Jeramiah Irwin, @jerairwin
The Jersey City–based designer attended Afropunk for the first time last year, and the festival’s accepting ethos made him come back again this year. “I love festivals in general, but this one to me is so different. Everyone is so friendly. There’s no judgment,” he says. “It’s really true what they say—the no sexism, no homophobia here.” And given the opportunity to fully express himself, Jeremiah chose a denim corset and ripped jeans that were inspired by the pop-country music he’s been listening to. Says Irwin, “I was going to wear a cowboy hat, but I’m saving that for later.”

Retro Remix
Diana Hagerman, President of Seychelles & BC Footwear, describes the trend as “a nod to the simplicity of bygone eras blended with the revival of an updated retro styling.” That ‘70s feel is reflected throughout, from fringe details on leather accessories to ruched details on maxi skirts. To land that vintage-with-a-modern-twist, Archer suggests looking for pieces that “feel layered with meaning” and offer an effortless appeal — but don’t rely too heavily on decades-old tropes. From the Spring 2025 Young Contemporary Buyer’s Guide, those items include frilly blouses for an updated take on the peasant top, a baggy weekender jean in place of flared bottoms, and a fabric flower choker over longline metal necklaces. “It's all about embracing contrast,” Archer adds.

Texture Play
At the center of the trend, Richards says, is the white dress: “Look for textural fabric plays like eyelets or crochets, dimensional sleeves, or frill and ruffle details,” she says of elements that turn a simple closet staple into stand out. The feminine aspect of the trend also, as the team at Dolce Vita shares, “involves a sheerness and lightness in clothing, including translucency,” which is found in varying degrees, from chiffon to intricate openwork and lace.
Texture is also a focal point in the trend’s accessories. Per Hagerman, key attributes in footwear are “soft handmade details that include woven materials and twisted knots or bows,” citing Seychelles’ Avalon flat as a versatile (and vintage-inspired) option. An over-the-knee boot is an equally great option for giving the trend’s feminine, loose dresses some edge. Designers at Dolce Vita recommend pairs “in sumptuous suede or soft-grained nappa” that have “subtle western elements or ruched details.” Texture also gives the perennial-favorite ballet flats a boho feel: Classic or with a Mary-Jane strap, in velvet, mesh, or crinkled leather, the shoes “add a lowkey ease that works with tailored shorts or skirts of any length.”

Also nodding to the ‘70s is the trend’s color palette. “This includes rich chocolate, deep reds like wine and cranberry, and taupe-cast olive,” says Dolce Vita. Found in solids versus psychedelic prints, the shades give each piece a refined feel. Hagerman says an emphasis on neutrals, particularly rich tans and browns, are what consumers are gravitating towards with everyday footwear. For special occasions, “we’re seeing metallics being a strong accent that takes a look seamlessly into evening,” she adds, noting these shiny shades give a playful pop without distracting from the overall vibe.

Chemena Kamali’s debut at Chloe for the Fall 2024 season ushered in a new wave of soft, boho romance that combines feminine touches with a relaxed casualness. “As the trend cycle moves out of the opulent, adventurous metallics and bling-laden styling of Y2K looks, it's now entered a softer nostalgic moment from the mid-aughts,” says stylist Jessica Richards of the style’s latest resurgence. This iteration feels less stringent, more at ease, with a free-spiritedness reflected in the silhouettes — think: “relaxed shapes that maintain an air of effortlessness in their cascading layered styling,” she adds — and flowy fabrics that emphasize movement, but can, as Richards suggests, “be grounded with contrasting denim or leather.”Beyond shape and feel, here are key components of the Femme Boheme trend featuring brands from MAGIC’s Las Vegas event. As Taylor Archer, owner and designer of jewelry brand Rad + Rae says, “it’s all about channeling a free spirit, but with an edge that commands attention.”
