The Balancing Act
The people, profit, and planet accounts shouldn’t be assessed in isolation. After all, Elkington explains that “the TBL wasn’t designed to be just an accounting tool. It was supposed to provoke deeper thinking about capitalism and the future, but many early adopters understood the concept as a balancing act, adopting a trade-off mentality.” Referring to the TBL Venn diagram, adopting a trade-off mentality may result in three types of imbalance. The most common is profit account imbalance: performing well on the profit account but poorly on the people and planet accounts. This may result in negative consequences like labour exploitation and deforestation. Indeed, many organisations that aren’t aware the TBL exists may be guilty of this. The second type is people account imbalance: performing well on the people account but poorly on the profit and planet accounts. This may result in negative consequences like underemployment and deforestation. The third type is planet account imbalance: performing well on the planet account but poorly on the people and profit accounts. This may result in negative consequences like labour exploitation and underemployment. Only by performing well on all three accounts can an organisation achieve balanced sustainability that benefits people, profit, and the planet simultaneously.
Takeaway
Sustainability isn’t just environmentalism. It’s a three-dimensional concept that balances people, profit, and the planet simultaneously.
Jeroen Kraaijenbrink defines social sustainability as “the positive and negative impact an organization has on its most important stakeholders. These include employees, families, customers, suppliers, communities, and any other person influencing or being affected by the organization.” Call it the people account.
People
In the TBL, profit doesn’t just mean the traditional financial metric of how much money an organisation generates after costs are subtracted from revenue. In this context, it means anything economic. Kraaijenbrink defines economic sustainability as “the positive and negative impact an organization has on the local, national and international economy. This includes creating employment, generating innovation, paying taxes, wealth creation and any other economic impact an organization has.” Call it the profit account.
Profit
The planet relates to the modern environmental definition of sustainability discussed earlier. Kraaijenbrink defines environmental sustainability as “the positive and negative impact an organization has on its natural environment. This includes reducing its carbon footprint, usage of natural resources, toxic materials and so on, but also the active removal of waste, reforestation and restoration of natural harm done.” Call it the planet account.
Planet
A more holistic view of sustainability was theorised in 1994 by John Elkington when he coined the term “triple bottom line” (TBL). This is a measure of commercial sustainability that focuses on people, profit, and the planet.
Triple Bottom Line (TBL)
TBL Venn Diagram
Sustainability is perhaps the most topical word in the IT world today, but its definition isn’t as narrow as people may think.
What is Sustainability?
Sustainability became a buzzword in 1987 after the UN’s Brundtland Commission defined it as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. This is mirrored in the Oxford English Dictionary today: “The property of being environmentally sustainable; the degree to which a process or enterprise is able to be maintained or continued while avoiding the long-term depletion of natural resources”. Clearly, the modern definition of sustainability is entangled in environmentalism. Like all words, though, its definition has evolved during its lifetime.
Environmental Sustainability
The English word sustainability is derived from the Latin word sustineo: to uphold, sustain, endure. Historically, then, sustainability was not inseparable from environmentalism. This inseparability is a recent evolution linked to the environmental crisis. At Apex Evolution, we believe the environmental definition of sustainability is too narrow for modern commercial purposes.
Evolution of Sustainability
Whilst environmental sustainability maybe directly applicable to an IT product there are multiple areas to consider when looking as sustainability in a broader context.

Cloud technologies, such as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) are a secure, efficient, and flexible alternative to legacy hardware and software. The cloud offers access to scalable, powerful infrastructure, and advanced capabilities that would otherwise be beyond the reach of many public sector organisations. The ability to aggregate and store data allows agencies to share data and create entirely new, personalised digital services for citizens. Security is enhanced by billion-pound investments made by major vendors and updates are applied automatically. Most public cloud platforms are GDPR compliant and certified to handle regulated workloads, such as healthcare, and offer the ability to store data in a certain region. For any workloads that cannot be migrated, public cloud platforms can work alongside private clouds or more modern on-premise infrastructure in hybrid cloud environments. A cloud-based infrastructure enables public sector employees to access data and applications on any device from any location, driving productivity and enabling flexible working. These benefits can be realised while lowering Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by facilitating a shift from a CapEx to an OpEx model. Cloud services are subscription-based, so they eliminate the significant up-front costs associated with cyclical hardware refreshes and allowing the costs of transformation to be spread out over a longer period. Automatic updates don’t just improve security – they also ensure organisations always have access to the latest innovations. Organisations only pay for what they consume, and subscriptions include deployment, support and maintenance. This frees up budget and allows IT departments to focus on digital projects that drive genuine change. Legacy IT might seem like a safe option both financially and operationally, but the opposite is true. The pandemic has demonstrated the need for agility and exposed the inability of decades-old infrastructure to support the modern public services that people expect. The signs are that the public sector is listening. By 2025, more than half of government agencies will have modernised critical core legacy applications to improve resilience and agility.[3]
The path to modernisation
By 2025, more than half of government agencies will have modernised critical core legacy applications
The UK government paid £5.5m for extended Windows XP support in 2014.[4]
Find out how Insight can help your organisation start its transition to more modern, agile infrastructure that can support next-generation public services with a hybrid cloud assessment.
