As the science and regulations related to PFAS continue to develop, states are adopting new requirements to control the contaminants. Langan uses EarthSoft’s environmental data management system (EQuIS) to keep clients up to date with the evolving regulations, storing large quantities of the latest field data and federal/state action levels. For this project, Langan’s Data Management and Analytics team and GIS team combined public data with information compiled internally in a web viewer to analyze and visualize PFAS sources and concentrations across New York City. The web viewer revealed that PFAS concentrations at Langan sites were consistent with the surrounding areas, saving our client the potential cost of remediation.

Langan is helping Consumers Energy build an EHS management system for its sites in Michigan, utilizing the Michigan Air Emissions Reporting System (MAERS) to implement the application and develop MAERS reports for clients. Generating these reports requires repetitive movement of data from the MAERS format into a usable format for our client’s operations. We developed a system to transform this data efficiently, saving the project team and client time and money, while reducing errors caused by manual manipulation.

Langan helped our client develop a copper remediation system to maintain compliance with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit. Langan’s Data Management and Analytics team collaborated with the GIS team to create an interactive dashboard to monitor compliance and evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment system. Data was uploaded weekly using EarthSoft’s environmental data management system (EQuIS) database, which allowed our client to store vast amounts of data in a central repository. The information was also pulled into Power BI, an interactive data visualization software, which allowed Langan and our client to further analyze and query the data.

Langan helped our client assess the potential reuse of on-site soil for site redevelopment and aided in the overall remediation of site soils. Using decades of information, our Data Management and Analytics team successfully queried, filtered, and analyzed data to allow the client to understand where soil could be reused on site according to NJDEP standards. This allowed the project team to confirm the accuracy of data from other consultants, efficiently make decisions on an analyte-specific basis, and conform to NJDEP requirements by performing like-on-like analysis, all of which led to on-site soil reuse and cost savings.

Langan is the lead environmental consultant for the large-scale redevelopment of the former U.S. Steel Corporation Fairless Works Plant. The site is just under 2,000 acres and is undergoing cleanup under the federal RCRA program and on a lot-by-lot basis under the state Land Recycling Program, also known as Act 2. Langan plays an integral role in the remediation and redevelopment team. Our services include field investigations, regulated building material surveys and abatement documents, vapor intrusion assessments and vapor mitigation system design drawings, risk assessments, ecological evaluations, material management planning and support, imported fill sampling, NPDES applications, and state and federal reports.

The ability to store, analyze, and export ongoing monitoring data for this site saved the project team time and money while also limiting possible errors in data transcription and action levels. Langan’s Data Management and Analytics team loaded and managed an EQuIS database with the monitoring data, performing semi-annual sampling at the site. Storing the data in an accessible space enables future possibilities, such as dashboards and more in-depth analysis.
