Insight Article
Discover the solutions from Insight that support health and social care organisations to ensure data is protected.
Over half of people surveyed trust NHS with their personal data.
Over the years, Insight has built up considerable experience of working with data and technology across healthcare and social organisations. Our data consulting services alongside our proprietary LENS service for Azure helps organisations set up and start to use cloud technology rapidly, often within days, rather than weeks. We also have significant AWS expertise and recently helped NHS Arden & GEM Commissioning Support Unit, a subsidiary of the NHS, move its COVID support website and app to the AWS cloud platform. As a priority, we needed to ensure that the website and app could meet the required security standards for hosting large amounts of confidential patient data. In fact, the website security profile we improved exceeded NHS data security standards. We also helped improve the security profile for the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. We moved patient data from the Trust’s aging servers into an enterprise cloud environment, boosting security and protecting the Trust’s data with backup and replication tools designed for virtual environments. The work we do with healthcare and social care organisations is based on our deep understanding of the data privacy issues faced by the sector. Our work is usually carried out after workshops where we establish the best solution to deliver essential outcomes while protecting data confidentiality, integrity and availability. As organisations across health and social care come to rely more and more on personal data to improve how they work and personalise their services, data security becomes an increasingly important factor. And it’s one that will only increase as new data sources become available and new analytics technologies like AI help improve the use of data. Insight is on hand to ensure that not only is data protected, but it is sufficiently available, accurate and reliable to base decisions on that save lives.
The Insight Impact
Making sure that the tools and technology ensures that the data is available at any time (healthcare doesn’t keep office hours) and from anywhere via the internet.
3. Availability
Taking care of the data, protecting it from improper deletion or modification and giving the user confidence that the data is reliable.
2. Integrity
Preventing unauthorised access to sensitive data, guarding privacy and giving the subject confidence that their data is protected.
1. Confidentiality
Ensuring data security involves setting up policies and principles that explicitly protect data. Three main principles that define data security are:
The other side of data security relies heavily on data being fit for purpose – that it is clean, reliable and accurate. Health and social care decisions based on data have far reaching consequences. So, it’s essential that it is trusted. Today we are in an era where data and AI services are easy to set up and use. The sheer volumes of data available for analysis opens up opportunities to be creative about how you use it, as long as you can trust the strength and security of the data platform, and the reliability of the data. information safely. In some situations, data privacy is a safeguarding issue and the ethical issues around data sharing are complex. NHS Digital has updated its security awareness toolkit ‘Keep I.T. Confidential’ to help support social care organisations improve security culture within care settings.
Insight has helped health and care organisations exceed NHS data security standards.
Using Data as the Foundation for Decisions
When it comes to handling personal data, trust is of paramount importance. According to an Open Data Institute (ODI) and YouGov survey, the NHS is the only organisation where over half of the people surveyed said that they had trust that their personal data was used ethically. It’s vital that care providers store and share information safely. In some situations, data privacy is a safeguarding issue and the ethical issues around data sharing are complex. NHS Digital has updated its security awareness toolkit ‘Keep I.T. Confidential’ to help support social care organisations improve security culture within care settings.
Confidentiality, integrity and availability are core principles for data security.
Building Trust and Safeguarding Data
Using Data to Save Lives
The value of data in health and social care is widely recognised by the UK Government. In June, it issued an updated policy paper called; ‘Data Saves Lives: reshaping health and social care with data’. In the foreword, the Secretary of State says, “We cannot deliver the change that we need to see – and our 10-year plans for cancer, dementia and mental health – unless we embrace the digital revolution and the opportunities that data-driven technologies provide.” Work is underway to make the NHS and social care more data-driven. It’s already a strong feature of the work that Insight does within the NHS and across the public sector. If data is to be the driving force and the foundation for decision-making for such significant matters, it has to be strong, resilient, accurate and reliable. This is where data security plays a dual role. Data must be secure enough to use reliably, and also must be kept secure to protect the people whose data it is. The more the NHS and other care bodies use patient data in an increasingly wide range of applications, the more people will naturally want assurance that their information is secure and not open to exploitation. Reassuring people that their data will be handled safely and ethically is a key challenge for the government.
