The textile studio uses innovative technology like the Samsung Galaxy Fold to create change in the industry.
Borre Akkersdijk is already pushing the boundaries of the textile industry through his Amsterdam-based studio BYBORRE, but the designer and entrepreneur is showing no signs of slowing down. While he and the brand’s team of experts across material, technology and design constantly have their eyes on the future, they’ve already implemented process that alters the way textiles are made — and for the better. Up next for BYBORRE: expanding that vision to create even more widespread change. Working at a breakneck pace in the name of innovation, Akkersdijk surrounds himself with tools, such as the Samsung Galaxy Fold, that are as ambitious as him. Akkersdijk shares his plans for the future for the third and final part of a series with Samsung and BYBORRE that explores the intersection of fashion and technology.
According to Akkersdijk, technology — specifically 3D design — is the best way to continue on his mission of creating a less wasteful textile industry. “Tech plays a very big role in what’s going to happen in fashion in the coming years,” he explains. “You see people now trying to 3D develop clothing first before designing it to make it.” This, in turn, eliminates a need to make sample after sample, saving fabric and material waste. Since much of the design process is digital and requires advanced multi-tasking, Akkersdijk uses hyper functional tools like the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The device allows him to see the process through, from ideation to execution, on one device while also providing the ability to concurrently engineer designs with all teams. “Looking at the Samsung Galaxy Fold, all creators are able to bring the full supply chain directly at their fingertips,” Akkersdijk says.
By changing perceptions, Akkersdijk hopes to change the way the next generation views fashion and clothing. “We’re starting to realize now that by buying something and wearing it once, not only do you waste something and waste money, but it has an impact on how we perceive things. You don’t take value for it,” he says. “And we have a new generation that we can help to change that.” Inside BYBORRE’s studio, the team is the embodiment of this new mindset — it even comes through in how they work. The collective is constantly collaborating and sharing ideas for moving the needle. It’s a multi-tasking environment that requires a phone that’s just as nimble, like the Fold which allows users to operate multiple apps at once. As a team, this makes for a frictionless mobile experience to focus on what’s next. “It’s such an exciting time because there’s so much happening in the world,” says Akkersdijk. “I hope in ten years [the textile industry] is going to evolve and it’s going to be something new.” BYBORRE will certainly play a big role in making that happen.

Pulling back the curtain on the Amsterdam-based design studio.
Textiles are ubiquitous in our day to day lives, but few people are making strides in mastering how we manufacture fabrics for modern times. BYBORRE founder Borre Akkersdijk is the exception, having leveraged his vision and forward-thinking approach to develop a tried-and-true process that completely edits a part of the fashion supply chain. An innovator in his own right, Akkersdijk relies on technology — from the machines that weave his knits to his Samsung Galaxy Fold which keeps his operation on track — to turn his ideas into reality. Samsung and BYBORRE have teamed up to highlight the intersection of fashion and technology in a three part mini documentary that pulls back the curtain on his game-changing perspective and practice.
A behind-the-scenes look inside BYBORRE’s Amsterdam studio shows how a collective of forward-thinking minds come together to move the needle in fashion. The company does away with outdated textile manufacturing processes, which pay little attention to sustainability and functionality, to create entirely new, intentionally-designed fabrics. “I have to make sure that my vision is transportable and shareable,” says Akkersdijk. For that, he relies on the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which is designed to effortlessly fit into a creative entrepreneur’s reality, from its convenient cover screen that provides easy access to phone and messages without weighing the user down, to its 7.3 inch unfolded display that vibrantly puts his technicolor fabrics on view.
BYBORRE is starting at the very beginning of production to create textiles that consider how clothing is designed and how it’s worn. Through dialogue and understanding the needs that the fabric will fulfill, BYBORRE’s team of experts across material, manufacturing, technology and design can put their heads together to ideate a completely new design language. From beginning to end, each step requires collaboration and the Fold’s professional grade camera gives Akkersdijk the ability to capture high quality photos of his intricate materials to get buy in from stakeholders in and out of the studio. “The moment that you grab that piece and you see that the team made it work and did things I could not even imagine, it’s a joy moment for me,” says Akkersdijk. “We created something that we can now give to the world.”

The Samsung Galaxy Fold helps him push the boundaries.
The term innovation is frequently thrown around in the fashion industry, but few brands actually embody its true meaning. BYBORRE, the Amsterdam-based textile studio led by founder Borre Akkersdijk, is one of the rare imprints that does. The company is meaningfully pushing the boundaries of knitwear and materiality, turning an antiquated segment of the fashion industry on its head through research and development. In the same vein, the Samsung Galaxy Fold allows for a frictionless creative environment for the designer, helping him to set the standard amongst his peers. Samsung and BYBORRE have teamed up to highlight the intersection of fashion and technology in a three part mini documentary that pulls back the curtain on his game-changing perspective and practice.
BYBORRE was born out of Akkersdijk’s desire to make textile production better functioning and more sustainable. “I saw loads of things that I wanted to make better and to push the innovation of textile,” he says. Years of development and a tech-forward approach led to a process that starts at the yarn to create functional fabrics on a circular knitting machine, allowing for freedom with color, pattern and texture. The technique and resulting fabrics caught the attention of global brands: Since the company’s founding in 2010, it has built up a client list that most would dream of. A roster of international partners requires seamless communication, something that Akkersdijk has mastered with the Fold. The device’s Pro Grade Camera captures the details and nuances of his technical fabrics, allowing him to efficiently collaborate across borders.
BYBORRE’s in-house label, which taps into Akkersdijk’s education in fashion design to create stylish experimental garments, has also gained major traction, being sold at top retailers like Dover Street Market Ginza, Moda Operandi and Browns. The label’s design ethos lies in turning the 3D textiles into futuristic silhouettes and functional sportswear, while still maintaining a zero waste approach. Collectively, it means that Akkersdijk must run a nimble operation, powered by his ability to multi-task — an undertaking that the Fold caters to. The hinged phone allows the user to work across three applications at once, but is also convenient to use with one hand while folded, offering unmatched versatility for creatives like Akkersdijk who operate at a breakneck pace. “If you’re always playing and pushing the boundaries, cutting edge and innovation will come,” says Akkersdijk. For him, the sentiment rings true in both fashion and mobile experience.
