At the age of 45, with a wife and three kids to support, J. Robert Beyster, Ph.D., takes the leap and officially launches his new company—Science Applications Incorporated (SAI).
February 3, 1969
The U.S. government becomes the company’s first customer, hiring Beyster’s firm to analyze nuclear weapon effects.
“After a year, a surprising thing happened,”
Dr. Beyster said. “We made a profit.”
1969
Leidos wins a contract studying radiation-based cancer therapy for the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which sparks the company’s health business.
1970
SAI opens an office in Albuquerque
to support the Air Force Weapons Laboratory. The company assists the lab with their work on electromagnetic phenomena and effects, which later becomes the foundation of the company’s Physical Science Group.
1972
SAI secures its first big global contract, which is for the Kuwaiti Defense Forces.
1976
Three Mile Island nuclear station in Pennsylvania becomes the site of the worst nuclear disaster in U.S. history. SAIC plays a vital role in cleaning up the nuclear accident.
March 28, 1979
SAIC’s work helps engineer the America’s Cup’s most hydrodynamic yacht, winner Stars and Stripes. This marks one of the first times that the company receives public recognition.
1987
SAIC wins its first billion-dollar contract
to create the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Composite Health Care System deployed
to more than 500 DoD medical
facilities worldwide.
1988
SAIC CEO Kenneth Dahlberg rings the
New York Stock Exchange bell, closing an era of employee ownership. In its first day of trading under the ticker symbol “SAI,” company stocks rise 21 percent.
October 13, 2006
Leidos completes its acquisition of Lockheed Martin’s former IS&GS business and begins to integrate the two companies into one unit.
August 16, 2016
Ethisphere® Institute names Leidos one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies.
2018
IS&GS becomes the lead parent company for Mission Support Alliance at the Hanford nuclear cleanup site. The contract is expected to last 10 years and cost $3 billion.
SAIC relocates its headquarters from
San Diego to McLean, Virginia, to consolidate its corporate structure and keep employees closer to Washington, D.C.
