After visiting Neymar Jr’s new base in Saudi Arabia, Hypebeast travels to Ibiza to go behind the scenes of renowned Dutch DJ/producer Martin Garrix.
Celebrating the legacy of the iconic 9zero1 denim, “Home Away From Home” explores the abstract concept of home through the lens of globetrotters who take their home comforts wherever they go.
Launched in the 1990s as a wardrobe essential built to elevate everyday looks, the 9zero1 line is an ode to relaxed-fit vintage silhouettes. Given its timeless design and cross-generational success, the label has rarely made any changes to the collection’s craftsmanship.
Having united with a range of talented individuals who embrace the brand’s forward-thinking ethos, Replay has also partnered with ambassadors like Garrix for a collaborative T-shirt capsule collection, inspired by the visual elements of his live shows, that brings together their design languages.
Chapter 2
Martin garrix
Garrix himself is an enigma. By 16 years old, he was already touring, signed to a major label, and was playing the same stages as some of the most established DJs. Describing his sonic style as “energetic, euphoric, uplifting and emotional,” bringing people together is what he aims to do with his art. “Some of my songs don't even have lyrics or vocals,” he explains. “To be able to travel the world and see people resonate with the songs – it's a very surreal feeling.”
Gaining an interest in electronic music at eight years old, he tried his hand at production and DJing in his bedroom before getting his first bookings at weddings, school parties, and local shows. Even still, the venue didn’t matter to Garrix who was “just really enjoying the moment,” and one thing he holds to high importance, regardless of how popular he gets, “is to always keep that joy, no matter what skill or what size the show is.” Remaining a student of the art, continuing to learn new techniques, researching new sounds, and perfecting his craft all play a major factor in his career growth.
“I think people underestimate how much the people on stage actually notice the crowd. We're at a spot where you can see almost everybody,” Garrix says on recognizing familiar faces in the crowd during performances. Whether it's the local circuit or sold-out festivals, he forges a unique connection with the audience, however, he doesn’t see it as an artist-fan relationship, but “more like a family that’s all partying together.”
Ibiza is where Garrix held his first-ever international show, and with a weekly residency at the iconic Ushuaïa, he’s made the island his home away from home. By turning this Thursday night headline into a “testing ground,” it has given him the opportunity to trial new mixes and sense-check the crowd’s response for future sets.
From its rich history in the music scene and the scenic landscapes to bringing his family and friends over during the summer months, or attending shows of other DJs in the area — he’s become well acclimatized to his second home.
While Ibiza boasts the best of both worlds — mountains fit for hiking in the daytime and parties that go well into the night — in Amsterdam, there’s also “the relaxing side and the crazy party side” and it’s finding this atmospheric balance where he thrives.
As someone who lives and breathes music, the favorite area in his Amsterdam abode “is definitely the studio. It sounds very predictable, but whenever I'm [there], I can really experiment.” While he loves getting in his boat to travel down the canals and enjoy the city, it’s his sound system that gets his first attention when he returns home. “I almost go [to it] straight away when I'm back in Amsterdam. Listen to [tracks] on my own system to double-check everything, make tweaks, and improve the song,” he explains.
There’s no denying that Garrix’s shows are highly coveted. With a jam-packed touring schedule that has taken him from Ibiza to Sweden to Croatia, and back to Ibiza where we’re currently speaking, before heading to Las Vegas — using his days off to rest is key to the DJ. “Whenever I can rest, I actually decompress, rest, recharge, and then I can deliver at the shows,” he explains. At the time of shooting, he had just returned from Tenerife, an island off Spain, where he used his rest days between shows to windsurf — an activity he likens to performing. “It's similar to the feeling of being on stage because it's adrenaline. It’s joy,” he says. “You don't think about anything else and you're in the moment. For me, that's the perfect way to reset.”
Achieving global stardom at such a young age turned Garrix into a traveling veteran. An adolescent dream, his teenage years were occupied with visiting the world, now in his 20s, he’s learned to cherish the time he gets to spend with his family when in Amsterdam.
His team — an extended family in some ways — are who make a Garrix show special. From the lasers to pyrotechnics, executing the visual spectacle at every show is a group effort. Having worked with some of the members for over a decade, they’ve formed an unbreakable bond. “When you travel so many places, you're far from home so you get real close because they also leave their families behind, too.” As well as traveling, it’s the energy that’s most rewarding of the experience. And whether it’s toasting to celebrate a good show or regrouping and watching footage to see where improvements can be made, they’re all in it together to achieve greatness.
Whether it’s fashion or music, collaboration is what keeps any art alive. “I want to branch out in uncharted territory,” he says of continual learning and never staying content. “I want to collaborate with people that bring me out of my comfort zone. That's where you get the most exciting results.” Having joined the Replay team two years ago, Garrix debuted his fashion venture with an exclusive collaborative range earlier this year. Growing up with Replay denim and admiring its craftsmanship, the partnership itself was a full-circle moment for the DJ, and the 9zero1 “brings back the OG fit. So having that in the limelight again is exciting.”
Viewing the step-by-step process of designing clothes in a similar vein to creating music, he explains that it “starts with a rough sketch, then you start fine-tuning. And that's exactly how it happened with Replay.” For him, regardless of creative outlet, the result is always about evoking a feeling.
Fusing both entities' unique identities was essential for both Garrix and Replay. After the brand’s lead designer arrived at the DJ’s house for what he thought was a meeting, she asked to spend some time inspecting his wardrobe which he cites as being the most memorable part of the partnership. “I realized she took photos of everything, and she wanted to make a collection that I would also add as my identity,” Garrix recalls. “Doing the research on my style and incorporating my identity in the collaboration was really cool. I'm super happy with how the collection turned out.”
To be able to travel the world and see people resonate with the songs – it's a very surreal feeling.

“A pair of jeans in your wardrobe just gives you extra confidence [...] I'd describe [my style] as very laid-back. Nothing too formal. I enjoy feeling at ease.”
“Family is very important. It helps you through everything – to live, to achieve your goals, and everything else.”
