Every school exists for one purpose: to help students learn.
But schools are complex communities and the challenge isn’t simply measuring outcomes, it’s understanding what shapes those outcomes. How do students experience learning in every classroom? How consistently is your teaching and learning framework being lived? Are students ready to learn? Where is great teaching flourishing, and where does it need support?
These are the questions that kept Pivot Professional Learning’s founders awake at night in 2014 and ultimately led to the company being established.
Belinda Harries, Cleo Westhorpe and Caitlin Macleod shared a simple belief: schools make better decisions when they can clearly see what is happening inside their classrooms. By giving teachers and leaders reliable evidence about how students experience learning, they believed schools could strengthen teaching practice, improve leadership decisions and ultimately create better learning outcomes for every student.
That belief became Teaching Quality Insights, a student survey grounded in peer-reviewed research and organised around three evidence-based domains of effective teaching. It gave schools something they had rarely had before: structured, reliable evidence about how students actually experienced teaching and learning.
The timing was right. While many Australian education systems were investing in improvement, there was limited shared evidence about what effective teaching looked like from the student’s perspective. Teachers were committed to improving their practice, but often relied on infrequent observations, instinct and informal feedback. Pivot introduced a new source of evidence, one that placed student voice alongside professional reflection, visibility of practice and instructional improvement.
As the organisation grew, so did its understanding of the factors that shape learning. Research conducted with Australian educators highlighted that student wellbeing wasn’t separate from learning; it was one of the conditions that made effective learning possible and supported students’ holistic development. Schools needed more than anecdotal observations or annual wellbeing surveys; they needed timely evidence to identify students requiring support before smaller challenges became crises.
That insight led to the development of Wellbeing for Learning. Built around the Australian Student Wellbeing Framework and informed by established educational research, the insights help schools understand the wellbeing factors that influence learning while enabling students to seek support through trusted adults when they need it most.
More recently, education systems have increasingly been adopting evidence-informed instructional models. The Victorian Government’s commitment to the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 reflected a broader national movement toward explicit, research-informed teaching practice. For Pivot, this reinforced the belief that school improvement depends on connecting evidence across every level of the school.
Today, Pivot helps schools see what shapes learning by bringing together evidence across three connected domains:
Student engagement: understanding how students experience learning and the conditions that support their success
Teacher impact: helping teachers reflect on how their practice is experienced and where it can be strengthened
Leadership: giving school leaders the evidence needed to guide whole-school improvement and measure the impact of strategic decisions
Together, these connected evidence streams give schools a clearer picture of teaching and learning than any individual dataset can provide.
Engineering for fit and inclusion
PIP Canada highlights products including the PIP RZRBack safety helmet, which the company describes as the first CSA-certified safety helmet built with MIPS rotational-impact protection and designed and manufactured entirely in Canada, alongside G-Tek Paradox cut-resistant gloves and Bisley premium workwear line.
In select categories such as hand protection, eyewear and workwear, the company also offers options engineered to fit women properly rather than resizing men’s patterns. It has further expanded its in-Canada portfolio through the acquisition of Honeywell’s PPE division, adding renowned brands including Miller, North, and Howard Leight.
Product overview
Pivot Professional Learning helps Australian schools and systems see what shapes learning. Its products support teaching practice, student engagement and leadership. Teaching Quality Insights captures real-time student insights on teaching practice, aligned to the school’s instructional model. Wellbeing for Learning tracks and measures the wellbeing factors that make learning possible. Both are built for K-12 schools and systems nationally and are being used by government, faith-based and independent networks. Four components sit behind both products:
Data insights: Pivot helps surface what cannot be seen from the front of the room. Teaching Quality Insights shows teachers how their practice actually lands with the students in front of them, drawn from confidential student feedback. Wellbeing for Learning shows how students are tracking at individual student level, so schools can follow up with the ones who need it.
Reporting: Real-time data gives insights across individual teachers, students, class level, cohort, school and network. Comparative and longitudinal views show movement across terms and years rather than a single moment.
Resources for next steps: Evidence-based guidance supports next steps. Pivot pairs results with professional learning resources, so teachers know where to focus their professional development and leaders know where to target support.
Professional services: Beyond the platform, Pivot’s team works alongside schools to drive results through changes in practice. This includes instructional coaching, tailored professional learning for teachers and leaders, and implementation guidance. 360 Leadership Insights give school and system leadership the support they need to elevate their leadership journey, whether a system-level executive, principal, aspiring principal or department head.
Pivot turns teaching and wellbeing insights into the evidence schools need to drive decisions and strategy. Evidence sits at the core of all products. Teaching Quality Insights has been independently psychometrically tested and is mapped to both the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and evidence-based teaching practice. Wellbeing for Learning is aligned to the Australian Student Wellbeing Framework.
Key features and capabilities
Three age-appropriate question designs: questions designed and served depending on age of students: F-2, 3-6 and 7-13
Accessibility: additional support for students responding with audio and context prompts
Individual and cohort-level reporting: quick and easy visibility from individuals to every cohort a school needs
Students in need report: visibility for wellbeing leaders on which students have requested to speak to a trusted adult
Role-based access: teachers see their own results, leaders see their school, and system leaders see the network
Longitudinal tracking: shows how teaching practice and student wellbeing shift across terms and years rather than freezing a single moment
Executive dashboards: for principals, dioceses and networks, with comparison across schools
Exportable reporting: for accreditation, review and planning cycles
Resource library: results come paired with professional learning resources, so improvement does not stop at the report
Integrations
Pivot works seamlessly inside the systems schools already run. Single sign-on means staff and students can log in with existing school credentials, with no new passwords to manage or reset. Student, teacher and class data is onboarded in bulk through secure file transfer. Results export cleanly for use in school improvement documentation, staff review conversations and network reporting. For systems and networks, data rolls up automatically from classroom to school to system level, giving central teams a live view across every site without chasing individual schools for spreadsheets. Setup is handled by Pivot, not left to school IT.
Both products run on the same four-step cycle. What differs is what gets measured, who sees the results and what the school does next.
Teaching Quality Insights
Set up: Pivot loads school data, configures access and schedules the survey window with the school. Survey: Students respond in class in around 7–10 minutes on any device. Feedback on teaching is confidential. Report: Results are released to the platform at teacher, class, cohort, school and network levels. Act: Teachers use their results to set professional goals. School leaders use aggregate patterns to target professional learning where it will matter most. System leaders compare results across schools to prioritise investment and track impact across the network. The next cycle shows whether it worked. Wellbeing for Learning Set up: The same process – Pivot loads school data, configures access and schedules the cycle with the school. Survey: A starting baseline of 15 questions in five minutes establishes where every student sits across resilience, belonging and safety. Check-ins of one to two minutes then run in five-week blocks, weekly or fortnightly each term. Students who are struggling can reach out during the survey itself, self-referring to a teacher they trust, so support starts at the moment a student asks for it rather than after the next report. Report: Results are released in real time at student, class, cohort, school and network levels. Staff are also alerted in real time when a student requires support. Act: Teachers and wellbeing staff follow up with students who need support, with suggested strategies attached to each result. School leaders direct wellbeing programs and staffing based on cohort patterns. System leaders compare results across schools to prioritise investment and track impact network-wide.
