A PCP is your partner in managing your health. Consider the following factors when choosing a provider.

Health Insurance
Check with your health insurance plan to confirm the primary care provider you are interested in seeing is in your plan’s network.
Selecting an “in-network” provider can help reduce your out-of-pocket costs and may prevent unexpected bills for out-of-network services.

Provider Type
Consider a provider who makes you feel comfortable, speaks your preferred language, is board-certified and has the credentials to treat your specific health concerns. There are several types of PCPs to choose from, including:
Family Medicine: Family medicine doctors treat patients of all agesand manage chronic conditions, making them a good choice for the whole family.
Geriatrics: Geriatricians care for patients ages 65 and older, specializing in health issues specific to older adults.
Internal Medicine: Internal medicine doctors focus on adult patients, providing specialized care and managing multiple chronic conditions.
Osteopathic Medicine (DO): Osteopathic doctors have the same training as medical doctors (MDs) but may emphasize a holistic approach to health, focusing on the body’s natural healing abilities.
Nurse Practitioner: Nurse practitioners can conduct exams, prescribe medications and focus on preventive care. They are a valuable option for primary care.
Location
Selecting a primary care office close to home or work can make it easier to attend appointments. Consider whether you can easily travel to the office using your preferred mode of transportation.
Also ask about whether lab work or procedures can be completed on-site or if you will need to visit a different location for these services.
Convenience
Make sure the PCP’s office hours are convenient for your schedule. If you have trouble making time for appointments, see if the PCP offers video visits or has same-day clinics available to meet your needs.
Communication
Getting in touch with your provider should be easy. Are there convenient ways to schedule appointments and communicate with your provider online? Does the office have a friendly staff to field your calls and questions?