Security is another concern. As technology gets older, support from vendors becomes less comprehensive or is withdrawn entirely. When Microsoft ended support for Windows XP back in 2014, the UK government paid for an additional 12 months of updates because several agencies were still reliant on the operating system – which was first released back in 2001. Yet, in 2018, many police forces were still running the platform on some of their machines, against the advice of data protection authorities. If a product isn’t supported, or if an organisation hasn’t applied the necessary updates, then the scope for a cyberattack is high. You only have to examine the fallout from the 2017 ‘WannaCry’ ransomware attack on the NHS to see evidence of such disruption. Treatments and appointments were cancelled in many trusts, as essential systems and medical equipment were crippled. Maintaining a secure IT environment is crucial for public sector organisations because the data they hold is so sensitive, and therefore valuable. The estimated cost of WannaCry on the NHS was believed to be £6 million, while the introduction of the EU’s GDPR directive brings the possibility of huge fines for organisations that do not take the necessary steps to protect user data.[2] The financial implications of a data breach would inevitably affect any agency’s ability to deliver but the reputational cost would just as significant. Jeopardising public trust at a time when digital technology is becoming an integral component of public services could undermine any transformation effort.
Many public sector organisations continue to ‘sweat’ their legacy IT assets in the belief this is a safer, more cost-effective option. But this approach is not only flawed – it actively stifles the digitisation that can deliver the public services an increasingly digitally-literate population now demands.
Security challenges
The cost of maintaining legacy IT systems is a huge drain on budgets and this burden only increases as the technology gets older. Patches and security updates must be applied manually by internal IT teams or through outsourcing, taking away resources that could be better used to drive transformation. A report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) found that HMRC spent too much time updating legacy IT systems during the pandemic and that 80% (£53.2 million) of the additional IT costs incurred were spent on legacy IT.[1] Sweating assets makes no sense, either in operational or financial terms. By committing to legacy IT, businesses lose out on the efficiency and productivity gains that cloud applications and infrastructure provide, while still needing to spend more money on upgrades. Legacy IT also constrains the ability to digitise because it is usually procured for a specific task rather than as part of a holistic strategy with interoperability in mind. Data is often inaccessible or unreadable and can’t be used by other departments or applications. Siloed and inaccessible data restricts organisations’ ability to tap into the potential of data analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and limits their ability to create new services. What’s more, if employees are unable to access work applications and information from any device, then it becomes impossible for them to work remotely or in the field – stifling productivity.
The cost-effective myth
80% of HMRC’s additional IT costs during the pandemic related to legacy tech
The use of modern technology to transform the public sector is not a novel concept. Many observers recognise innovations such as cloud infrastructure, advanced data analytics, and intelligent applications that can maximise resources and deliver better quality services for citizens. These benefits can be realised across the entire spectrum of public services, whether in central and local government or in healthcare, education and policing. However, the pace of transformation has been slowed by a variety of technological factors, the most significant of which is a continued reliance on legacy IT systems. Many government organisations see legacy IT as a tried-and-trusted option that enables continuity. They believe these systems are cost-effective and are willing to sweat these assets until they are unusable rather than commit to purchasing new hardware and software. But the reality is that these systems are incapable of providing the digital-first services the public has grown to expect (especially since the pandemic) and are not as economically efficient as many decision makers might believe.

The Benefits
Prior Park Schools provided over 700 high-spec laptops, in a time of scarcity, with no initial outlay for parents or teachers.
846 students were able to continue their education during lockdown while learning remotely.
Prior Park Schools were able to identify the best devices for their needs and test it prior to any commitment.
Overlaps were configured to the school’s and college’s specifications and supplied ready to go straight out of the box - saving the school’s IT team many hours of work.
