For hip-hop and R&B duo Manila Grey, Vancouver is more than just their hometown. Formed by childhood friends and first-generation Filipino immigrants Soliven and Neeko, the city plays a key role in the group's music and their identity. In fact, even their name and album titles are inspired by Vancouver. "It’s where we create, it’s home," says Neeko. Their latest release, No Saints on Knight Street, references a Vancouver roadway with a historic Filipino community, and the city bleeds into their moniker as well. "Soliven, Zelly and I have been making music for a minute, and the feeling of creating while it’s cold and gloomy brings out the sauce," says Neeko. "The grey is where the ‘night rider’ sound was born. It’s where songs like, ‘Timezones,’ ‘Knight Street,’ ‘Speed Speak,’ and ‘Eastbound,’ to name a few, get created." Their obvious commitment to excellence is a force they share with Patrón, which uses traditional and handmade processes to create premium tequila that’s made with only the highest quality ingredients, and free of any additives. Since their first release in 2016, Manila Grey has received critical acclaim and massive radio play in both Vancouver and Manila — a testament to their steadfast dedication to their craft. Driven by a passion to master their sound and bring their work to a global audience, both members of Manila Grey left their jobs cutting hair before committing to music full time. "It was a way for us to hustle while being close to the community and being able to make music at the same time," says Soliven. "It’s a tight knit community and there’s a lot of different cultures. The car scene is dope, the food is amazing, the people are friendly and the city is just so dynamic. You got the cityscapes, mountains, forests, and so many other environments, it’s incredible." With an unmatched confidence that has allowed them to pave their own paths and a deep love for their city, HYPEBEAST and Patrón asked Manila Grey to share their favorite spots in Vancouver.

Before hitting the studio, snacks are "a must." Manila Grey's go-to snack at Dank Mart is a "half pound bag of The Snackie Chan Tasty Buds. No competition." Once they get to the studio, Soliven says "We can cook up at an afterparty but we can also go get geeky on some deep cut sessions and get into the technicals of the sonics - I think we prefer the quiet nights more, on our ninja shit. Regardless, we tap in."

booster boxes Vancity Pokémon sells. One that stands out is the Blaziken VMAX alternative art from the most recent Pokémon set ‘Chilling Reign,’ which goes for about $180-$200 USD for the single card. Honestly, investing into Pokémon has been a fun journey. It takes me back to my childhood and you can make some good paper."

“For drinks, we usually rock with the Lucid Dream with
Patrón, and for food, you gotta try their citrus olives, the dumplings and the brisket bao. It’s a dope spot to pre-game. Before the lockdown, we’d pull up here to eat and sip a bit. Ideal night out would be to grab some drinks, pull up to an underground party or pop-up and hit a studio after.”

SM: “When I was 19, one of my best friends, Cole Torode, was planning to open a coffee shop. He's been the Canadian National Barista Champion 2018, 2019 and Top 5 in the world both of those years. It was cool to see how Rosso Coffee Roasters grew into a big operation. They have a sick pour over — it's a rotating exotic or competition coffee, always a unique flavour experience.”
SM: “Whenever I go back to Calgary, I make a reservation at Native Tongues. It's always tasty. I get the guacamole, carnitas, pork belly pibil and hongos (mushroom tacos) and the Patrón margarita. I get all the salsa so you can top the tacos yourself — lots of salsa options. I’m a big sauce guy. Hits every time. The servers are very friendly and chill."

As the chef and owner of ēst Restaurant and Biga Pie, Calgary native Sean MacDonald has mastered the art of cooking for his community. With deep roots in the city and a strong selection of local restaurants that he's trained at, MacDonald has gone on to receive culinary accolades, including being selected as one of 16 Rising Talents for North America by The Art of Plating and the only Canadian chef on the list for The Best Chef Awards in 2018. Living in Calgary for over 25 years, the city isn’t just where he started his career, but also where he realized he wanted to master his passion for cooking. "My mom, who still lives in Calgary, was a big inspiration for my creativity with food and plating,” he says. “She was an artist so I grew up sitting on the floor drawing and colouring while she painted." MacDonald's pursuit of culinary experiences brought him across Europe, learning and competing in competitions, before ending up in Toronto to work at his first restaurant. No matter where he is in the world, the chef furthers his prowess for creating high-quality culinary experiences — something he shares with Patrón, which couples a dedication to its craft with a commitment to excellence when making premium tequila. While Macdonald currently lives in Toronto, he's still drawn to the "chill energy" and "the summer nights in Calgary, when the sun is starting to set and you’re out grilling something on the BBQ with friends and family." He remains tapped in by frequent visits and keeping in touch with his equally talented friends. "One of my best friends, Alex Edmonson, is a private chef who still lives there,” he says. “We grew a lot as chefs together — lots of experimenting and coming up with dishes. We always pushed each other to be the best we could." Pursuing excellence through new foods and flavors has influenced the restaurants the chef has brought to his city. With his level of expertise, HYPEBEAST and Patrón asked Sean MacDonald to share his favorite spots in Calgary.

As an anchor for Canada’s leading sports network, Kayla Grey is more than just a familiar face to those in her city — she’s also a perennial explorer of her hometown of Toronto. Though she has lived in the city her entire life, there’s no shortage of new spots to discover. Being part of historic moments in Toronto, like when she skillfully reported the 2019 Raptors NBA Championship, keeps her even more firmly rooted in the city. “Local sports fans here are wildin',” says Grey. “I've got to say, they truly are some of the best in the world, and it's no longer a secret.” With diehard basketball fans and a strong soccer community, navigating the news in Toronto requires an approach that masterfully balances her love for sports with the craft of anchoring, not unlike how Patrón combines passion with a dedication to its handmade process in creating its premium tequila. In the same way she unveils the fandom of the city, Grey is also revealing her favorite spots in her native city. “Toronto loves a good ‘If you know you know’ moment,” says Grey. The city’s diverse offerings in sports, food and shopping doesn’t require you to be native to participate, but the key to exploring Toronto is maintaining a bona fide sense of curiosity. “I think this energy is what preserves our authenticity,” she says. As she continues to report on the latest and greatest news in Toronto, discover the spots that Kayla has shared with HYPEBEAST and Patrón.