Data Saves Lives -
Data is vitally important in health and social care scenarios. At an aggregate level, it highlights trends and informs decisions about planning and commissioning services to meet local needs and support integrated care systems. Analysing data provides insights to develop new diagnostics and treatments. Over the course of the pandemic, the daily Coronavirus updates relied heavily on data about cases and transmission rates - making it, from a data perspective, one of the most heavily scrutinised events that I can recall. At an individual level, data that is used to power artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics can help GPs make better use of their time with patients by being better informed. AI in a clinical setting can aid diagnosis and predict potential health risks to allow early intervention. Today, more data is available to healthcare and social care workers than ever. And technologies like cloud services make accessing the data faster and easier than at any time previously.
Santo Orlando, Insight’s EMEA Practice Director for App and Data Services describes what it takes to ensure the security of data used by health and social care organisations.

Fully supporting students and educators
Education experiences should be as consistently high-quality, inspiring and engaging as possible for students, whether remote or on-campus.
Technology’s responsibility, moving forward
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, technology’s role was to be a facilitator for education. But in this new phase, and in the future, it has a new responsibility: providing the kinds and standards of education experiences that are now needed. Unified experiences, bringing together remote and on-campus students. Engaging experiences that are valuable for students and fulfilling for educators. Better education experiences for everyone. Not all devices on the market will enable these experiences. Only some, such as the industry-leading Microsoft Surface Hub 2S, are capable of supporting remote, on-campus and hybrid learning completely successfully, across a wide range of scenarios. The technology that can rise to tomorrow’s challenges will show its true value in the weeks, months and years ahead.
Educators should be able to teach remote attendees as naturally and effectively as the ones sitting in front of them.
If you’re thinking that’s a tall order, you’d be right. It’s all too easy for remote students to feel disconnected and disengaged, with some students zoning out and others feeling disinclined to speak up or participate fully. Poor remote education experiences are often overwhelmingly passive – more like watching a video or webinar than attending a real seminar. Most people who study for a degree (for instance) only do so once in their lives, at considerable expense. They would rather not spend it merely watching a series of lacklustre webinars – to put it somewhat bluntly. Education experiences matter – and students will be judging them.
Covering all the bases and unifying sessions
So, as we’ve illustrated, there are now a range of scenarios that educational institutions may have to cater for in future:
The challenge educational institutions now face is to unify these sessions. That means using their technology to ‘bring together’ all the students as if they were learning in the same place. Equally, lecturers must feel as much as possible as if they’re teaching a unified group of students. Okay, so that’s all much easier said than done. But these are aims that educational institutions must keep at the top of their minds if they’re to succeed with new learning modes. The kinds and quality of experiences that universities offer will be paramount.
Sessions held solely for students on campus, the ‘traditional’ way Seminars and lectures where all students are attending remotely Mixed, hybrid sessions with both on-campus and remote students
• • •
New possibilities for long-distance learning
Even when the concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic are far behind us, remote learning will remain. In the same way that employees and businesses everywhere are embracing the flexibility and new possibilities of remote working, many students and universities are keen to explore new learning options that are now possible. Overseas students are particularly relevant to this topic. Instead of facing the upheaval and expense of relocating themselves and their lives to another country, they may now be able to attend prestigious institutions overseas without being apart from their homes, friends and families. This is good news for students all over the world, and for universities wishing to make the most of this new long-distance demographic. But it adds another element to what is already a complex situation for education.
This is the first in a series of articles about the future of education and how educational institutions can best provide for students’ and educators’ needs as we move ahead.
The story so far
After a turbulent year, universities and colleges are carefully and gradually making their way back to normality. But the future remains uncertain. In this article, we’ll explore how educational institutions can prepare themselves for whatever comes next, and ensure consistently high-quality, engaging and inspiring experiences for students – wherever and however they’re attending.
