A gender-balanced approach to agricultural development that creates more opportunities for women is essential to building household wealth, improving child health, and creating prosperous rural communities.
WOMEN FARM, WORK, AND RAISE FAMILIES IN RURAL SOCIETIES, BUT OFTEN THEY DON’T HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE DECISIONS THAT AFFECT THEIR HOUSEHOLDS. Women are usually last in line for access to agricultural extension, inputs, fertile land, and even food. Empowering women leads to better nourished and more resilient families. Better educated and nourished girls become healthy, empowered mothers—and with that comes a fighting chance to break the cycle of poverty. But how best can women be empowered?

With the right mix of political commitment, investments, and innovation, we are confident that agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia can fulfill its potential to transform the lives of millions of smallholder farmers and the economies of the countries in which they live.
IN MANY COUNTRIES, MOST OF THE POPULATION IS ENGAGED IN AGRICULTURE. SMALLHOLDER FARMERS, IN PARTICULAR, STRUGGLE TO EKE OUT A LIVING. Governments now recognize that barriers that impede smallholder productivity and profitability must be lowered if these famers and their families are to thrive. New and revitalized systems that provide access to inputs and markets as well as time-saving technologies and services are needed to get agriculture moving.
MOVING
GETTING AGRICULTURE
IFPRI provided evidence on how novel solutions can reduce risks related to agricultural technology adoption and encourage investments in modern technologies. In Bangladesh, providing insurance leads to a 16 percent increase in agricultural expenditures, including a 26 percent increase in fertilizer expenditures by farmers.
THE CEREAL SYSTEMS INITIATIVE FOR SOUTH ASIA (CSISA)
More than 206,000 smallholder farmers were reached with an emergency backup seed supply in drought-ridden parts of Ethiopia. Almost 3 million farmers are using a voucher, system for easier access to credit for purchasing agricultural inputs such as fertilizer.

We set up Alive & Thrive as a learning grant…there would be impacts on the populations reached, but the greatest benefit would be the learning and the ability to translate that learning more widely.
ALL PEOPLE NEED NUTRITIOUS AND SAFE FOODS YEAR-ROUND TO BE HEALTHY AND TO LEAD PRODUCTIVE LIVES. We work across the agriculture, nutrition, and health sectors to make entire food systems—from field to fork—healthier for everyone, especially women and girls.