Prior Park Schools students can now continue their studies even when they are unable to attend school and college, avoiding disruption at critical points in their education. Similarly, teachers can continue to provide lessons and help students when remote learning is required. Students are able to access online resources, communicate with teachers and keep their studies on track. The devices also allow teachers to use innovative, digital techniques in their lessons, and will be a key enabler in the school’s drive towards digital transformation. Prior Park Schools were able to provide all students and teachers with laptops without any initial outlay from parents or the school – thanks to the leasing agreement. The devices were already configured to the agreed specifications when they were delivered, saving, time and providing reassurance for the Prior Park Schools IT team in very challenging times. All the devices are fully guaranteed against accidental damage – giving both parents and teachers peace of mind.
The Solution
When Prior Park Schools needed to source a large number of laptops in a hurry at a time of peak demand, Insight brought its expertise and bargaining power into the procurement process. Insight set up a series of online meetings with Prior Park’s IT and finance team to get a deeper understanding of the school’s and college’s needs and priorities. Having established the exact specification to meet the school’s and college’s needs, there was huge pressure to make sure the laptops were manufactured and shipped before the academic year. Insight worked closely with the manufacturer to negotiate the best possible lead time and price. Insight was then able to procure and deliver the devices within just a month, enabling the schools to put its remote learning plan into action. Making the devices accessible to all was a major part of the challenge. Insight negotiated a finance package with Dell, enabling the schools to lease the devices simply and cost-effectively. This made it affordable for parents to equip their children with an approved laptop, with no initial capital outlay required. To ensure the laptops complied with the school’s and college’s security and guidance rules, all the devices were configured with Windows Autopilot prior to shipping.
Prior Park College and The Paragon Junior School, which make up ‘Prior Park Schools’ are co-educational independent Junior Schools and Colleges in Bath, committed to providing truly modern, digital learning experiences to its students. As part of its digital vision, the schools wanted to equip students and their teachers with laptops. However, when schools were closed during the first lockdown, the requirement for remote learning devices became imperative. Education settings across the country were in the same situation and competing for a limited number of devices, leaving Prior Park Schools needing over 700 laptops when demand was at its highest. The schools faced a race against time to protect its students from disruption to their learning. To add to the challenge, the schools wanted devices with a good specification and a wide range of features for its students to use including a second, world-facing camera. However, the schools needed to keep costs as low as possible for parents. Prior Park Schools approached Insight to help find a fast, effective and affordable solution to enable students to keep their education on track while learning from home or self-isolating.
The Challenge
Prior Park College is an independent school for girls and boys aged from 11 to 18. The Paragon School is an outstanding co-educational independent junior school for children aged three to 11 years. Combined, the schools have 846 students and offers opportunities to excel in sport, culture and the arts. Prior Park Schools needed to urgently equip all students and teachers with a laptop, so that they could continue lessons during lockdown. Insight provided over 700 laptops for teachers and students in the schools so they could continue lessons during lockdown. A Dell finance package enabled the school to lease the devices, resulting in an affordable outlay for parents.

Quick overview
Mark Minghella, Head of Digital Teaching and Computing, Prior Park College
“Prior Park College and The Paragon Junior School aims to empower students to collaborate and learn interactively through digital technology. Even before lockdown we wanted to give each pupil and member of our teaching staff a laptop. Post lockdown this became No.1 priority. “Insight helped us to identify the right device for our needs and then procure laptops at a good price incredibly quickly – despite fierce competition at the time.”
Prior Park College and The Paragon Junior School, both independent co-educational schools situated in Bath, wanted to equip all of their students and teachers with laptops as part of a drive towards collaborative learning. The project took on a new urgency when the pandemic hit, and the schools needed to keep students learning during lockdown and into the new academic year. Insight used its close relationship with Dell to secure delivery of 715 devices at the absolute peak of demand.

Fully supporting students and educators
Education experiences should be as consistently high-quality, inspiring and engaging as possible for students, whether remote or on-campus.
Technology’s responsibility, moving forward
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, technology’s role was to be a facilitator for education. But in this new phase, and in the future, it has a new responsibility: providing the kinds and standards of education experiences that are now needed. Unified experiences, bringing together remote and on-campus students. Engaging experiences that are valuable for students and fulfilling for educators. Better education experiences for everyone. Not all devices on the market will enable these experiences. Only some, such as the industry-leading Microsoft Surface Hub 2S, are capable of supporting remote, on-campus and hybrid learning completely successfully, across a wide range of scenarios. The technology that can rise to tomorrow’s challenges will show its true value in the weeks, months and years ahead.
Educators should be able to teach remote attendees as naturally and effectively as the ones sitting in front of them.
