Since 2020, Nick Marsh has served as a transportation underwriter/broker for RPS in the West Des Moines, IA, office, building a book of transportation business.
“I’d say three things distinguish me from my peers: accessibility, transparency, and drive,” says Marsh. “Regardless of whether I’m in the office, away on business, or on vacation, my retailers know they can always call, email or text me and I’ll get back to them right away. I’m transparent throughout the entire quoting process – not only with my retailers but also the insurers we represent.
“I may not win every deal, but all parties involved in those deals have a detailed understanding of the risk itself, the competition, and the pricing/terms needed to secure the bind order. My retailers and insurer partners also know I’ll exhaust all options to secure the win and I’m not afraid to put in the extra hours to achieve the end result.”
Prior to joining RPS, he spent nearly 17 years with a smaller transportation wholesaler where he worked his way up to the role of AVP of Underwriting. In this role, he split his time as one of the top producers along with overseeing a team of production underwriters in growing their book of business while helping the carriers write profitable business. Marsh’s underwriting career has always been within the transportation discipline, growing his passion for the industry.
Since joining RPS, his leadership and collaboration have led his transportation office to achieve 48% growth and helped his region become a premier fleet truck writing wholesaler in the area. His organization, collaboration, and communication has been instrumental in helping to advance the growth of the RPS transportation practice. In completing his 18th year as a specialist transportation broker providing transportation insurance to his clients, Marsh has established himself as a go-to source for fleet expertise for his clients and carrier partners in the region.
What are his plans for the future? “My goal is to double my book in the next two years along with helping build the transportation team at RPS,” he says. “I came on board two years ago, and it’s amazing to see what our group has done in that short time frame. We have a lot of new, younger people joining our team and I want to mentor them and help them continue to progress in their careers here at RPS. By 2025, I’d like to see our region surpass $125 million in written premium.”
Marsh received his associate degree in Business Administration and Financial Services from American Institute of Business in Des Moines, IA.

What advice does she have for others? “Believe in yourself and never stop learning,” she says. “Being in insurance, it’s also important to take risks in your career to grow and advance. It’s also important to network and build relationships, but really place value in those connections. Not only can that help advance your career growth and overall development, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to build long-lasting friendships along the way.”
With almost 25 years of experience in marketing and insurance, Houser was a wholesale broker before joining Markel. She also served as a hospital corpsman in the United States Navy.
Houser earned her bachelor’s degree from Missouri State University. She currently serves on the Wholesale Surplus Insurance Association (WSIA) board and is an instructor for the WSIA Marcus Payne Advanced School. She received the Dana Roehrig Award in 2012 for her contributions to the NAPSLO (WSIA) convention committee. She also received the 2019 Bill Storey Award for the City of Hope and the 2022 IICF Philanthropic Leadership Award. In addition, Houser previously served as the chairwoman of the IICF Texas Southeast Division and the president of the National Insurance Industry Council for the City of Hope.
“I know it sounds cliché, but I am laser-focused on changing the insurance industry for the better,” he says. “We are building technology, processes and products that are meeting the needs of a changing world. It is imperative that the insurance industry keeps up with the fast pace of change, and I want to make sure I do my part.”
Prior to ALKEME, Barton founded Venture Pacific Insurance, a regional brokerage in southern California that was acquired by ALKEME during the merger. Barton also co-founded Brokkrr, a digital lead generation insurtech platform.
Barton received his BA from the University of Arizona. He has been included in IBA’s Hot 100 list four times in a row. He was also recognized in Vertafore’s Top 25 Disruptors in the insurance industry.
