Timeless with a Twist
“Core styles create stability,” says Sydnee Miller, director of merchandising at
Barefoot Dreams. “But small updates, such as refreshed colors or subtle design tweaks, can make the assortment fresh, without overwhelming the customer.” Think: a more fitted, shrunken version of a polo shirt, or a cropped trench jacket instead of a longline coat. That strategy, she notes, enables retailers to “balance consistency with newness.” She suggests referring to styles that resonate with customers and making “thoughtful updates that feel on-trend, but also will be relevant for seasons to come, by focusing on pieces that bridge the gap between innovation and tradition.”
Leslie Lang, sales director at Insight New York, says the brand is always looking for ways to update classic pieces via new colorways, but also through “surprise details,” like ruching on the sleeve of a top, a statement neckline, or a blazer with a more elevated lining. She also points to “new shapes in bottoms” — like the everyday
track pant or trouser-style Bermuda shorts — that are classic and wearable but still
feel of-the-moment.
Reframe Basics
as Investment Pieces
As consumers continue to prioritize sustainability and gravitate towards trends like “quiet luxury,” items that are versatile but also offer value and longevity will reign supreme. “Quality is being prioritized,” Miller says, “as is more intentional shopping.” She continues: “Minimalism also aligns with today’s lifestyle needs: It offers flexibility, ease, and sophistication without excess.”
The packaging around these pieces should be just as nuanced. “Brands and retailers will need to reframe basics as investment pieces,” says Rudow That means positioning essentials like tanks, flowy trousers, sturdy denim, structured waistcoats, and oversized Oxford shirts as not just outfit layers, but as “elevated wardrobe foundations” that do one — if not all — of three things: 1) bring slight volume; 2) add a modern heritage feel, or 3) cater not only to a variety of aesthetics and occasions, but also a wide age range.
“Buyers should view minimalism within their core business as a way to support and anchor the broader fashion segments,” Miller adds.
Building a diverse and enticing mix of basics means leaning into relevant shades, prints, and fabrics that bring the Future Classics trend to life.
“New fashion colors are the best way to pick the perfect assortment,” Lang notes, pointing to hues like teal, fuchsia, amber, and mint. Offer trend-forward accessories, like the mini bowler bag, in these bold pops.
Miller, meanwhile, is seeing “rich earth tones, like rust, terracotta, moss green, and deep brown” reemerge for fall. “These grounded colors style nicely with textured layers and subtle metallic accents, adding depth and dimension to the season,” she says.
Fabric also plays a key role for dress brand Maggy London. Sally Hernandez, senior account executive at the label, has found scuba crepe — a staple material — to be having a moment. “Our brands have benefited from the current suiting trend,” she says. “We are focusing on evolving this fabric in ways that feel fashion-forward but still rooted in classic silhouettes, rather than being trend-dependent.”
Visual interest for the Future Classics also comes through in prints: Timeless stripes, playful dots, and gingham bring a fresh European twist to basics. “Plaids and geometric prints have also emerged as key patterns,” adds Miller. “They bring a sense of structure to the assortment.”
Future Classics isn’t a trend, it’s a mindset. As shoppers rethink their wardrobes, foundational pieces that transcend age, occasion, and style will win with consumers and retailers alike.
Shoppers are leaning into longevity. Here’s how retailers should respond.
Depth Through
Color, Patterns, and Prints
Timelessness is trending, signaling a shift in how consumers prioritize what they add to their wardrobes. “A woman wears 10% of her closet 100% of the time,” says Leslie Lang, sales director at Insight New York. “Retailers need to make their selections accordingly.” That insight captures the spirit of the Future Classics trend. As a key concept featured in the SS26 Contemporary Women’s Buyer’s Guide, Future Classics reimagines tradition through modern silhouettes and refined details.
“‘Future Classics’ refers to timeless shapes and essential pieces that balance style, comfort, and functionality,” says Jordan Rudow, VP of events for MAGIC and OFFPRICE. “There is a demand for effortless transition dressing: Pieces built to move across seasons; items polished enough for work and relaxed enough for leisure.” Fashion by Informa’s 2025 U.S. Fashion Consumer Outlook Report supports that growing desire: 28% of consumers said they prioritize the versatility of clothing, while 26% look for timeless designs.
Retailers looking to tap into this consumer shift must offer a range of everyday pieces that will withstand time and trend cycles. From effortlessly worn-in denim to heritage-inspired outerwear to boyish shirting, the right styles will deliver value: quality, longevity, and wearability. “Function is as, if not more, important than fashion,” Lang offers.
Buyers attending MAGIC New York, which takes place from September 14-16, 2025, will want to explore brands offering modern sportswear collections and consider ways to bring the trend into the fold. Ahead of the event, we asked participating brands to share the components, from color palettes to thoughtful fabric selection, that retailers should focus on.