If you’re thinking that’s a tall order, you’d be right. It’s all too easy for remote students to feel disconnected and disengaged, with some students zoning out and others feeling disinclined to speak up or participate fully. Poor remote education experiences are often overwhelmingly passive – more like watching a video or webinar than attending a real seminar. Most people who study for a degree (for instance) only do so once in their lives, at considerable expense. They would rather not spend it merely watching a series of lacklustre webinars – to put it somewhat bluntly. Education experiences matter – and students will be judging them.
Covering all the bases and unifying sessions
So, as we’ve illustrated, there are now a range of scenarios that educational institutions may have to cater for in future:
The challenge educational institutions now face is to unify these sessions. That means using their technology to ‘bring together’ all the students as if they were learning in the same place. Equally, lecturers must feel as much as possible as if they’re teaching a unified group of students. Okay, so that’s all much easier said than done. But these are aims that educational institutions must keep at the top of their minds if they’re to succeed with new learning modes. The kinds and quality of experiences that universities offer will be paramount.
Sessions held solely for students on campus, the ‘traditional’ way Seminars and lectures where all students are attending remotely Mixed, hybrid sessions with both on-campus and remote students

New possibilities for long-distance learning
Even when the concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic are far behind us, remote learning will remain. In the same way that employees and businesses everywhere are embracing the flexibility and new possibilities of remote working, many students and universities are keen to explore new learning options that are now possible. Overseas students are particularly relevant to this topic. Instead of facing the upheaval and expense of relocating themselves and their lives to another country, they may now be able to attend prestigious institutions overseas without being apart from their homes, friends and families. This is good news for students all over the world, and for universities wishing to make the most of this new long-distance demographic. But it adds another element to what is already a complex situation for education.
This is the first in a series of articles about the future of education and how educational institutions can best provide for students’ and educators’ needs as we move ahead.
The story so far
After a turbulent year, universities and colleges are carefully and gradually making their way back to normality. But the future remains uncertain. In this article, we’ll explore how educational institutions can prepare themselves for whatever comes next, and ensure consistently high-quality, engaging and inspiring experiences for students – wherever and however they’re attending.
In recent times, educational institutions have not known week-to-week or month-to-month whether lectures and seminars would take place on campus or online. And despite the cautious optimism of the present, they still cannot be certain whether the immediate or long-term future will see a return to completely on-campus teaching or periods of full-remote teaching again. One of the many lessons of 2020 is the importance of being prepared for dramatically, suddenly changing situations – both on global and local scales. The future could also require a ‘hybrid’ model of education that mixes both on-campus and online sessions, or even a mixture of both in-person and remote attendees in individual seminars or lectures. Students who are COVID-shielding, quarantining, or have other health-related concerns may still need to learn remotely when many of their peers have returned to campus. Their ability to access education is an important consideration for institutions everywhere.

Smart wireless saves money
Support digital signage in waiting rooms or for wayfinding. Transmit across HD image systems, up to 10Gb connectivity.

Connect surveillance cameras simply: even use PoE to power them to as much as 100 metres away. Use wireless to securely connect to data storage: keep patient data safe, without needing to run extra cables.
Surveillance and storage
Reliable wireless in even the most densely populated areas, such as busy waiting rooms: capacity for everyone to log-on. Have separate, secure Wi-Fi networks for staff, patients and visitors.
Digital density no problem
Reliable connectivity across the entire site, ideal for clinics, even as much as a mile away. Keep doctors and nurses connected to Wi-Fi as they move from ward to ward. Use easy Wi-Fi expansion to overcome dead-spots or support temporary sites.
Wide area coverage
Keep networks in good physical condition:
Teams that are busy looking after patients or essential admin want connectivity that provides an always-on, consistent, stable and fast experience. It also has to be flexible, affordable and able to cope with their increasing daily demands. Connectivity needs to ‘just work’. The latest in wireless (and switching) technology meets all those needs. Plus, for resellers and VARs, there’s also the growing opportunity to support customers in healthcare, even in a completely remote way if required. NETGEAR has extensive experience in the healthcare market and is here to help healthcare professionals, VARs and resellers make the most of what wireless has to offer: secure, flexible, affordable, easy-to-use and reliable products and services, with excellent performance and support.
The healthcare profession depends on reliable connectivity more than ever. It’s vital in helping hospitals, doctors’ surgeries, dental practices and other care centres manage their day-to-day schedules.

