In 1970, Swiss watch designer Gérald Genta, known as the “Picasso of watchmaking”, put pen to paper, and emerging the next day with the original sketch for one of the most iconic watches of the world of horology: the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Since then, that overnight spark of creativity has continued to evolve, turning the Royal Oak into a cultural icon of the modern day.
To mark the 50 anniversary of the Royal Oak, Audemars Piguet invited five free-spirited movers and shakers in Hong Kong: rapper Matt Force, beatboxer HeartGrey, skateboarder Chun Chai, dancer Windy Hurricane, and graffiti artist XEME—to channel the youthful spirit of Royal Oak at Studio 50, where they had 50 seconds to perform to the fullest of their creative potential, with no set boundaries or restrictions.
Music can evoke powerful emotions and unite people like no other form of art. Over the years, Audemars Piguet has joined forces with rising music artists around the world, igniting creative growth from both sides in the process. Now, it’s time for Hong Kong’s hip-hop scene to shine as 28-year-old rapper Matt Force takes to Studio 50.
Representing a new generation of Hong Kong rap, Matt Force is instantly recognizable for his steady voice and a unique sound that samples from influences ranging from ‘90s hip-hop to jazz.
“Making music and practicing sports are the same to me. You have to do them repeatedly to make any improvement. This is the spirit of craftsmanship,” he says.
On stage, Matt Force’s lyrical beats are inspired by the Royal Oak’s forward-thinking and youthful spirit. On his wrist is the pink gold 39mm Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin contrasted with a smoked grey dial—a confident look that harks back to the icons of early hip-hop.
“Practicing beatbox requires a lot of patience. Only by relentlessly mastering the basics can these be combined into a complete performance.”
HeartGrey is Hong Kong's champion beatboxer, and the first ever beatboxer from China to be recognized by the international beatbox scene. “New audiences have different vibes. When you’re faced with changing expectations every time, that’s when you’re inspired to create something new,” he says.
For his performance at Studio 50, HeartGrey wears a 41mm Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph, featuring an 18-carat pink gold case and a khaki green Grande Tapisserie dial.
Throughout its watchmaking history, Audemars Piguet has challenged the status quo time and again with the intention of advancing watch design, in the process creating the timeless icon we know today.
Channeling the same energy is Hong Kong-born and raised skateboarder Chun Chai, who honed his skills on the streets of Sha Tin, and has represented Hong Kong in various Asian competitions.
His skate routine at Studio 50 allows the 39mm Royal Oak “Jumbo” Extra-Thin model to take center stage. Directly inspired by the original Royal Oak from 1972, this model features a stainless steel case and a dial colored in Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50. White gold applied hour-markers, Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating, and a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp complete this alluring reference.
“Street culture is never one-sided; skateboarding alone can be integrated into music, art, and fashion. Diversity is so important to sustaining the culture, because it’s this mixing of elements that leads to unexpected possibilities,” says Chun Chai.
As the founder of local dance studio THE HURRICANE, Windy Tsoi is driving a new understanding of urban dance in Hong Kong with her signature style that combines explosive moves with powerful rhythms. At Studio 50, Windy performs a dynamic dance routine with partner Jervin Racan, created in tribute to the youthful spirit of the Royal Oak Collection.
Windy wears the 37mm Royal Oak Selfwinding in stainless steel, featuring a grey dial with the Grande Tapisserie pattern, white gold applied hour-markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating. The bezel is inlaid with 40 brilliant-cut diamonds, allowing the light to dance and refract as Windy performs her routine. Her partner Jervin wears a 41mm Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph featuring a stainless steel case and black dial.
“My passion for dancing is what keeps me going. What supports this passion is the desire to express my energy and positivity through dancing,” says Windy.
The Royal Oak bears subtle signs of creative flair from the watchmaker’s hand throughout its design. The intricate movement is adorned with hand-finished details, while the same care has been applied to the case and bracelet in flourishes such as the alternation of satin-brushing and polished chamfers.
Inspired by the Royal Oak’s 50 Anniversary, graffiti artist XEME transformed the Studio 50 backdrop into a bold “RO50”graffiti piece. Serving as his inspiration is the 41mm Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph in stainless steel and a dial in a shade of Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50. Three tone-on-tone counters adorn the watch face.
“The best thing about graffiti is that there are no rules. This freedom makes the act of creation even more unrestricted—the beauty is that it’s full of possibilities,” he says.
50 years young today, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Collection has left its mark on each era that it has journeyed through. There’s little doubt that the iconic status of the Royal Oak will remain; such is its power in combining the realms of art, sport, innovation, and craftsmanship. Maybe the Royal Oak’s true power lies in its constant drive to reinvent itself—a facet that will remain crucial to its success over the next 50 years.
