Sandrine Charles On Breaking Barriers in the Fashion Industry as a Publicist
Multidimensional public relations connoisseur Sandrine Charles is no stranger to challenging the status quo. The self-made entrepreneur broke free of traditional norms when she pivoted from a law degree to pursue a career as a fashion publicist. She has marched to the beat of her own drum since her first foray into fashion and has since broken down barriers as one of few Black women in the field. With years of experience under her belt, Charles took a leap of faith in 2016 to launch her own communications and consulting firm, Sandrine Charles Consulting.
By leveraging her carefully crafted network and dynamic skill-set, she has solidified her rising agency as the standard within public relations. Her years of interning at in-house agencies and cultivating relationships with brands as well as former colleagues has solidified her place within the industry, making her a force to be reckoned with in the industry. She’s not only paved the way for herself — devising fresh and inventive strategies for brands like Daily Paper and Kith — but also for fellow people of color who face the daunting reality of the fashion industry like she did. With her organization, Black in Fashion Council, Charles is not only expanding beyond her public relations firm, but addressing and combating systemic issues rooted in the industry.
As part of the sixth installment of The Creative Come Up in partnership with Converse, Charles revealed three vital lessons for aspiring publicists hoping to establish themselves in their respective industries and branch out on their own. As a multi-faceted entrepreneur who emphasizes the importance of a high work ethic, Charles advises emerging creatives to seize every opportunity, nurture their professional relationships and be fearless in the pursuit of their dreams.
