IFPRI’s research seeks evidence-based solutions for transforming our food systems to end hunger and malnutrition sustainably and equitably. Our efforts span the globe, with partners in more than 70 countries and offices in 13 countries. Our researchers address a wide range of issues that include developing climate resilience, building inclusive markets, promoting healthy diets and nutrition, strengthening institutions and governance, and transforming rural economies, all while fostering gender equality, to improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people.
The Three C’s
In 2022, three great global challenges — climate change, conflict, and COVID-19 — threatened food security and livelihoods in many vulnerable counties. These urgent challenges cut across all of IFPRI’s research areas, and we are pleased to share highlights of our data and analysis here.

Food Insecurity
COVID-19
Our food systems are inseparably linked to the global climate crisis. IFPRI is providing evidence on impacts, mitigation, and adaptation to inform the national and global policies needed to create sustainable food systems.

IMPACT Projections
Conflict and civil strife are driving a global increase in hunger and malnutrition. In 2022, IFPRI provided tools for tracking crises, evidence on impacts, and solutions to address food insecurity in places suffering local conflicts, such as Myanmar and Yemen. We also contributed significantly to understanding the broad consequences of the Russia-Ukraine war for food prices and national and global food security. Our findings and recommendations drew substantial media attention.

IFPRI and CGIAR
As part of CGIAR’s Systems Transformation Science Group, IFPRI researchers are taking a leading role in many new CGIAR Research Initiatives. Launched in 2022, these major initiatives tackle the transformation of food, land, and water systems; foresight and metrics; digital transformation; climate change; markets and value chains; and gender and inclusion. This work takes advantage of synergies across CGIAR to advance food systems transformation.
Looking
