At Johnson Matthey, we offer proven solutions to accelerate aviation's decarbonisation journey with drop-in 100% sustainable aviation fuel. Sustainable aviation fuel, also known as SAF, represents a breakthrough in renewable transport fuels. SAF is a collective term encompassing drop-in fuels made from renewable feedstocks designed to decarbonise aviation. These synthetic jet fuels have emerged as key players in reducing the aviation industry’s carbon emissions, typically contributing 70% less CO₂ compared to conventional aviation fuels. Moreover, SAF allows for the seamless utilisation of existing aircraft and airport infrastructure.
Decarbonising aviation with our SAF technology
What is SAF?
SAF use is rapidly growing, and it is poised to revolutionise the airline industry. With our partners, we have pioneered a suite of patented and proprietary technologies and catalysts that target large sustainable pathways for SAF production. We offer proven, feedstock-diverse routes that enable the reduction of GHG emissions for global air transport.

HyCOgen™ + FT CANS™
At the forefront of sustainable aviation, HyCOgen represents Johnson Matthey's Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) technology. This process, combined with FT CANS, converts CO₂ and electrolytic (green) hydrogen into SAF, enhancing supply and production efficiency while promoting feedstock diversification. HyCOgen is fuelling the world's first commercial scale CO₂-to-syncrude plant.

FT CANS™
Our scalable FT CANS technology, developed jointly with bp, delivers superior performance
in jet fuel production, surpassing 'net zero' expectations. Leveraging proven Fisher-Tropsch technology, it efficiently converts syngas from waste and biomass into a sustainable synthetic crude, adaptable to various feedstocks.
