself.”
Ambria Underwood
Samford University | Nursing | Class of 2023
When Do You Feel Your Black Beauty Is Celebrated and Represented on Campus? “It’s Friday night [and you’re] locked in a room prepping your hair for the week…surrounded by the laughter of your friends who turn into sisters. This is the silver lining of going to a PWI…you have to create a “mini HBCU” experience in order to keep your identity, sanity, and beauty intact…The celebration is not big but is just the right amount of hope needed in order to feel at home.”
Ambria on being a winner of Honoring Black Brilliance: “To be an Honoring Black Brilliance winner is an honor. After talking with my family and friends about [winning], I realized that it has allowed me to reflect on what being a Black woman trying to obtain higher education is really like. It’s a blissful experience that is entangled with opportunities to bond
with people who are different and like you.”
