In February 2025, Meta launched its plans for Project Waterworth, a 50,000 km submarine cable project set to connect States including the US, India, Brazil, and South Africa. The project's announcement was specifically welcomed by US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a joint statement noting India's intention "to invest in maintenance, repair and financing of undersea cables in the Indian Ocean".
During 2024, Google announced expansions on its Pacific Connect submarine cable initiative, including the installation of the Bulikula and Halaihai cables connecting Guam with Fiji and French Polynesia respectively. The cables were praised by the then US Ambassador at Large for Cyberspace and Digital Policy as "a partnership that combines the considerable resources and expertise of the private sector with government support", and involves collaboration with Amalgamated Telecom Holdings, an umbrella telecoms business in which the Fijian Government maintains a significant stake.
