A2L refrigerants have a lower flammability rating, so the impact to safety and installation protocols will be minimal.
INSTALLATION

Only the least flammable, safest refrigerant will do for heat pumps.

Save money and help protect the planet with the most efficient class of refrigerants available.
A2L
A2L refrigerants can save you money and help protect the planet. They have low GWP and low flammability.

More About The Transition
Our next-generation refrigerants comply with the AIM Act to reduce greenhouse gases. Just like the industry transitioned from ozone-depleting hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerants to hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants, we are transitioning to low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants.
Refrigerant Transition
All refrigerants are flammable, but the differences between how flammable they are is significant. A2L refrigerants have low flammability, making them safer to use.
FLAMMABILITY
Safety protocols are largely the same. Since the A2L classification has a lower flammability rating, many of the best practices you’re used to are still applicable. We’ve developed service and installation training to help our partners in the field during this transition. Your technical service rep can help you with more information.
INSTALLATION
RDS will be required under certain conditions and will be factory-installed on some equipment. RDS can be ordered and field-installed where it is deemed necessary. For specific applications, installers should refer to their local governing bodies for details and requirements regarding installation and use of RDS. Johnson Controls has the selection tools and will provide guidance and assistance as needed.

*Per the sixth assessment report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), R-32 has a GWP of 771. However, the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, which regulates HFCs at the federal level, still uses the GWP measurements from the fourth IPCC report. This currently allows R-32 to stay within the 750 cutoff generally accepted as the minimum GWP value for low-GWP refrigerants used in air conditioning.