Cloud and true transformation
1/3 of UK citizens fear technology will led to social inequality[8]
Many organisations were caught off guard during the early stages of the pandemic and took an ad hoc approach to digitisation. A more digitally aware public is less likely to be tolerant of this approach going forwards The challenge for the public sector now is to overcome the technological and cultural barriers to digitisation while simultaneously minimising the risk of marginalising citizens who are unable to engage with digital public services. If the public sector is to make services as intuitive and personalised as consumer applications like Netflix, and to reap the efficiency and productivity gains afforded by new technologies, then it must have the agility and capability to roll out new services that maximise its data assets. The first step is to end reliance on legacy IT systems that drain resources through excessive maintenance requirements, stifle transformation through a lack of interoperability and adaptability, and increase vulnerability to cyber-attacks as they age.
Overcoming barriers
Although the number of digitally engaged citizens has increased organically since then, the pandemic accelerated the wider digitisation of society. People who previously had no interest or lacked the necessary skills have been forced to do more activities online. Lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures have forced many people to use technology for work, education, communication, entertainment, and shopping. Meanwhile public agencies moved to online models of delivery for many services in order to maintain continuity. According to Ofcom, the proportion of homes without an Internet connection fell from 11% before lockdown to just 6% in March 2021, and 60% of those without access had asked someone else to do something for them online in the past year.[3] In 2020, Lloyds predicted it would take until 2025 for 58% of the population to be digitally capable, but the figure is already 60%. This means five years’ progress has been made in just 12 months.[4] The public is now far more comfortable with digital services in all walks of life, giving rise to greater numbers of ‘digital citizens’ who will expect digital public services that are as seamless and easy to use as consumer services like Netflix or Amazon.
Cloud infrastructure and applications provide a more scalable, agile, cost-effective platform for digitisation. Public sector organisations gain access to resources and capabilities that would otherwise be beyond their reach and data can be used across multiple workloads – including advanced analytics and Artificial intelligence (AI). The better use of data can result in more personalised, targeted and effective services. However, data must be used ethically, and it must remain secure if the government is to maintain the public’s trust. Any misuse of information or a data breach could have regulatory implications and undermine any wider benefits of digitisation. Public cloud platforms are supported by billion-pound investments in security and updates are applied automatically, strengthening protection. Many cloud services are also certified to handle workloads in regulated industries, such as healthcare, aiding compliance. Because cloud-based data and applications offer enhanced protection, public sector organisation employees can have access on any device in any location, aiding flexible working programmes and allowing staff to be more productive in the field. However, public sector organisations must take care to ensure that the digitisation of public services does not exacerbate the digital divide and the impact of exclusion. Efforts should be made to improve digital skills, and to make provisions for those unable or unwilling to participate. Affordability is another major issue, as demonstrated by the shift to remote education when many families lacked the necessary technology or connectivity. Digital transformation is a huge opportunity for the public sector and one that the wider population now also recognises. Nearly three quarters (71%) of people in the UK now agree that we need modern technology to solve future problems, while 76% are keen to participate in online voting.[5] Government organisations that have grappled with the challenges of digitisation behind closed doors will now face more scrutiny from these more expectant digital citizens.
The rise of the digital citizen
6% of UK households do not have internet access[7]
Back in 2019, a survey showed that 28% of British citizens didn’t know how to access any government digital service. Half of respondents said they would have more trust in the government if it did a better job of explaining how digital technologies would improve their everyday lives.[1] The fact that just 62% of citizens that had interacted with a digital public service were satisfied with their experience and that 45% said they would increase their use if they could access multiple services from a single portal suggests the government was not communicating effectively. Another cause of disinterest among the public was a lack of digital skills among certain demographics. According to another study from the same year, there were 11.2m people that lacked the essential skills required for day-to-day life in the UK and 6.1 million were ‘digitally disengaged’ – meaning that they had little or no digital behaviours.[2]
Public attitudes
The pandemic has accelerated the wider digitisation of society and forced the public sector to use new technologies to ensure continuity in delivery. Government organisations are now under more pressure to deliver digital public services from a more expectant population of digital citizens.
71% of UK citizens believe modern technology can solve future problems[6]
Around ten years ago, the UK government adopted a ‘digital-by-default’ approach to public service. This shift in strategy was due to a recognition that new technologies had the potential to drive efficiencies and maximise the resources of government departments, while creating better quality, more convenient services for citizens. These benefits are not only realisable in central government, but across the entire spectrum of government agencies. Health, education, and local government can all be transformed through innovations like cloud infrastructure, data analytics, and intelligent applications. There have been some digital success stories in the public sector, but overall change has been slow as many organisations have been unable to grapple with the challenges of digitisation. The failure of some public sector organisations to embrace digital transformation has been masked by the fact that large swathes of the general public have traditionally been either uninterested in, or uncomfortable with using public services. However, the evidence suggests that such organisations cannot hide behind a lack of public scrutiny for much longer.
