BIS Safety Software is a Canadian technology company that created an environment, health, and safety (EHS) learning and compliance platform for safety-critical industries. Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Sherwood Park, AB, the company serves more than 1,700 organizations and over two million users across sectors such as construction, mining, energy, manufacturing, and transportation.
The platform was not a general-purpose product with a safety module bolted on. It was built from the ground up for regulated industries and has grown over nearly 20 years through direct collaboration with the safety professionals who use it every day. That focus now extends to AI-powered automation designed to speed up compliance, onboarding, certification, and operational readiness.
From a 900-square-foot office to a cross-border platform
BIS opened its doors on April 1, 2006 as Business Improvement Solutions Inc., founded by Dan MacDonald and Carmen Delisle, and initially focused on in-person leadership and management training for companies across Canada and the United States. As the company started to experience excessive demand, it launched its proprietary learning management system to satisfy customers' growing needs, and shifted decisively toward online safety training and software due to the volatility in leadership and management training triggered by the 2008-09 crash.
The evolution has been continuous since. BIS built out digital forms, incident management, asset tracking, and audit tools, and in December 2020 rebranded to BIS Safety Software to reflect how far it had grown. Today, the company operates from a 25,000-square-foot headquarters, and its most significant repositioning to date is the launch of its broad suite of AI-integrated tools and new AI capabilities.
Where analytics and AI fit
AI now runs throughout the platform in practical ways. The AI Form Generator turns existing paper inspection forms, checklists, and hazard reports into digital, mobile-ready versions in minutes, complete with calculated fields, conditional logic, scoring, and digital signatures. The AI Form Assistant then helps front-line workers complete those forms using text, voice, or photos, routing every AI-modified entry through mandatory human review before submission. The AI Course Builder applies the same approach to training, generating structured outlines, slide content, and voice narration for approval.
Because these tools share one system, training records, form submissions, and incident data stay connected. The company’s incident management system is designed to surface trends across incident data automatically, while its training matrix identifies compliance gaps and assigns the right training based on a worker’s role, location, and certification status.
A network as well as a platform
BIS also operates one of the largest safety training networks in North America through its SafetyNET program, which connects more than 700 safety training organizations and gives clients access to more than 1,900 premium online courses through a single platform. The company became the software provider of choice for many of the most recognized safety organizations in Canada, and over the past decade, more than half of its new customers have come through referrals from existing clients.
Product overview
BIS Safety Software is an EHS and safety training platform built for organizations in highly regulated, high-risk industries. It brings a full learning management system, training records, digital forms, incident management, contractor management, equipment and asset management, and reporting and analytics into one connected system, with AI built in throughout. Teams can turn existing documents, procedures, and checklists into training courses and digital forms in minutes rather than building them from scratch, and workers can complete forms in the field using just their voice.
Key features and capabilities
Learning management system: online, instructor-led, and blended training through a secure course player, with an exam engine, role-based branching, and learning pathways; SCORM 1.2 and 2004 compatible, and an AI engine that helps create advanced online learning programs in minutes
Training record management: centralized records, certificates, and qualifications with automated expiry alerts and auto-reassignment
Digital safety forms: AI-powered form creation engine with an additional drag-and-drop builder for inspections, hazard assessments, and audits; works online or offline, with photos, video, e-signatures, logic rules, GPS tagging, and corrective actions
Incident and risk management: real-time incident capture, corrective-action tracking, and earlier hazard identification
Asset and equipment management: track equipment, vehicles, and assets, with QR-code scanning to verify qualifications on site
Embedded AI: AI Course Builder, AI Form Generator, AI Form Completion, and the Ask Amy assistant, all keeping approvals in human hands
Dashboards and reporting: real-time visibility into inspections, incidents, certifications, and compliance metrics
Integrations
BIS integrates with other business systems in several ways. Microsoft Entra ID and BambooHR provide single sign-on and automatic user setup. Prebuilt integrations connect BIS with ADP, Microsoft Business Central, Workday, and Credly. BIS also provides a documented library of connection tools (APIs) that an IT team or outside vendor can build on, and reports can be sent automatically to feed dashboards such as Power BI.
BIS Safety Software is a web app that runs in any browser, with a companion mobile app for iOS and Android that works online or offline and syncs field data as soon as the device reconnects. Its modules are built to work together, so training, forms, records, and asset data share information across one system rather than sitting in separate tools. The platform runs on a community-based development model: when one client funds a new feature, it becomes available to others, so the system keeps improving with thousands of updates each year.
How the product works
After-sales and customer services
BIS supports the platform with two in-house North American teams: a Customer Experience team that handles inbound requests and general technical concerns, and a Customer Success team that handles implementation and onboarding. Support is included in the subscription without call-volume or time limits, and is available to everyone who uses the system, from administrators to front-line workers and contractors. The team can be reached by phone, email, and live chat, with self-serve documentation, an FAQ centre, and a help page. Support is available seven days a week, and onboarding begins with a discovery call and needs analysis, followed by rollout planning, configuration, and training.