In recent times, educational institutions have not known week-to-week or month-to-month whether lectures and seminars would take place on campus or online. And despite the cautious optimism of the present, they still cannot be certain whether the immediate or long-term future will see a return to completely on-campus teaching or periods of full-remote teaching again. One of the many lessons of 2020 is the importance of being prepared for dramatically, suddenly changing situations – both on global and local scales. The future could also require a ‘hybrid’ model of education that mixes both on-campus and online sessions, or even a mixture of both in-person and remote attendees in individual seminars or lectures. Students who are COVID-shielding, quarantining, or have other health-related concerns may still need to learn remotely when many of their peers have returned to campus. Their ability to access education is an important consideration for institutions everywhere.

Insight supports nonprofits to realise the benefits of digital transformation
9% of charities have been through a digital transformation process
At Insight, we have put innovation to practical use and are in the process of building an inventory application that is used by foodbanks. Writing a low code app using Power Apps will mean that non-technical people on the front-line can quickly get to grips with it. We will make it available on GitHub, a social networking site for programmers where nonprofits and other organisations can access it. The inventory app has a dual social impact, it addresses both food shortage and food wastage problems. The fact that the foodbank app is low code is important for the sector. Many of the people who work for and volunteer with charities are tech novices. Those who perform IT roles may not be full-time, and even charities that do run to an IT department face the same skills shortage as every other organisation. The services that Insight offers help to plug the skills gaps for nonprofits. Our professional services teams design and build projects to kickstart digital transformation and spin up cloud services in next to no time. Adoption and change management services ensure that the new systems are embedded and used by charity workers to deliver optimal benefit. Insight’s managed services often act as a charity’s IT department. Our negotiating power means that we can get great deals on premium kit, a real advantage when it comes to attracting young, tech-savvy talent. It also prevents the risk of ‘shadow IT’ and unsafe practices where people buy their own equipment which isn’t secure and can open the doors to cyberattack or data loss. Insight’s managed services take responsibility for making sure technology is up to date and working effectively. We also operate as a helpdesk, freeing up a charity’s valuable in-house IT resources to handle bigger problems than resetting passwords. The Nonprofits and Housing Association team is focused on driving maximum value back into the sector. For example, we work with partners to recoup income from decommissioned hardware. This goes back into the nonprofit’s Insight account to offset future purchases to support their ongoing digital transformation journey. The sector is hugely important to Insight and to me personally. I consider it a mission to find pragmatic solutions to help nonprofits save money. After all, every pound we help charities save is a pound they can put back into their communities.
60% of charities have a digital strategy in place .
Social Impact – the Insight Story
Technology for Social Impact
Many charities have made innovative use of data to improve the services they offer to the individuals in their care. One autism charity, for example, collects and analyses data about its young people’s activities to gain a better understanding and mapping of autistic behaviours. This helps the charity predict triggers and intervene where needed.
Innovation
Accurate reporting is essential for governance and accountability. It helps prove the impact of their work to donors and stakeholders. Plus, it’s key to instil trust and boost the charity’s reputation. This is all powered by data.
Transparency
Data can help charities improve efficiency, save time and resources by focusing on programmes that deliver a measurable benefit. It also helps with budgeting and making better financial forecasts to optimise spend and resources.
Improve services
Data and analytics helps charities understand their audience segments and fundraising platforms better. They can use data to tell the story of the impact they are having and where donors’ funds are making a difference.
