HYPEBEAST x Timex M79 "Fuchsia" Automatic Watch
The latest collaboration from HYPEBEAST — and first official watch release — is a vintage-inspired version of Timex’s workhorse M79 watch. In keeping with the watch’s intended use as a tool watch for everyday wear, many of the watch’s signature features were kept intact while minor tweaks were added for long-lasting enjoyment. Designed for a wide range of watch enthusiasts, from those just starting their watch collection to the seasoned collector, this reliable timepiece is ready to accompany you on your next adventure.
A Nod to the Past
A Nod to the Past
The Timex M79 is the mechanical successor of the Timex Q (re-issued in 2019), where “M” represents “Mechanical” and “79” the year of the Q’s release. The reason for the re-issue was simply to educate a new generation of consumers on Timex’s rich history, years before the successful Timex Ironman series of digital watches. An American watch that was born out of the quartz crisis, priced far lower than its Swiss counterparts but equally as handsome, the M79 tells of the tenacity of Timex in surviving the paradigm shift of the watch industry during the ’70s – ’80s. It’s a full circle — 167-years of Timex, from mechanical to quartz, now back to mechanical, but this time on their own terms.
Not only are the color combinations from HYPEBEAST’s M79 a play on one of the more interesting variations of the ref. 1675, but it was also a chance to maintain the ongoing theme of incorporating navy into our collaborative releases. This color pays respect to the obscurities found in the world of vintage watches. While undesirable to many, things like tropical dials and faded “ghost” bezel inserts are a rare sight. These “happy accidents” from the ‘50s - ‘70s occurred when certain -- now considered defective -- paints were used which resulted in a number of imperfections when exposed to UV light from the sun over a long period of time. The pink hue in this watch mimics a bold red that has been subjected to years of sunlight resulting in a washed fuchsia color. Arriving in 40mm the M79 is powered by a 21-jewel Miyota automatic movement, a unidirectional bezel, has a day/date function, a domed acrylic glass, and is good up to 50 meters underwater. In order to give the watch some distinction, a few key features were added.

Moving away from the customary lume plots, a simple “6,” “9,” and “12” was used to give more attention to the navy dial and the contrast from the co-branding. At the three o’clock position lays the day/date indicator where the English/French date wheel has been swapped for a Chinese/English date version — this sheds light on some of the more interesting finds that are appearing at auctions houses.
A Minimal Dial With a Chinese Date Wheel
To make sure this watch sees more wrist time, a sportier stainless steel H-link bracelet was used in place of the original woven mesh bracelet. This versatile bracelet is more breathable on the wrist due to its link spacing and offers more of a sporty aesthetic to the overall watch. The co-branded bracelets are polished to blend with the case where at the back of the case you will find each watch individually numbered out of 500.
