- Dean Smith
A ’72 graduate of the University of North Carolina, Roy Williams began his coaching career as an assistant for Dean Smith in 1978. While this initial opportunity resulted in 275 wins during Williams’ tenure under Coach Smith, one of his most notable achievements came from the recruiting of Michael Jordan. In 1988, Coach Williams accepted the head coaching position at the University of Kansas, where he would be named Coach of the Year in 1992. Despite success, Coach Williams returned to Chapel Hill in 2003 to become the Head Coach of the UNC Basketball team. To this day, Coach Williams has implemented the principles of Coach Smith to carry on the legacy of the Carolina Basketball program. From recruiting athletes of high character to emphasizing the name on the front of the jersey, the impact of Coach Williams on the program and the university far surpasses his win record.
Head Coach of the Tar Heels from 1961 to 1997, Dean Smith left an unprecedented legacy on the University of North Carolina. Smith was inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in May of 1983, and his impact on the university spans far beyond his 879 career wins. Recognized for his upstanding character and innovations to the game of basketball, Coach Smith had the ability to mentor athletes both on and off the court. Even after his retirement in 1997, Coach Smith made a lasting impact through charitable ventures and in 2013, Coach Smith was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Although Coach Smith passed away in 2015, his unwavering integrity and devotion to the University of North Carolina champions him as an everlasting legacy of Carolina Basketball.
