As members of the health care team, medical laboratory scientists run diagnostic tests on blood and body fluids in a variety of departments including hematology, clinical chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, urinalysis and immunology. Medical laboratory scientists provide information used by physicians to help diagnose diseases and to monitor and plan treatment.
At Augusta Health, medical laboratory scientists ensure the quality and accuracy of laboratory test results and work collaboratively with others on the health care team. “While medical laboratory scientists may not be delivering care at the bedside, they are a vital part of the patient care team and play a critical role in the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of our patients,” said Crystal Culpen, director of laboratory services.
Individuals can complete an associate degree to become a medical laboratory technician or a baccalaureate degree to become a medical laboratory scientist. Both professional pathways require passing a board certification exam to become credentialed. As technology advances in this dynamic work environment and pathogens continue to evolve, the demand for medical scientists will only continue to grow.

Take a deep breath.
For those in good health, breathing is easy. But for premature infants born with underdeveloped lungs and for patients with asthma, lung cancer or pneumonia, those inhales and exhales are constant reminders of the preciousness of air. For them, a deep breath is not something to be taken for granted.
A respiratory therapist understands what lies at the heart of each breath. Helping patients manage their disease and improve the quality of their lives by breathing easier is the end goal. At Augusta Health, respiratory therapists work directly with patients and the care team to determine the best care pathway for everything from chronic conditions like emphysema and bronchitis to emergencies including chest trauma and heart failure.
Chest exams, measuring vitals, drawing blood, analyzing oxygen levels, using ventilators and other respiratory aids and teaching patients how to use breathing apparatus are just a few of the responsibilities of a respiratory therapist. The well-paying and work-flexible positions require a two-year associate degree, though some individuals go on to earn a bachelor’s degree. Training programs include traditional academic courses along with clinical rotations. Graduates then take a certification exam to become either a certified respiratory therapist or a registered respiratory therapist, depending on their degree. Additional specialty credentials may be earned in adult critical care, neonatal/perinatal and pulmonary function testing.

“Respiratory therapy is an essential and growing healthcare profession that includes many levels of specialization individuals can choose from,” said Kiera Barker, RRT, respiratory care charge therapist. “We have an aging population and the demand for care will only increase, as older people are more likely to experience heart and lung issues — conditions that benefit from respiratory therapy.”
Augusta Health respiratory therapists work within a multitude of specialties including critical care, pulmonary diagnostics, geriatric, neonatal and pulmonary rehab, to name a few.
At Augusta Health, the respiratory therapist will find a community of professionals committed to career development and advancement, with ongoing seminars and training sessions. The independent, nonprofit community hospital prides itself on its emphasis on teamwork, top-quality medicine and work-life balance for its employees. The facility is also a proud member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
It’s more than just counting pills.
Today’s pharmacists not only specialize in the right way to use, store and dispense medicine, but they also consult patients on potential side effects and medical interactions, administer vaccines, perform simple medical checks and offer recommendations for over-the-counter drugs. For people with chronic diseases, or who are on several medications simultaneously, pharmacists can provide medication therapy management services.
At Augusta Health, pharmacists also play a critical role in working with other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care and managing patients who are acutely sick by dispensing and monitoring medications, as well as preventing medication errors.
Americans are living longer, so the demand for pharmacy services will continue to increase.
“The role of the pharmacist in the hospital setting has come a long way, and the future looks incredibly bright for anyone interested in pursuing a degree in this field,” said Joshua Dakon, PharmD, BCPS, director of pharmacy at Augusta Health. “Their expertise and efforts to educate patients and staff help in the long-term to reduce hospital readmission rates and chronic disease while providing crucial medication management. They are an essential and critical asset to our healthcare teams here at Augusta Health.”