Fundraising
We see several ways that nonprofits can benefit from adopting data-driven strategies:
The past two-and-a-bit years haven’t been easy for the nonprofit sector. Pandemic restrictions curtailed major fundraising events like the London Marathon, street collections and coffee mornings, and high-street charity shops were closed for the duration. While face-to-face donation opportunities may have declined, online and cashless donations increased. CAF, the Charities Aid Foundation, reported that between January and June 2020, public donations to charities increased by £800 million compared to the same period in 2019. Like other areas of the economy, technology stepped up when traditional routes to revenue were closed off. This has made the sector more aware of the opportunities that a digital approach offers. The problem is that many nonprofits see technology as out of reach, either too complex or too expensive to consider. This might explain why the level of digital transformation among nonprofits is low. According to the Charity Digital Skills report only 9% of charities have been through a digital transformation process and embedded it. However, 60% of charities now have a digital strategy in place compared to 2020, which is a positive sign. Clearly charities see digital transformation as an opportunity, and those we are talking to are particularly keen on becoming data-driven. They are often data rich and want to know how to use the data they already have, and how they can use technology to capture and access new data. Once we start these conversations, they quickly turn to ‘what can we do to bring data to life, and how can we put it to best use?’
Barnaby Newell, Insight’s Client Director for Nonprofits and Housing Associations
Every pound that a charity saves is a pound they can put back into their communities
In this article, Barnaby explores the benefits that technology offers the nonprofit sector, and how Insight is helping it overcome the challenges and maximise its IT investment to help communities.

The NHS Trust has a new future-proof IT platform – helping to keep patient data secure.
The digital champions report that they are saving up to two hours per week using the new tools, compared to previously.
All employees are now communicating and collaborating through M365 – reducing the risks associated with shadow IT.
All employees are now working on a secure, fully supported IT platform, giving the Trust peace of mind that patient data is secure. Having successfully adopted M365, the digital champions trained, and are now supporting, the wider team in making effective use of the new digital tools. As a result, all employees across all three sites are now using the approved platform – reducing the use of shadow IT and improving productivity. Employees now have a clearly defined ‘new way of working’ using M365, which enables them to collaborate more effectively, especially when working remotely. The digital champions reported that Whiteboard and Forms have been collaboration situations and gather feedback on training.
The Benefits
The NHS Trust chose Insight to supply its Microsoft M365 licences because it was confident that the Adoption and Change Management (ACM) team would ensure successful implementation of the new tools and deliver good value from its investment. Insight’s ACM team worked directly with the Trust’s employees to understand their current ways of working and determine any frustrations, challenges, and pain points. The Team then identified the features of N365 that would be most beneficial to employees’ efficiency, productivity, and collaboration, and helped the client to define the look and feel of a ‘new way of working’. The ACM team then set up a pilot group of digital champions within the NHS Trust and presented members with an Art of the Possible workshop, demonstrating how Microsoft M365 could benefit them in different scenarios. The ACM team worked closely with the Trust’s digital champions to empower them to successfully adopt M365 themselves and to bring other users on board. The training focussed on the tools that would bring the most benefit to the Trust’s employees, including document sharing and co-authoring (using SharePoint) surveys and evaluations (using Forms) and advanced Microsoft Teams skills. Following the training, the ACM team conducted a ‘lessons learned’ workshop to identify any further training requirements, and to refine the training program for the wider team rollout. Insight also provided technical support when the Trust migrated its SharePoint solution to the latest version of SharePoint Online.
The Solution
The NHS Trust’s on-premises IT estate was about to go out of support. It therefore urgently needed to ensure that patient data would remain secure. The Trust also wanted to improve communication and collaboration, as employees were spread across several sites, working in silos, and using traditional, paper-based processes. The pandemic made this need to implement secure collaboration tools even more urgent. Many staff were using their own software and hardware to communicate (shadow IT) and this was a particular threat to data security. The Trust therefore also wanted to ensure that all employees would adopt the digital collaboration tools and use them to work more efficiently and securely. The Trust planned to move to Microsoft M365 to address these challenges – but needed a partner to supply the licences and ensure successful implementation and adoption.
The Challenge
Insight Adoption and Change Management services, Licence Consulting Services.

Quick overview
Insight’s client, an NHS Foundation Trust, runs three teaching hospitals and has 6,500 employees. When support for its on-premises infrastructure was coming to an end, the Trust approached Insight for help with moving to a cloud-based infrastructure. The Trust also wanted help and advice on introducing cloud-based tools to improve communication and collaboration.
