1] You’ll find a more detailed description that examines the ‘What, Why, Who, When, Why and How’ of the metaverse in our latest Tech Journal.
Insight offers solutions that can help small and medium-sized businesses prepare for tomorrow’s technology today.
The metaverse isn’t just for big organisations with big budgets. In fact, these enterprises often also have big chains of command, so decisions take longer to turn around. Smaller businesses can steal a march with their increased agility and ability to react to change faster. Look at lessons learned from the post-Covid adjustments to remote working. Preparation will vary by industry, by your challenges and the type of customers you have. Now is the perfect time to investigate what the metaverse can do for you, and how it can expand your horizons.
Small and medium-sized businesses should take a serious look at the opportunities the metaverse can provide. It is delivering real benefits today, especially in virtual environments that support or simulate physical activities. Getting a head start with metaverse concepts and using it in a small way will prepare the ground for the benefits the metaverse is expected to deliver.
Engage with partners who are already delivering AR and VR solutions to explore different options
Look at opportunities to improve your business processes with mixed/ assisted reality
Consider what the metaverse could do for you in the future. This might mean rethinking your business model and taking necessary steps now
Increase digitalisation – get the technology you need to build an online presence or expand your existing presence
Forward thinking businesses already have the metaverse on their horizon. They are investigating ways to incorporate virtual and augmented reality into their business processes and customer experience. As it’s still early days, there are practical steps that smaller businesses can take to prepare:
Get ready for the metaverse
Mixed reality technology, like Microsoft’s HoloLens, is already being used to great effect in medical and surgery scenarios. This technology could equally be applied to the servicing of vehicles, production lines and other machinery, where the manufacturer’s engineer is able to service or repair the product remotely via an on-site/customer’s operator. In the same way, the technology could be used to train people who need skills to perform physical activities, like a hairdresser or chef. There are significant cost savings available to businesses that offer remote servicing through mixed or assisted reality as they can scale servicing and deliver training without increasing core overheads.
Servicing plant and machinery
Hosting virtual environments for customers enables a business to present its brand experience in an immersive way. In ways very similar to prototyping above, customers can try on products such as clothes via an avatar. This is already used by several retail sites but extending the simulation right up to the checkout gives customers a more complete interaction with your brand. Restaurants can host virtual dining experiences where each person orders their food delivery via an online menu and enjoys a connected experience with the people around their table.
Improved customer experience
By replicating the real world in a virtual environment, the metaverse means that physical products – for example, a backpack, clothing – can be virtually prototyped faster. It reduces the cost associated with design iterations and the time needed to reproduce different sized and coloured models. Manufacturers can reduce time and cost at the design stage and get early feedback from users and focus groups.
Faster, easier prototyping
Lower cost of service through improved business processes
The past 10-20 years has seen a strong technology focus on collaborative working practices – from file sharing, instant messaging, document synchronisation and video-conferencing. The metaverse promises to take this to the next level. Adapting business processes to use mixed or assisted reality will reduce costs for smaller businesses as well as encourage greater collaboration. People can experience working in the same room, around the same table, on the same machines even. Project work and product development allows colleagues to share the same view of the project or product’s status in real-time. What’s more, everyone has the equivalent voice or presence. Just as they would in a real-life setting. The metaverse removes the ‘present vs remote’ divide that people often experienced in meetings before the pandemic.
Greater collaboration and democratisation
Accelerate product development, prototyping and user testing
So, big question, what does the metaverse mean for small to medium-sized businesses? It may seem like it belongs to a galaxy far, far away, but it is getting closer and, yes, it will deliver benefits to businesses of all sizes. In fact, it already is.
Without spending too much time on definitions, the metaverse is a like a ‘real-world’ internet, where people can interact in virtual environments without being physically present[1] . At the moment the ‘real-world’ element is experienced through virtual reality headsets, but again this is constantly evolving.
The metaverse promises to be a game-changer, like the internet was when it first came along. Just as today’s internet is unrecognisable from its earliest days, the metaverse will follow the same sort of trajectory. Some expect that, in as little as two or three years’ time, we’ll be wondering what we ever did before the metaverse.
Improve customer engagement with your brand
Since Facebook rebranded as Meta last year, the metaverse has certainly generated a lot of media interest. As the metaverse realm is being developed, many larger organisations are exploring how they can utilise and benefit from the space. But does the metaverse offer any opportunity for smaller businesses with under 500 employees?

1] The Digital Transformation of SMEs – OECD library
Discover the solutions from Insight that support small and medium-sized businesses extend limited IT resources to deliver their digital transformation.
