Ready to enter a different world? This striking South Dakota landscape boasts a maze of buttes, canyons, pinnacles and spires. Skeletons of three-toed horses and saber-toothed cats are among the many fossilized species. Wildlife — antelope, bighorn sheep and deer—abounds in the park’s 244,000 acres and can often be seen while hiking, camping or traveling the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway.

crazy horse memorial
At the request of Chief Henry Standing Bear, Korczak Ziolkowski began work on Crazy Horse Memorial in 1948. Once complete, this tribute to the Lakota leader will be the largest mountain carving in South Dakota and the world.

Few truly wild places remain in this country. Custer State Park is one of them. Nearly 1,300 bison wander the park’s 71,000 acres, which they share with pronghorn antelope, elk, mountain goats and a band of burros. State Capitol
South Dakota became a state in 1889. The State Capitol building in Pierre was completed in 1910 and an annex was added in 1932. Scagliola columns, stained glass windows, statues and artwork adorn the inside of the Neoclassical building. The Capitol is open to the public 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and
8 a.m.-5 p.m., weekends and holidays.

On the quarter-section of land Laura Ingalls Wilder's family homesteaded near De Smet, visitors experience South Dakota pioneer heritage through hands-on activities. Ride the covered wagon across the prairie to a one-room schoolhouse session. Make corncob dolls and ropes, see demonstrations of hay twisting and wheat grinding, drive a pony cart, wash clothes, and interact with farm animals. Camping is available, including covered wagons, a bunkhouse, RV sites and tent camping. Hours are 9 a.m.–7 p.m., daily.

Storybook land & the land of oz
While visiting Wylie Park, follow the yellow brick road to Storybook Land & the Land of Oz. For a small fee, ride the train, roller coaster, carousel and balloon rides during the summer months (late May through early September). Wylie Park is open year-round and Storybook Land is open April 15 to October 15. Storybook Land and the Land of Oz rides, concessions and gift shop are open 10 a.m.-9 p.m.

Falls Park is located north of downtown Sioux Falls. The park covers 123 acres and an average of 7,400 gallons of water drops 100 feet over the course of the Falls each second. It includes the visitor information center and observation tower, Falls Overlook Cafe, the Queen Bee Mill, several permanent sculptures, seasonal Farmers Market, playgrounds, walking paths and an open air shelter.
It is home to Winter Wonderland, a display of holiday lights and decorations
every Christmas season. Park hours are 5 a.m.-12 midnight.

lewis & clark state recreation area
The center of activity for the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area is the 25-mile Lewis and Clark Lake. The lake is one of four large reservoirs on the Missouri River in South Dakota, this one created by Gavins Point Dam. Water recreation is the number one attraction, but there are also opportunities for hiking, biking, camping, disc golf, horseshoes and birding.

World's only
corn palace
The World's Only Corn Palace is located just minutes off of Interstate 90 in the heart of Mitchell. Our peak season is Memorial Day through Labor Day. When you visit during this time, you see the Corn Palace come to life as it is redecorated annually with new corn, grain and grass to showcase a new theme. However, the Corn Palace is never completely bare, so you will always see a building that is truly an American icon.
