Sen. Bill Nelson
Read bio
Clarence William "Bill" Nelson II is an American public servant, astronaut, and former U.S. Senator known for his decades-long commitment to science, space exploration, and bipartisan leadership. Nelson served as the 14th Administrator of NASA from 2021 to 2025, where he championed innovation and international collaboration in space exploration.
Nelson represented Florida in the U.S. Senate from 2001 to 2019, where he was recognized as a centrist voice and a strong advocate for environmental protection, healthcare access, and space policy. He chaired the Senate Aging Committee and served as Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce Committee. His legislative efforts supported same-sex marriage, tax relief for working families, and the preservation of the Affordable Care Act.
Before his Senate tenure, Nelson served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 to 1991 and in the Florida House of Representatives from 1972 to 1978. In 1986, he became the second sitting member of Congress—and the first from the House—to travel into space. He trained with Senator Jake Garn and flew as a payload specialist aboard Space Shuttle Columbia on mission STS-61-C from January 12 to 18, 1986. Notably, the mission’s pilot was Charles Bolden, who would later serve as NASA Administrator. Nelson had replaced Gregory Jarvis on the flight; Jarvis was reassigned to STS-51-L and tragically perished in the Challenger disaster just ten days later. Nelson later chronicled his experience in the book Mission: An American Congressman's Voyage to Space (1988).
A native of Miami and raised in Melbourne, Florida, Nelson studied at the University of Florida, Yale University, and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia. Although he retired from Congress in 1990, his public service continued with his appointment by President Joe Biden as NASA Administrator, a role he assumed with unanimous Senate confirmation in April 2021.