Small and medium-sized businesses need to make the best use of limited IT resources, especially as competition for digital skills heats up. Encouraging self-service and using dedicated on-demand resources helps release IT staff from repetitive, time-consuming work to spend on accelerating transformation projects.
Small and medium-sized businesses have to use every advantage to be as lean, productive and efficient as they can be. Smaller leadership teams mean that they can be agile and make faster decisions. But they also suffer because they don’t have the right IT resources in place on demand. Implementing greater self-service or end-user responsibility goes a long way towards releasing IT teams from repetitive, time-consuming work. Implementing changes brought about by digital transformation to optimise the value can call for additional, specialist resources. Installing these experts, even for a short time, can be the biggest accelerator for success of your transformation projects.
Change is difficult in any organisation, large or small. Implementing a technical change is one thing – getting people to adopt it and integrate it into their working lives is another. The value of controlled change within transformation project cannot be overstated. It’s more than making people aware of the change, it’s making them excited about the change. A great way to do this is to create a network of change champions across the business who can answer questions, run training and provide the dynamism to embed change.
Adoption and change management
Taking eProcurement and TCO one step further can take away the pain of providing and managing devices for hard-pressed SMB IT teams. Device as a Service (DaaS) replaces the traditional approach to hardware provision of buying PCs, mobiles, etc. over a two-to-five-year cycle. It removes the risk of employees having to use older, inferior, less secure technology. It also reduces maintenance and internal operational costs as modern device management approaches reduce the time IT teams have to spend manually configuring laptops at individuals’ desks. What’s more, devices can have software, security, access and network features pre-installed for the individual employee – saving more time and improving security.
Device as a Service
A key part of tech ROI is understanding Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) – essentially, how much are your employees costing you? Auditing what technology is being used by whom and for what purpose can reveal gaps or over supply – generally making IT use more efficient and productive.
Total Cost of Ownership
Buying IT – whether that’s software licences, laptops, headsets, mice, etc., – takes up a lot of IT teams’ time. Providing a pre-approved set of technology and tools to purchase online removes the burden on IT teams and puts responsibility back with the department. A company-wide ‘Amazon-lite’ can ensure that no shadow IT creeps in as people try to game or bypass the procurement system.
eProcurement
A quick win to give IT teams back their time (and sense of self-worth) is to encourage a self-service approach among end-users. Providing knowledgebase articles, or even better – videos, empowers end-users to solve their own issues and learn how to fix them if they reoccur or head off that problem happening again. Take passwords. According to Gartner, password resets make up to between 30 and 50% of a helpdesk ticket queue[2]. Enabling people to reset their own passwords – something users of any app or personal system will be familiar with – can release valuable IT resource.
Self-service
Shift-left is a term used in development operations. If you imagine a timeline from left to right, the earlier you incorporate something in the development process, the further left it is placed. By incorporating empowerment, self-service or even automating manual tasks early in a process, the sooner they become established and embedded. For IT teams, this can save valuable time that can be better spent elsewhere.
Shift-left with empowerment and self-service
For a long time, technology’s key role in an organisation was to enable it to achieve more with less resource. As time has gone on, technology has opened up so many new business opportunities and facilitated so much change, that it is itself taking up a lot of resource just to manage and maintain it. By alleviating the pressures on IT people, they can focus on the important things that keep the business operating. Having to deal with incidents and issues around the business means that the big tasks, like maintenance, can be neglected. This is a big problem for smaller and mid-sized businesses that may be inclined to run, say, a server until it falls over. The implications for the business could be catastrophic. At Insight, we believe there is a way. Changes to the way your IT teams – and end-users of IT services – work can help distribute the load and keep the focus on essential and strategic development.
Achieve more with less
The digital skills gap is felt acutely in smaller businesses who have to compete with larger companies offering higher salaries and other benefits. Within businesses of up to 500 employees, the ambition for greater, faster digital transformation is considerable as business leaders recognise the capabilities of IT as an accelerator for business growth. Music to the IT managers’ ears perhaps, but how can they deliver these ambitions with a limited team?
Businesses of all sizes are reaping the benefits that digital transformation delivers, particularly in this age of remote working sparked by the pandemic. COVID-19 accelerated the push towards digitalisation and, since the start of the pandemic, 70% of SMBs have made more use of digital technologies[1]. IT teams rapidly became the heroes of the day by ensuring that people had access to laptops, networks and tools. The pressure on IT people was immense, and it shows little sign of letting up. In fact, the lack of skilled IT resource is a major issue for many businesses who want to continue their digital transformation momentum.

