About Meals That Matter
Meals That Matter nourishes families in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with moments of reprieve centered around a comforting meal, activity, or experience. With the support of partners, donors, and fundraisers, March of Dimes can deliver hope, stress relief, and self-care. Meals That Matter strengthens all of our mission initiatives, including the critical NICU Family Support® program that educates NICU staff and educates and supports families through evidence-based programs and digital and in-person resources while their babies are in the NICU and during the transition home.
"A simple meal is more than a meal, it is sustaining. In fact, I've had parents cry in relief when they've been offered a meal in the NICU. When a mom or dad's physical needs are met, they are better equipped to learn, be engaged, and care for their fragile child and their siblings."

When Kamekia learned she was going into preterm labor at just 22 weeks, she felt stressed, emotional, and overwhelmed. Her son, Koa, was born via emergency Cesarean section, weighing just under a pound. During his six months in the NICU, he faced numerous challenges, including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and was given just a 5% chance of survival. Kamekia often concentrated solely on Koa's needs, which made it difficult for her to consider her own. “This is why I believe so strongly in the Feeding Motherhood: Meals that Matter program,” she shares. “It helps the parents take care of themselves so they can so that they can take the best care of their medically fragile babies. This program also connects NICU parents and caregivers with other NICU families.
