Manufacturer of cells, battery packs and modules
Producer of zinc-based energy storage systems
Developer of next-gen battery cells
Producer of thermal aerogels
KSP provided growth capital to Lithion, a vertically integrated manufacturer of battery cells and rechargeable and non-rechargeable battery modules and packs. Molex, a Koch company that manufactures electronic connectors, is working with Lithion to build additional capability to Lithion’s battery management systems. These systems serve a diverse array of markets, including industrial and medical.
And that’s not all. Lithion has also leveraged Koch’s partnership to work with KBX Logistics as its third-party logistics provider and works with Koch Project Solutions for project management.
Eos Energy, which makes zinc-based energy storage systems, is also looking to leverage its investment from KSP to optimize its manufacturing process and expand its opportunities with the added benefit of Koch’s diversified knowledge and support.
“Long-duration energy storage is quickly emerging as a critical component of the renewable energy value chain,” KSP Managing Director Jeremy Bezdek said in announcing the deal. “Eos’ world-class leadership team and versatile technology provide us with great confidence in the company’s future growth and ability to succeed in this rapidly growing market.”

KSP participated in a $600 million fully committed PIPE (private investment in public equity) in FREYR, a Norway-based developer of next-generation battery cells. One of FREYR’s key goals: create up to 43 GWh of production capacity in Norway by 2025.
FREYR and KSP also announced a 50%/50% joint venture to evaluate U.S. Gigafactory production of next-generation battery cells for energy storage system, mobility and electric vehicle applications. The joint venture has secured a direct strategic license from 24M Technologies.

Having the engineering know-how and capital to help grow electrification infrastructure is one reason why KSP decided to invest in Aspen Aerogels. With its thermal aerogel products, the Massachusetts-based company focuses on solving energy performance challenges with lithium batteries. Those challenges include energy infrastructure, battery materials, drive range, thermal barriers and building materials for electric vehicles to improve safety.
The company’s solution is PyroThin, a product designed to mitigate thermal runaway (when excessive heat precipitates increasingly more heat) in EVs and energy storage systems.

Recycler of lithium-ion batteries
KSP’s investment in Li-Cycle enables the company to scale its technology globally to address the rapidly growing global demand to source and recycle critical and scarce battery-grade materials, which is imperative to the EV value chain.
KSP’s investment also allows Li-Cycle to tap into Koch Engineered Solutions and KES subsidiary Optimized Process Design as potential partners as it scales up its Spoke & Hub system to recycle lithium-ion batteries. It’s one of many opportunities for an existing Koch capability to add value to a new industry, said KSP Koch Labs Director Ryan Potter.

Developer of lithium extraction technology
KSP’s investment in Standard Lithium will help the Canada-based company continue to expand its proprietary lithium extraction and processing technology in the U.S. Extracting lithium is a necessary process to meet the growing demand for lithium-ion battery-powered devices, such as electric vehicles, phones, tablets, medical devices, toys, appliances as well as energy storage.
Koch Engineered Solutions and Koch Minerals and Trading are exploring strategic opportunities as well, leveraging their capabilities in project management, operations, trading and more, to continue scaling the technology.
