Phensiri “Care” Sathianvongnusar left a corporate job in 2011 to dip her toes in the world of start-ups. Working in Bangkok for Berlin-based incubator Rocket Internet, she helped set up the technology, logistics and marketing capabilities for emergent Southeast Asian e-commerce platform Zalora. Armed with that experience and a sense that Southeast Asia was on the cusp of an e-commerce boom, Care discussed the idea of helping other companies to establish an online presence over a casual lunch with her eventual founding team. Within two months of that conversation, in February 2013, aCommerce was born.

“When you give up a great career to start something completely unproven, people often think you are impractical. I had moments where I doubted myself, so support networks were essential to help with that self-belief and focus.”
Brighte provides finance to help Australians overcome the biggest hurdle to powering their lives with renewable energy: upfront costs. Katherine McConnell founded Brighte in 2015, leveraging her industry knowledge as an energy finance specialist and first-hand experience of slashing her power bill in half after installing solar panels at home six years earlier. The Sydney-based FinTech has extended over AUD 1.5bn in financing to help people fit out rooftop solar systems, purchase electric vehicles or install energy efficient appliances, helping to offset 1,000,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year – and counting.

Chrisanti Indiana co-founded Social Bella in 2015, combining her design and communications background with the finance and IT skills of her friends John Rasjid and Christopher Madiam. The company operates Sociolla, Indonesia’s leading specialist beauty and personal care omnichannel retail platform and has ridden a boom in e-commerce across Southeast Asia.
Today, more than half of the company’s seniormanagement positions are occupied by women – a noteworthy achievement considering women account for only a third of executives in the global beauty industry and occupy senior management positions at only 22% of Indonesian firms, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report.
