Climate change poses unprecedented challenges to the world’s food systems. Rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events threaten agricultural production and the biodiversity and ecosystem services that underpin agriculture. Climate change also affects processing, storage, transport, and retailing of food. These growing climate risks impact food security, nutrition, and human health, as well as equity and livelihoods, with poor food producers and consumers, as well as vulnerable populations including women, hit hardest. At the same time, food systems in their current state are failing to provide healthy diets for all and are estimated to generate one-third of human-caused greenhouse gases.
To address these challenges, climate change adaption and resilience-building for food systems must be accelerated to ensure all people can access healthy diets and sustainable livelihoods. At the same time, efforts to transform food systems must reduce their environmental footprint. IFPRI’s experts work with partners around the world to identify, assess, and improve policy, institutional, and governance solutions from the local to the global level.
In the run up to this year’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates, we are spotlighting some of the key IFPRI and CGIAR research and insights on approaching the complex threat posed by climate change in a holistic way.
