Though he may be an entitled young club owner hellbent on destroying the human race, you can’t deny Deacon Frost’s irritatingly effortless cool factor. Sure, blood-sucking douchebags in pricy button-down shirts with God-like complexes draw a sharp comparison to the kind of guys you’d spot hanging out in the Meatpacking District on a Friday night, but at least Frost actually pursues his ambitions for world domination as opposed to just rambling about them after a few too many libations.

We’ve all made questionable style choices during our teen years, but no matter what cringeworthy sartorial risks you might’ve taken, I highly doubt any of them fare against Alex DeLarge’s. A bowler hat, protective groin cup and suspenders? It’s a good thing homie was an unhinged, ultra-violent sociopath, otherwise he wouldn’t have stood a chance against any high school bully (though let’s be real – he was the bully).

Vampires are dope by default, but dress one in a look harking back to the glory days of ’80s goth, and you’ve got yourself a bonafide fashion legend. The leader of a bloodthirsty biker gang, David’s bleached platinum mullet, leather duster coat, combat boots, black leather gloves and solo dangling earring attest a predator that is as aggressive as he is fashion-forward.

As if being a sinister urban legend with a hook for a hand and the ability to endure a mouth full of bees wasn’t enough, Candyman’s savagery was only heightened by his fondness for statement outerwear and late 19th century threads. I mean, not everyone can pull off a floor-length shearling coat, so the fact that Candyman can do so and still retain his fearful reputation speaks measures – if even it does look a bit extra.

The primary antagonist in The Matrix franchise (not technically a horror film in the traditional sense, but Reality is terrifying), Agent Smith’s icy demeanor and hyper-agility make him one the film’s most intimidating characters. Completely void of emotion, Smith’s signature clean-cut corporate attire and futuristic sunglasses only boost his seamless swag, positioning him as the prominent style catalyst behind fashion’s recent obsession with “business casual chic” (popularized by labels such as Balenciaga, Vetements, Gosha Rubchinskiy and MISBHV).

As most horror film aficionados know, it wasn’t until the third installment of Friday the 13th‘s franchise that lead villain Jason Voorhees would appear in his trademark hockey goalie mask and accompanying denim/work shirt ensemble. Though Jason’s fit would alter slightly throughout the series, his taste for utilitarian garms remained consistent.

A man of few (if any) words, Michael Myers wasn’t one for trend mimicry nor peacocking. Clad in a simple navy boiler suit and a pair of black oxford shoes, the silent but deadly stalker was an early high-profile admirer of workwear chic, asserting that he was, in fact, ahead of the style bandwagon. Who knows – maybe Captain Kirk masks will be all the rage next season.

Everyone’s favorite foul-mouthed, supernatural serial killer accomplished what many considered an impossible style feat – he made your grandma’s ugly knitted Christmas sweater look hard AF. Keeping very on trend with a pair of heritage work boots and carpenter pants, Freddy’s iconic bladed leather glove proved that he was also a purveyor of statement accessories. We’ll forgive him for that fedora though; even the highest members of the slasher killer echelon commit fashion felonies from time to time.

Leader of the Cenobites – a group of disfigured demons who reside in a hellish extra-dimensional realm – Pinhead’s look, according to the film’s director Clive Barker, took design cues from goth/punk fashion, African fetish sculptures, traditional Catholic clergy gowns and, of course, BDSM. Aside from the dozens of nails protruding from his cranium, Pinhead’s all-black, fetishistic patent leather getup isn’t too far from what’s frequently nodded in runway presentations from fashion goth gawds like Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto and the late Alexander McQueen.

A forerunner to the jawn-loving Internet dwellers behind #menswear, no stylish movie villains listicle would be complete without mention of Patrick Bateman. The Wall Street yuppie’s uncontrollable bloodlust was only matched by his penchant for tailored Valentino suits, Oliver Peoples glasses, overpriced skincare products and Jean-Paul Gaultier leather goods, making him an archetype of the ’80s New York City finance bro. Bateman’s overt materialism and self-obsessed tendencies still resonate with many societal issues that plague modern youth culture – minus the base appetite for calculated carnage, of course.
Everyone loves a good villain. Whether it’s their seductively sinister allure, unhinged personal agendas or complex psychological makeup, the bad guy’s ability to entertain and fascinate – particularly in cinema – has remained uniform for years. After all, there’s only so many morally justified good deeds one can watch before treading on the edges of boredom (not sure what that says about a human’s primal appetite for amusement).
The horror genre is bolstered by villains, and the last few decades have spawned some of the most iconic antiheroes ever to grace the silver screen. Of course, each villain possesses their own personal brand of treachery – intellectual manipulation, larceny, mass murder, etc – that contributes to their abiding legacy in pop culture, but some have garnered considerable praise for their memorable sartorial choices – so much so, in fact, that they’ve been pinned as muses for some of the world’s most illustrious designers.
In celebration of Halloween, here are 10 of the most fashionable villains in horror movie history; find out how their style fares against contemporary designer trends.