VMware Carbon Black Cloud protects endpoints and workloads against advanced threats using a single platform, console and agent to prevent and respond to attacks faster. The platform leverages intelligence from more than one trillion events per day across millions of global endpoints. It combines multiple security capabilities to help small to medium sized businesses work more efficiently.
a. Hunt for threats with recordings of all endpoint activity b. Detect anomalous activity with threat intelligence and frequency analysis c. Feed response actions directly back into hardening and prevention
Detect & Respond
a. Stop more malware by combining exploit prevention, machine learning, and file reputation b. Shut down unknown attacks with behavioural analytics and ransomware decoys c. Easily adapt prevention todetected behaviour inyour environment
Prevent
a. Understand current state of over 1,500 artifacts on any endpoint or workload b. Run ongoing assessments to track IT hygiene c. Take immediate action with live, remote access
Identify risk
Current Capabilities:
Improve analytics - as behaviours are seen globally
Scale effortlessly - to millions of endpoints
Contain attacks - even on home networks
Deploy and protect in hours - not months
Shifting to cloud-native security will enable you to:
Gain extensive visibility into system state and endpoint activity to confidently prioritise vulnerabilities and respond to threats faster.
Comprehensive real-time risk assessment:
Leverage analytics from more than one trillion global events per day for behavioural prevention that adapts to your unique environment.
Context-driven behavioural prevention:
Reduce complexity and enable teams toeffectively improve security together from asingle, shared source of truth, and security thatis agentless on workloads.
Single consolidated platform:
The results are:
VMware Carbon Black Cloud weaves intrinsic security capabilities into the underlying fabric of the entire VMware portfolio, and integrates with other cloud infrastructure providers to provide additional value to teams across your organisation. VMware Endpoint and Workload Security, through Carbon Black Cloud, leverage a single platform, console and agent to delivery industry-leading prevention, detection, and response that help identify and respond to attacks faster. It also gives you far richer context in what these endpoints and workloads are and how they’re being leveraged by the applications and data that you are ultimately protecting.
VMware Carbon Black Cloud™ provides rich analytics to solve these challenges across a whole range of platforms.
Threats target workloads differently from the way they target endpoints. This is why a legacy EPP security provider is not sufficient to secure workloads. To protect workloads effectively, organisations need deep visibility into application behaviour.
Similar approaches to endpointand workloads security
There are several tools within the risk identification, prevention, detection and response lifecycle that we deal with daily. And while these tools need to be connected use cases, different teams end up buying and implementing them separately, with their own consoles, agents, policy sets, and overall configurations.
Security and IT teams are siloed
There are too many installed agents but too few insights. Your security and IT teams try to stay aligned but are relying on their own siloed tools to achieve their separate goals, rather than working from a single source of truth to achieve shared business objectives.
Too many point products
Given the current threat landscape, your organisation needs more than what legacy anti-virus delivers. You need to protect your endpoints and evolving workloads from cyberattacks. But there are a series of fundamental challenges that prevent this.
VMware puts teams in the power seat.
Carbon Black gives small to medium sized enterprises the protection to disrupt advanced attacks before they compound. With the continually evolving threat landscape, settling for a check box on security is laying out a welcome mat for cyber-attacks. Whether organisations want to replace antiquated malware prevention or want to empower a fully automated security operations process, VMware Carbon Black fully meets those needs.
Endpoint Protection for the Modern Enterprise
Intrinsic security is context-centric and goes beyond helping you understand threats. It factors in the broader context - the applications and data you need to protect. It means having deeper visibility into apps, processes, data, who is accessing that information and from where.
Context-centric
Security needs to become more unified interms of tools, techniques and teams to reduce complexity. With intrinsic security you canconsolidate isolated tools, bring them together on a platform and create more integrated workflows to identify threats faster.
Unified
Building security into the infrastructure gets rid of the agents, appliances, and sensors that bog down and disrupt compute capacity and leads to a more efficient way of collecting richer data. Security should also use the infrastructure to protect applications, gain visibility and better enforce security policies.
Built-in
Intrinsic security means leveraging infrastructure, with security built-inacross any app, any cloud, and any device. VMware intrinsic security is:
Intrinsic security is a unique approach that leverages your infrastructure to secure. It is built in – not bolted on. It is unified to help you reduce the number of security tools and enable teams to operate from the same source of truth to reduce complexity. Intrinsic security helps you understand your own environment - applications, data, and how those two elements leverage your infrastructure. All of this simplifies security so you can focus on strategic priorities that deliver business results.
What is Intrinsic Security?
Every day, attackers are getting smarter and coming up with new techniques to avoid detection and traditional antivirus (AV) is no longer enough to keep safe. Small to medium sized enterprises can now broaden, deepen and extend their defences with VMware Intrinsic Security solutions, available from Insight. VMware Carbon Black integrates with existing infrastructure to maximise company resources and deliver reliable security at every control point.
