As industries push towards sustainability targets,
e-fuels are driving the transition to sustainable energy. These advanced synthetic fuels offer a low carbon solution for aviation, shipping, and beyond.
At Johnson Matthey, our e-fuels technologies provide
a rapid, scalable pathway to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), maritime and road transport fuels. Designed to help these industries accelerate decarbonisation, our solutions provide a route to lowering carbon emissions while using proven technologies.
What are e-fuels?
Why e-fuels?
Powering the next era of flight with e-SAF
At the forefront of sustainable aviation, HyCOgen represents Johnson Matthey's Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) technology. This process, combined with
FT CANS, converts CO₂ and renewable hydrogen into SAF, enhancing supply and production efficiency while promoting feedstock flexibility..

Charting a cleaner course with e-methanol
Johnson Matthey has been commercialising its
e-methanol technology since 2011. Our eMERALD technology converts captured CO₂ into methanol,
a versatile chemical feedstock and crucial fuel for the shipping industry. Delivering up to a 143% reduction in carbon emissions, eMERALD allows you to make
e-methanol for longer with fewer interruptions, lower costs and greater reliability.

A sustainable alternative to natural gas
For over two decades, Johnson Matthey has been
a global leader in Substitute Natural Gas (SNG) production. Our DAVY™ licensed plants supply more than 50% of the world’s SNG.
Through the methanation process, renewable hydrogen and CO₂ are converted into e-SNG or
e-methane, a sustainable alternative to natural gas.
e-SNG seamlessly integrates into existing natural gas systems and can be used as a drop-in fuel to help decarbonize LNG infrastructure, shipping, and gas grids.

e-Fuels are synthetic fuels made from renewable hydrogen and captured CO₂. Through highly efficient and reliable processes like eMERALD™ and FT CANS™ / HyCOgen™, these elements are combined to create renewable drop-in alternatives to conventional fossil fuels. The production of e-fuels follows a power-to-X approach - converting renewable electricity into liquid or gaseous fuels that are easy to store, transport and use.
