Over the past year and a half, the COVID-19 pandemic has starkly increased the need for skilled healthcare workers, not just in North Iowa, but across the country and around the world. And that demand is expected to keep rising in the near future.
“Like everyone else, we anticipate retirements and people exiting healthcare to have a significant impact on supply and demand in coming years,” says MercyOne Chief Human Resources Officer Paula Kruthoff. “We are already seeing it as a result of the pandemic.”
Opportunities in healthcare
Within a 50-mile radius of Mason City, North Iowa, residents enjoy access to world-class healthcare facilities, doctors, nurses, specialists and caregivers.
“MercyOne is the largest healthcare system in North Iowa and the region’s biggest employer,” notes Hunter Callanan, workforce specialist with the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation. “There are also many great employment opportunities that are available at our long-term healthcare facilities.”
These opportunities span the healthcare spectrum and include jobs for nurses, doctors, radiologists, lab technicians, pharmacists, housekeepers, hospice staff, therapists, accountants and administrators.
“Nursing and nursing support, physicians, respiratory therapy techs and ultrasound techs are in very high demand,” Kruthoff adds.
Why North Iowa?
For anyone considering a move to the area, Callanan is quick to point out North Iowa’s wide-ranging appeal.
“We offer a great range of amenities in a fairly compact area,” she says. “For example, we have vibrant ‘micropolitan’ living in downtown Mason City, and then we’ve got Clear Lake, which draws people from miles for water recreation, in addition to lots of rural areas and charming small towns.”
Better work-life balance
Because everything in North Iowa is so accessible, it’s easy for residents to get the medical care and attention they need quickly. And the region’s compact footprint allows healthcare workers to avoid long commute times and heavy traffic, a big plus for those raising young families at home.
“We accommodate family life extremely well,” Callanan says. “Our cost of living is low, and we have high-quality-of-life infrastructure, schools, housing, parks and green spaces, bike trails, entertainment and dining options already in place.”
Scholarships and financial assistance
Professional training and college degrees are required for most skilled healthcare positions, and support is available to those who may want to pursue a career in North Iowa.
“The state of Iowa has a program that currently pays for almost all tuition for associate degrees in nursing,” Kruthoff says. “MercyOne also has a Mercy Nurses Rock scholarship fund to help with student loan repayment for registered nurses, and we have an educational assistance program for other healthcare programs and degrees that colleagues might wish to pursue.”
