in a new Construction job
in North Iowa
North Iowa is growing by leaps and bounds and the construction industry is booming. For job seekers, that means there are plenty of opportunities to explore in the construction sector. Employees are needed throughout the nine-county region to help improve the area and fulfill new projects, and experience isn’t required as companies have on-the-job training to meet demand for workers.
“Demand has gone up for construction workers in recent years, and I see that continuing,” says Katrina Moore, human resources director for family-owned Henkel Construction in Mason City. “And with a large portion of our workforce due to retire in the coming years, we’ll have even more positions to fill.”
Building a career in construction
With so much new development taking place in North Iowa, job seekers can find any number of attractive opportunities to pursue in the construction industry.
“Construction isn’t just a seasonal job, it’s a year-round career,” Moore points out. “There’s a wide variety of jobs ranging from laborers to superintendents. Every position is in demand, especially the more skilled jobs.”
Why North Iowa?
Within a 50-mile radius of Mason City, residents enjoy a winning mix of big-city conveniences and friendly small-town hospitality. Think: lots of rural areas and charming little towns.
“We offer a great range of amenities in a fairly compact area,” says Hunter Callanan, workforce specialist with the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation. “For example, we have vibrant ‘micropolitan’ living in downtown Mason City, and then we’ve got Clear Lake, which draws people from miles away for activities in and on the water.”
Better work-life balance
Because everything in North Iowa is easily accessible, residents can avoid long commute times and heavy traffic — a big plus for those raising young families.
“We accommodate family life extremely well,” Callanan explains. “Our cost of living is low, and we have high-quality infrastructure, schools, housing, parks and green spaces, bike trails, entertainment and dining options already in place.”
Training and qualifications
Don’t let a lack of experience deter you from applying for a job in construction.
“The main things we look for are people who like physical, hands-on work and people who don’t mind working outdoors in all seasons,” Moore describes. “Ideal candidates are problem-solvers who are able to work well with others, those who take pride in their work and always keep safety top of mind.”
Technical skills such as familiarity with tools, building equipment and materials are an advantage, but can often be acquired through on-the-job training.
“We have employees who came to us with little or no experience and are now supervising multimillion-dollar projects,” Moore adds. “Success like that is so exciting. It shows that if you’re motivated and you embrace opportunities to learn, you can go far in this industry.”
Perks and incentives
Beyond job security and good pay, construction work may (depending on the employer) also include tuition reimbursement, bonuses paid out after a certain amount of time on the job, and recruitment bonuses for employees who refer new hires.
To share available employment opportunities, the state of Iowa maintains a job listings board searchable by city and county at iowaworks.gov. . For more information about the local industry and employers, visit thisisnorthiowa.com.
