Clio was founded in 2008 with a belief that would prove well ahead of its time: the legal profession could embrace better technology without compromising the trust, security, and professional standards at the heart of legal work.
Founded in Burnaby, British Columbia, by Jack Newton and Rian Gauvreau, Clio launched at the American Bar Association’s TECHSHOW with one of the first cloud-based software platforms built specifically for law firms. At the time, moving sensitive legal information to the cloud was far from an obvious proposition. Rather than avoiding the profession’s concerns, Clio helped bring questions of security, privacy, and ethics into the open and worked to set a higher standard for how new technology could earn the confidence of lawyers.
That willingness to move early, while taking the responsibilities of the profession seriously, has shaped Clio ever since.
Today, Clio is trusted by more than 400,000 legal professionals across 130 countries and recognized by more than 100 bar associations and law societies worldwide. Its platform now spans the business and practice of law, bringing together the information, workflows, research, and technology legal professionals rely on every day.
AI is increasingly central to that vision.
Clio is building the Intelligent Legal Work Platform, designed to give legal AI the context it needs to work alongside lawyers throughout a matter. That means connecting authoritative legal information with the facts, documents, communications, deadlines, and institutional knowledge surrounding the work itself.
Its $1bn historical acquisition of vLex accelerated that strategy. Described at the time as the largest transaction in legal technology history, the acquisition brought Vincent AI and one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of legal information into Clio. Together, they created the foundation for AI that can draw on both authoritative law and the context of a firm’s work, helping legal professionals move from finding information to acting on it.
Clio’s ambitions extend beyond building better software. Its mission is to transform the legal experience for all, including the professionals doing the work and the clients and communities who depend on them. Access to justice, data security, responsible AI, and the preservation of professional judgment remain central to how Clio builds.
What started as a two-person Canadian startup has grown into a global legal AI company of over 2,500 people. Nearly two decades later, Clio is still making the same fundamental bet: that the biggest shifts in legal technology happen when innovation moves quickly and trust moves with it.
Product overview
Most legal AI starts from a blank prompt. The lawyer supplies the facts, re-explains the file, brings in research from a separate tool, and then checks the output against all of it. Clio Work starts from three things a firm already has:
Your matter. Clio Work already has the documents, correspondence, notes, deadlines, and history on file, and it keeps up as the matter changes. There’s nothing to upload or re-explain, so every answer and every draft is about this client and this file.
The law. Clio includes Canadian case law, receiving judgments directly from every common law court in Canada, alongside federal and provincial legislation and regulations. It’s all part of a library of more than one billion legal documents across 100+ jurisdictions. Every answer links to the passage it relies on.
How your firm works. Skills, writing styles, and your own precedents shape how Clio Work approaches each task, so the output reflects your firm’s standards.
Because all three sit in one place, each step builds on the last. What you learn from the file shapes the research, the research shapes your position, and your position goes into the document. More than 10,000 firms rely on Clio Work today, from solo practitioners to multi-office firms.
Key features and capabilities
Pick up any file and know where it stands. Ask what’s happened on a matter, what’s changed since you last looked, or what you need to know before tomorrow’s client call. Clio Work answers from what’s on file: the documents, correspondence, notes, tasks, and deadlines. Each question builds on the last, and because it sees the whole file, it can flag where things don’t line up – like an indemnity cap your client agreed to by email that’s missing from the draft.
Get through the document set. Ask Clio Work what matters in a stack of leases, a production, or years of financial disclosure already on the matter: key obligations and dates, non-standard terms, admissions, and gaps in what’s been produced. Every finding links to the page it came from and can go straight into a chronology, a diligence summary, or your draft.
Apply the law of your province to your facts. Choose your province, ask whether a restrictive covenant will hold up, and see how the provincial and federal authority applies to the facts of your matter. Each answer is cited to the passage, so you can check it before you rely on it.
Work through your position. Weigh the risk in a deal term or the strength of a claim, test a negotiating stance or an argument against the other side’s best response, and prepare advice your client can act on. The judgment stays with you.
Draft whatever the matter calls for. Some documents need to be written fresh, some follow your firm’s standard, and some are prescribed court forms. A new drafting experience in Clio Work, launching in Canada this November, handles all three.
Bespoke documents: ask for a factum, a share purchase agreement, a will, or a demand letter, and get a fully formatted Word document built from the matter’s facts and the law you’ve researched. You start by editing a draft instead of facing a blank page, in Clio Work’s editor or in Microsoft Word.
Templates: turn your firm’s best documents into templates that fill in each client’s details, so every new matter starts from a version you trust.
Legal forms: find the form you need and Clio Work fills in the parties, file number, and other details already on the matter, so you’re not hunting through court websites or retyping the same information into every box.
Refine any of them in Microsoft Word with tracked changes until the document is ready for your signature.
Show the matter at a glance. Describe what you need and Clio Work builds it from the file: a closing tracker, an entity chart for a reorganization, a settlement comparison for mediation. Export a PowerPoint for a client meeting, an Excel file of the figures, or a PDF.
Put your expertise into every matter. Turn the way you handle a recurring task into a Skill, and Clio Work applies it the next time, for anyone at the firm. Writing styles save the tone and structure you want for a client, a judge, or the other side.
Protect client confidentiality. Clio Work runs on Clio’s enterprise-grade infrastructure, which is SOC 2 Type II certified and complies with GDPR and PIPEDA. Client files are processed under strict zero data retention agreements and are never used to train public AI models. Access follows the permissions already set in Clio, and every answer traces to a source you can check.
Integrations
Clio Work is part of Clio’s Intelligent Legal Work Platform, so it connects to the products Canadian firms already run their practices on:
Clio Manage supplies live matter context, and Clio Work returns its outputs to the matter file.
Clio Grow passes client intake data through to Clio Manage, where Clio Work draws on it.
Beyond the platform, Clio offers more than 100 integrations available to Canadian firms through the Clio App Directory, spanning document storage, email and calendar, accounting, e-signature, and client communication. Clio also provides an open API and a developer program for firms building custom connections.
1) It connects to the matter, not to an upload folder. Clio Work draws directly on the documents, notes, communications, deadlines, and tasks already in Clio Manage. There is no separate library to maintain and no re-uploading as the file grows.
2) It reads and structures the file. Clio Work analyzes large volumes of documents at once and returns a structured view of the matter: the key facts and claims, a timeline built automatically from the record, and the risks and gaps that need attention.
3) It grounds the answer in law. Questions asked in plain language are answered against the Clio Library, matched to the relevant jurisdiction, checked by a built-in citator, and linked back to the source passage so the lawyer can verify outputs.
4) It produces the work. Analysis and strategy become documents that are saved back to Clio Manage as part of the matter record, where they can be reused across the firm or converted to templates in Clio Draft.
