Collaboration is at the core of streetwear culture. It lends a different perspective to the passion points we gravitate towards, while simultaneously providing an entry point for discovering a something or someone new. While on the surface it may appear that a successful partnership hinges on the type of frenetic fanfare that leads to sellout, the truth is that it’s creativity and an the authentic mashup of different visions and areas of expertise that drive the model forward. Even better, technology has fueled the globalization of fashion, allowing creative counterparts to work together without borders. Cutting-edge devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G on Verizon have helped to drive these boundary-pushing projects. Behind the Collab:
With an impressive resume that includes designing footwear for Yeezy, Cole Haan and Versace, where he currently serves as Vice President of Sneakers and Men’s Footwear, designer Salehe Bembury launched his very first collaborative silhouette earlier this year. For the New York native who now resides in Los Angeles, designing the New Balance 2002R was a personal project, injecting his love of nature into the design. While this point of inspiration and the daily hiking ritual that informed it offer a meditative practice for Bembury, the process of bringing his vision to life required the intervention of technology like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G on Verizon to help with efficiency, speed and connectivity.
As with many collaborative projects, creating the Salehe Bembury x New Balance 2002R required a series of decisions made by multiple stakeholders. According to Bembury, being in constant communication is key, especially in the early days of a project. The Galaxy Z Fold2 5G made communication seamless, with impressive download and upload speeds, and five cameras to capture everything and share important milestones on the fly.
While solidifying a design direction provides the foundation for creating a collaborative offering, the journey had only just begun. According to Bembury, the actual process of bringing the final product to fruition — from naming the style to revising different iterations of the shoe to designing the packaging — requires constant multi-tasking. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G on Verizon matches the breakneck speed at which creatives share ideas, allowing the use of up to three compatible apps at once thanks to its Multi-Active Window. The phone’s Hideaway Hinge transforms the 6.2-inch smartphone into a tablet with 7.6-inch foldable display, allowing designers the screen size to make adjustments on the go and hone in on the details they cares most about.
In the end, the Salehe Bembury x New Balance 2002R was well-received when it released last month, not only selling out, but also marking the beginning of a new chapter for Salehe. Identifying an organic common denominator between two brands yields the most successful collaborations. For Brain Dead cofounder Kyle Ng, he didn’t have to look far to find this shared ground with The North Face to create a limited-edition collection for Fall/Winter 2020. Ng hails from the Berkeley, California area where The North Face was founded. Providing even more synergy, neither of the two entities is afraid to break the rules, allowing their collaboration to expand outside of the confines of the status quo. “Early North Face represents this vision of freedom that was about being rebellious,” says Ng. “Brain Dead shares that similar DNA.” From ideation and concepting to tackling the challenges of working in different cities from Brain Dead cofounder Ed Davis and the hinderances of COVID-19 surrounding the collection’s launch, Ng tells the story of Brain Dead x The North Face on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G on Verizon.
With Berkeley as the starting point, Ng and Davis took a dive into The North Face archives to discover what the city in the 1970s was all about, honing in on a vintage brown label from the brand. “My partner Ed Davis and I are rarely in the same place,” says Ng of the process. “We’ve been running Brain Dead for five years via cell phones, text messaging and emails. The way we communicated on this project was like that.” Though operating out of different cities from each other and from The North Face, Brain Dead’s inspiration expanded, branching off into references like early climbing, psychedelic architecture movements, commune lifestyles and vintage sourced from Japan. “We had this dialogue of communication that was like puzzle pieces to create the final picture,” he says. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 5G on Verizon is a creative tool that helps put those pieces together, working as both a phone and a tablet thanks to its hinged design, providing an on-the-go workspace that caters to multitaskers.
As with many projects that launched this year, COVID-19 forced Ng and his team to pivot when it came to the collaboration’s release. “When COVID hit, we couldn’t really tell the story of this collection because we couldn’t really go anywhere.” Instead, the team decided to take the marketing budget and put it towards All Rise, Ng’s non-profit that introduces underserved communities to climbing — a sport that taps into both the collection’s aesthetic and the designer’s own pastime. Despite the about face, the Brain Dead and The North Face teams were able to provide a bit of sartorial escapism through this collection, thanks to constant and reliable connectivity, like that provided by the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2. “Deep down my methodology is: let’s make something pure that has a great story,” says Ng. “Some people will get it and some people won’t, but seeing kids actually use the chalk bags and actually use the shorts is the best feeling.”
