Talks Sweat, Grit and His Journey to Persevere
The Boston Celtics’ Reigning Defensive Player of the Year embodies the makings of a champion.
Boston Celtics’ Marcus Smart has had quite the year. As Tres Generaciones’ latest ambassador, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year is among the few modern-day trailblazers recognized by the label’s ‘Get Up Tres’ campaign, which champions individuals who’ve triumphed over setbacks and losses in their careers. Smart’s grit and determination, highlighted by the campaign, is also a reflection of the label’s three generations of Dons. Tres Gen’s work with Marcus Smart is chronicled in a three-part video series titled “The Formula,” spotlighting Smart’s pointers for success: Perseverance, Creativity and Purpose. In Chapter One, Smart details how he leverages losses to propel himself forward, buckling down on his responsibilities as a teammate and leader ahead of the Boston Celtics’ first game of the season against the Philadelphia 76ers on October 18.
“So even though it was a brutal loss for us, there were definitely lessons to be learned, and we take and accept the whole journey.”
Marcus Smart was a driving force in the Celtic’s Cinderella season, guiding the team as it bounced back from a terrible start (19 wins and 21 losses in early January). He shocked the world with statement wins over top contenders in the playoffs (Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat). The 2021-2022 NBA Championship saw the Boston Celtics go head-to-head against the Golden State Warriors in a nail-biting battle. In Game 6 at the TD Garden, the Golden State Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics (103-90), securing the team’s fourth title in the last eight seasons and the franchise’s seventh title overall.
“That last game was brutal,” the 28-year-old star reflects. “It was like a nightmare, except in the nightmare, you can feel everything — everything’s real. We have to sit there and pretty much watch somebody else celebrate on our court. It was tough. It was very brutal for us. We cried, obviously; we were very emotional, but it’s part of it. It’s part of life. We have an opportunity to start all over and figure out how to get back to that situation and figure out — if we do make it back — what things we need to tweak to triumph and be a champion. So even though it was a brutal loss for us, there were definitely lessons to be learned, and we take and accept the whole journey.”
He was later assigned to the Maine Red Claws, the Celtic’s NBA Development Team, where he clawed his way back, only to face another injury – this time dislocating two fingers on his shooting hand during the 2015 Las Vegas Summer League. As he started to find his rhythm in 2018, he cut his right hand in a freak accident, resulting in 11 missed games, and soon after, tearing a ligament in the same hand in March at the end of his season. The laceration could’ve been a career-ending injury, and even today, Smart claims to experience prolonged numbness from the nerve damage. Sacrifices on and off the court have come at the expense of Smart’s body and mental health; his evolution as an athlete is a testament to the years spent honing his skillset, and his ability to pick himself up, dust off and face his opponents head-on.
With Udoka swiped from the sidelines and assistant Joe Mazzulla succeeding as interim head coach, the Boston Celtics face their biggest challenge yet. Though daunting for some, Smart has experienced losses far greater than the championship. The death of his mother and brother are wounds that likely run deeper than stats and celebrity, and Smart admittedly took time away from the court to heal and process these losses. The man who emerged from the pain was a player who would put his body on the line each and every day, unafraid of the blood, sweat and tears required to win. As such, Tres Gen raises a toast in commemoration of the athlete’s unwavering fortitude and evolution as a professional basketball player.
Weeks before Boston Celtics’ first game of the season, coach Ime Udoka received an indefinite leave from the franchise.
“Perseverance means to me as an athlete, never quitting, no matter what,” expresses Smart. “We get knocked down all the time as athletes. We pick ourselves back up. No matter how hard you get knocked down, you keep getting up. The moment you stop getting up is the moment that you actually lose.” The Boston Celtics may have not walked away with championship rings, but Smart’s fighting spirit rallies fans to gather in the trenches in spirit for the journey ahead. “My mindset and sentiments are really simple,” he says. “Control what you can control. What we can control is how we come in every day, how we prepare, how professional we are, and how to get ready. We can’t look back to the past. It’s not gonna change anything and it’s not gonna help us. We take it; we learn from the past. Once you do that, you move on; you leave it there. This season is a new season and everybody’s starting at zero, so [there are] no excuses. We all have the same equal opportunity to do something special and reach our goal.”

It’s far from the first setback in Smart’s early NBA career. In his fifth NBA game, Smart sprained his left ankle and was ruled out for nearly three weeks.
