By addressing aluminium’s end-of-life carbon impact at the design stage of buildings, Hydro CIRCAL aluminium is able to significantly reduce embodied carbon. Not only is 75% of this material already recycled, but it has been designed to increase this up to 95% which can then be further recycled in future applications.

RMF is a nationwide supplier and installer of all Raised Access Flooring and a major supplier of recycled raised flooring systems.
Refurbished flooring, which would otherwise be lost to landfill can be salvaged from demolition sites, and the components recycled to save crucial virgin material waste. Through recover and reuse RMF Installation Services have successfully diverted over one million m2 of raised floor panels potentially entering into landfill or machinery shredding.

Direct material reuse within the construction industry is the ultimate goal for circularity. Steel is a key construction material and one of the most robust for reuse. EMR’s refabrication process enables a 97.5% reduction of the embodied carbon associated with steel use by reclaiming, remanufacturing, and reusing quality steel from end-of-life buildings.

Mace’s work on the Salisbury Square Development had circular economy principles built from the start. Clauses were included to directly assess the viability of reclaiming and reusing granite and required a detailed method statement on safe removal and storage of reusable material. In total, 600m² of granite from the original building has been refinished and reused in the new development.

With Hydro CIRCAL, WICONA UK have been able to prevent 1,500,000 tons of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere. Their new product range is created for circularity, containing 75% recycled materials, of which 95% is further recyclable at the end of their lifecycle. The product combines post-consumer aluminium and recycled polyamide, to lower the product’s environmental impact by at least 65%.

Through recovery and reuse, RMF Installation Services have successfully diverted over one million m2 of raised floor panels destined for landfill or machinery shredding. The centre piece forms a large, curved wall shaped installation made of stones retrieved from the original facade of the former BT London HQ.
The exhibition is part of Mace’s global initiative to set out actionable steps the industry should be taking now to create a circular approach within the built environment. Reframing waste as a resource and looking at new ways to reuse materials that are becoming increasingly scarce.
