How to Prepare for a Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colon cancer screening. Proper bowel preparation helps ensure your doctor has a clear view of your colon during the procedure.
Here’s what to expect:
A clean colon means an accurate exam. Follow your prep instructions closely for the best results.
1 Week Before
Review your medications with your doctor — some (like blood thinners and diabetes medications) may need to be adjusted
Eat a low-fiber diet, avoiding nuts, seeds, popcorn and other high-fiber foods
Limit foods that contain red or purple dyes
Stock up on clear liquids, such as broths, light-colored juices and sports drinks
Pick up your bowel preparation kit
1 Day Before
Switch to a clear liquid diet — no solid foods
Drink plenty of water and approved clear fluids, such as broths, light-colored juices and sodas, sports drinks, tea and coffee without milk or cream
Avoid alcohol
Start your bowel preparation, as directed by your doctor
Stop all liquids six hours before your procedure
Wear comfortable clothing
Arrange a ride home — sedation means you can’t drive
