Jeramiah Irwin, @jerairwin
The Jersey City–based designer attended Afropunk for the first time last year, and the festival’s accepting ethos made him come back again this year. “I love festivals in general, but this one to me is so different. Everyone is so friendly. There’s no judgment,” he says. “It’s really true what they say—the no sexism, no homophobia here.” And given the opportunity to fully express himself, Jeremiah chose a denim corset and ripped jeans that were inspired by the pop-country music he’s been listening to. Says Irwin, “I was going to wear a cowboy hat, but I’m saving that for later.”

Closely Knit
Per MMGNET’s Buyer’s Guide, items should have a leisurely quality about them–think cut and sew knits, and sweater classifications that emphasize comfort but still look composed. That can range from “cardigans draped over the shoulder to sweatshirts styled with a pair of cute pants,” like her own AV Trousers, or a pleated skirt, says Victoria DiSilvestro, founder of jewelry and apparel brand Airotciv by Victoria. Richards agrees, noting the importance of juxtaposition in styling, like a “satin bralette under a more casual sweater.” That “combination of laid-back luxury keeps the balance,” she adds.
Knitwear, however, extends beyond apparel — MeMoi, which offers hosiery and legwear made from high-quality fabrications and knitting techniques, sees tights, knee-highs, and crew socks as key components of this trend. “They can be layered under skirts, shorts, or wide-leg bottoms for a versatile look,” says Serina Agosta-McSweeney, the brand’s Vice President and Creative Director, and a texture like ribbing “adds a timeless, preppy touch that aligns perfectly with the collegiate vibe.”

A Preppy Palette
A strong color message, particularly through blocking and trims, is what differentiates pieces within this trend from others. For an item to feel sporty and collegiate, it should fall into one of two sides of the spectrum. One end of that spectrum is seasonal, with a palette that “features rich autumn tones — like navy, burgundy, and forest green–and classic neutral hues,” says Agosta-McSweeney. The other is sentimental and sees “classic argyles, plaids, and varsity stripes making a strong comeback.” Agosta-McSweeney adds, noting that both help an item “evoke a sense of nostalgia while remaining contemporary.” This assortment of colors and patterns can adorn everything from apparel and accessories to bags and even shoes. Black leather loafers, red stretch-knit flats, and tan suede slip-ons are just a few “old-school classics” having a resurgence, explains MIA SHOES Vice President Michael Strauss.

“The newness of the season is really noted in the accessories mix,” says Jessica Richards. That fun is reflected in the emergence of items including crossbody phone chains, sweet or novel socks (which Richards says “take down the seriousness of a loafer”), and decorative charms. “Otherwise, serious totes or shoulder bags are being made playful by adding loads of little decorative details,” she shares. “This intentionality really gives casual styling a freshness that feels so now.” OMG Blings, which makes bag charms, among other accessories and jewelry, sees a growing need for items that are “versatile and have a fun edge—and a touch of personality,” says the brand’s Account Manager Cathy Wang. “This trend mixes sporty, laid-back vibes with elegant touches—picture a varsity jacket having a crush on polished glam pearls,” she adds, highlighting OMG Blings’s pearl charm strap and initial charms as pieces that “bring that cool-girl twist to the look, and add just the right touch of prep.”

The future of fashion is all about being less serious — blending styles, mixing high with low, and keeping things laid-back and cool. It’s why classic sports-related items, like white sneakers and polo shirts, have been drifting back into wardrobes, but in a less expected way. “A renewed interest in old-school recreation brings back sporty staples realized through a [new] lens,” MAGIC’s parent brand, MMGNET’s SS25 Women’s Contemporary Buyer’s Guide reports. Here, a reclamation of heritage looks and details–from track jackets to varsity sweaters, drawstrings to rugby-style color blocking–are present, but with a more relaxed casual approach. Its popularity is, as MMGNET’s report notes, driven in part by an uptick of activities like pickleball, and a more welcoming approach to sports, but stylist Jessica Richards adds that it’s also heavily influenced by the runways. “Miu Miu, for example, has perfectly captured the mix of sporty luxe and girly sweetness that's been adopted by the street style set.”
