For Spring/Summer 2024, Birkenstock releases a new three-part pack that brings its popular suede material back into the spotlight. Originally launched in the 1960s as a softer, more textured alternative to its signature polished leather, the tumbled fabric has since grown to be a mainstay of the brand alongside its trademark cork footbed. Its reintroduction this season sees the brand honoring the fabric’s ingrained qualities whilst visualizing how it can be reworked to suit modern trends.

At the center of the new release lands Birkenstock’s 1964-born Zürich sandal. The wrap-around silhouette comes upholstered in swathes of suede that stretches from the underlayer to the overlapping double straps, and to further emphasize the look, the material is paired with buckles in matching tones. Taking notes from the 2022 Ader Error collaboration, of which the Korean brand revamped four Birkenstock models, the new arrival sees the brand apply the same blueprint to the form-fitting Zürich. The most noticeable addition is the adjustable double buckle feature on top of the fine grained suede where the new fastening defines its new functional look as well as providing an adaptable fit. Developed in northern England, corduroy is often heralded as the “Manchester Cloth.” A rugged-yet-durable cotton, it was once the fabric of the metropolitan city where workers crafted swathes of the inexpensive material for the masses. In its latest release, Birkenstock brings corduroy into a new realm, reimagining the ribbed texture by embossing its signature suede leather in a cord-like style. Over the past few years, this classic Birkenstock clog has been propelled into streetwear stardom, finding a place in numerous wardrobes with its all-round functional design. Pairing a closed toe upper with a slip-on back, it provides the perfect combination of practicality and style. In the latest collection, this simple form canvases the new corduroy-inspired suede across its entirety. A soft leather strap ties the new material together with a silver buckle. From the sole to the upper, the clog comes dressed in a variety of bold colorways including Sienna Red and Purple Fog.
As the originator of the socks and sandals trend, Birkenstock’s Arizona is one model in the brand’s library that constantly births new styles in fashion. Similar to the Boston, it features slip-on functionality, securing the foot with two chunky straps. The latest adaptation finds the embossed suede upon the straps that is melded together with its signature cork sole to create a balanced look. Despite corduroy being often associated with durable winter garments, the new edition proves it can also be taken into summer through the brand’s most loved sandal silhouette.
Making its debut this year, the Naples showcases a new take on Birkenstock’s Buckley shoe. Combining its exposed toe box stitching with an integrated strap as well as other new elements, this silhouette revives the iconic model with details that are reminiscent of the old-fashioned moccasin slipper, the heritage-inspired corduroy make-up feels like a natural fit for the Naples. On the respective iteration, the embossed material features on the central panel with soft suede on the lateral sides and the focal strap. Not only enhancing its existing features, the transformation gives the model a more luxury feel.

Similar to the Naples, the Kyoto sandal draws inspiration from another one of Birkenstock’s classic shoes: the Zürich. Featuring a wrap-around upper that is tied together with a single strap, it brings a contemporary spin to its sandal construction. Keeping the sleek and understated look of the model, the new corduroy-inspired iteration places the ridged texture on the bottom layer of the upper while the top strap adopts a soft suede, decorated with an embossed brand logo.
