What are these awards all about?
A far cry from the world five years ago, DevOps is now an established and accepted methodology – and that agility served the world well in 2020. Being able to move and adapt quickly was essential to maintain operations, and the DevOps sector has many achievements to celebrate. The benefits of DevOps are widely recognised, bringing agility, innovation and resilience. But implementing the workflows and, just as importantly, culture are still a sticking point. Approaches and uses continue to evolve. Beyond bringing dev and ops teams together, DevOps is also now about delivering value to customers, recognising the human aspect of collaboration and communication, and realising how it can enhance areas of the business beyond traditional tech teams. Computing’s DevOps Excellence Awards recognise and celebrate the best of every organisation, team, individual, product and tool. With a range of categories covering every stage of progress across the industry, there is space for everyone to celebrate their success.

It was an honour to work with Pearson and transform the world’s largest education company into a DevSecOps leader. Scaling securely is always a challenge but it is essential in maintaining hard-won trust levels among partners and clients. Our work with Pearson enabled them to meet this challenge by creating a self-serve solution that empowered developers to build software securely. We’re committed to our customers’ success, and this means working closely with them to understand, in-depth, their priorities and unique problems so we can create the solutions they need. It also means refusing to simply provide these solutions and walk away and, instead, supporting internal training so every member of the development team understands the problems they are facing and how the new tools at their disposal can fix them. This also sets organisations up for the continued evolution of their security processes to address new issues as they arise. Pearson is a shining example of how a small security team can collaborate with a vast network of distributed DevOps teams to jointly create sophisticated security processes that are embedded throughout the development lifecycle. Our developer-first approach made the Snyk platform a good choice for Pearson. The ability for Snyk to integrate with numerous dependency management tools was critical for rolling out the platform across hundreds of applications with different tech stacks. Moreover, since we could fit seamlessly into development teams’ automated CI/CD pipelines, it was easier to get developer buy-in for the new DevSecOps approach. It’s fantastic to be part of an award that celebrates such innovation and inspires others in the development community in shaping industry best practice. Finding new ways of helping distributed DevOps teams is especially important as remote work becomes more established and digital tools play an ever-increasing role in our lives.
VTB Group is an international financial group whose lead organization is VTB Bank, Russia’s second biggest bank by assets and biggest by charter capital. The Group has subsidiaries and associated banks in Germany, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Georgia and Angola, as well as one VTB Bank in each of China and India and a branch of VTB Capital plc in Singapore. VTB Group has set itself the following strategic objectives by the end of 2022. • Acceleration of the business’s digitalization. This involves a substantial increase in the share of digital channels in interaction with customers: by the end of 2022, over 50% of sales will be fully digital with no need for the customer to visit a branch. Over 80% of service operations will be transferred to remote channels. 100% of our products will be accessible to customers in online channels. • Creation of an advanced operation process platform. This will be based around a new-generation microservice IT architecture which will give the Group competitive advantages in the speed of implementation of tech solutions and market launch of new services. It will be impossible to achieve these objectives without a DevSecOps transformation, as protecting our customers’ personal data is paramount for VTB Group. During 2020, VTB Group launched a large-scale DevSecOps transformation. Separate development and testing environments were created to ensure safe development. The VTB allied company – Innotech helped us in these process. A unique DevSecOps platform was implemented, linking the development, testing and operations environments. The DevOps engineer now responsible for the entire pipeline, rather than for just the part of it within the development environments. Engineering standards were defined and monitoring of compliance with them was established. A large-scale roll-out of engineering practices to more than 350 IT systems and 13000+ software engineers was carried out.

Sometimes an entry is so outstanding that it deserves special recognition in a category of its own. These entries are the subject of our Special Awards. Cultural change is the biggest blocker to DevOps adoption. Trying to force it through from the top down is no good: true company-wide change can only come from the bottom up. This entry realised and embraced that, with fantastic results.
“Combines top-down culture with bottom-up innovation, with truly outstanding outcomes.”
